Psammocarcinoma of the ovary is a rare serous neoplasm, with only 32 cases reported in the international literature. Characteristically, this tumour shows extensive formation ofpsammoma bodies, low-grade cytological features, and invasion of the ovarian stroma, peritoneum or intraperitoneal viscera. The behaviour of this entity is unpredictable, with benign, low malignant and metastatic potential. Herein the authors report a case ofpsammocarcinoma of the ovary with homolateral serous cystoadenofibroma and thecoma, which were associated with Brenner tumour and adenofibroma of the contralateral ovary, in a 78-year-old woman. Thus, this example shows an unpredictable tumour associated with multiple benign epithelial neoplasms and a benign stromal tumour. Moreover, this example of psammocarcinoma is very interesting because it measures only 1.5 x 0.5 x 1.5 cm and, to the best of the author's knowledge, represents the smallest case ofpsammocarcinoma described so far in the literature

Primary alveolar soft part sarcoma of uterine corpus: a case report with immunohistochemical, ultrastructural study and review of literature

    Get PDF
Background Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare mesenchymal malignancy. ASPS usually occurs most commonly in the deep soft tissues of the thigh and buttock or the head and neck regions. ASPS that originate from the uterine corpus are even more rare, with only 10 previous cases reported in the English literature. Case presentation In our case, the alveolar features were completely lost and the tumour shows a solid, non-alveolar pattern and the nuclei have marked variation in nuclear size, and multinucleation. The correct pathological diagnosis has been made by immuno- histochemical and ultrastructural features, which rvealed overexpression of TFE3 and peculiar cytoplasmic crystalline inclusions. In this paper, an additional case of primary ASPS of uterine corpus is reported with immunohistochemical, ultrastructural study and review of literature in the effort to delineate its clinical and pathological features. In this unusual site, the diagnosis can be problematic because ASPS can mimic other primary or metastatic uterine neoplasms. Conclusions Thus, in this unusual presentation an essential diagnostic marker is the nuclear over-expression of TFE3 as well as ultrastructural study, which reveals the presence of peculiar cytoplasmic crystalline inclusions

The present study wants to bring to light a new type of crutch designed for a chronic patient with perennial limited mobility, who must use this support every time a move is needed. The main purpose of the project consists in recommending a correct use of the crutch through technology, limiting the damage normally caused by a bad use of crutches and giving a support both for the patient and for the doctor. All of the features of the crutches were defined through relationship matrices and a benchmarking, which helped us for defining the requirements; other important features were defined, taking a look to the technological progresses applied to new, patented crutches. The result is a sensorized crutch, functional and oriented to meet the user's needs in order to prevent an incorrect use of the support avoiding the growth of other pains

Serum antibody reactivity to human intracisternal A-type particle retrovirus proteins in systemic sclerosis patients.

Serum antibodies against human intracisternal A-typeparticle (HIAP) endogenous retrovirus have been foundto be associated with various autoimmune pathologies. To evaluate the presence of serum antibody reactivityto HIAP proteins in systemic sclerosis, a Western blotanalysis was performed on sera from 42 patients withsystemic sclerosis, in comparison with 18 sera frompatients with primary biliary cirrhosis and 52 healthysubjects. A positive Western blot was found in 55.5% ofserum samples from patients with primary biliarycirrhosis and in 66.0% of patients with systemic sclerosis.None of the 52 healthy subjects showed positive results.Although this difference may be attributable either to anautoimmune response to antigenically related cellularproteins or to a specific antibody response to HIAPproteins expressed as an incidental consequence ofattendant pathological processes, the high prevalence ofantibodies against HIAP proteins demonstrated inpatients with systemic sclerosis may be considered ahallmark of this disease.(Accepted November 10, 2003.)Acta Derm Venereol 2004; 84: 177–180.Dr Michelangelo La Placa, Department of Clinicaland Experimental Medicine, Section of Dermatology,Via Massarenti, 1, 40138 Bologna, Italy. E-mail:[email protected] sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue diseasecharacterized by excessive deposition of collagen inthe skin and various internal organs, and by vascularabnormalities (1). SSc is considered to be an auto-immune disease. Although both cellular microchimer-ism (2) and molecular mimicry of some commoninfectious agents, such as cytomegalovirus and parvo-virus B19 (3), have been implicated in its pathogenesis, the aetiology of SSc remains unknown.Several publications have described the presence ofretroviral sequences associated with virions, producedby cells of patients with autoimmune diseases. In recentreviews (4, 5), these viruses, identified as human endo-genous retroviruses (HERVs), have been associatedwith Sjo¨grens's syndrome, type 1 or insulin-dependentdiabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthri-tis, congenital heart block, systemic lupus erythemato-sus and SSc. Serum antibodies specific for humanintracisternal A-type particles (HIAP), a HERV recog-nized by monoclonal antibody against HIV-1 p24capsid protein (6), have been found in primary biliarycirrhosis (PBC) (7), familial erosive arthritis (8) andsome patients with SSc, systemic lupus erythematosus,Still's disease and idiopathic T-lymphocytopenia (9,10).To further investigate serum antibody reactivity toHIAP proteins in SSc, we performed a Western blotanalysis of a substantial number of sera from SScpatients, in comparison with sera from PBC patientsand healthy subjects.MATERIALS AND METHOD

Sesi-SP, a nonprofit entity, in partnership with British Cuncil and Premiership Rugby, is developing a sporting project named Try Rugby-SP. These international entities, driven by a favorable scenario supporting the continuous growth of rugby in Brazil, are looking out a sport organization with a similar management structure adopted by them. In this sense, SESI-SP was selected due to the Principles of Corporate Governance. We applied qualitative and exploratory research in a case study. In this work, we analysed how corporate governance practices, like Transparency, Equity, Accountability and Corporate Responsibility, were employed in the sport project TRY Rugby-SP. We also verified how Corporate Governance influenced the major stakeholders - British Council and Premiership Rugby, and the reasons that led them to show faith in the institution SESI-SP and provide a financial support for this project. The data were collected using triangulation as observation and direct participation of one researcher, document analysis, and interviews. The subjects of this study were the stakeholders that provided financial support for this project. SESI-SP management system, allied with good corporate governance practices, was essential to attract stakeholders’ interest. In this way, we hope to contribute to sports organizations understanding the use of best practices of corporate governance, enhancing the institutional image and the potential stakeholders for attracting increasing investments for implementation of projects.
