    Sectorial Economic Growth and Employment in Mexico, 1996-2001

    This paper shows the results from a study of the impact of sectorial economic growth on unemployment in Mexico for 1996-2001, by applying a disaggregate approach on data from the National Employment Survey (Encuesta Nacional de Empleo). The paper includes a discussion of the theoretical aspects of the sectorial contributions to growth (emphasizing the case of agriculture), as well as of the relationship between production and employment and the working of labor markets, but also describes the recent evolution of unemployment in Mexico. The core of the paper rests upon the analysis of panel data to estimate the open unemployment rate; it also includes the study of regional urban/rural growth through the analysis of unemployment in different sectors for ten different mexican regions. The results from the estimations at the regional level show that unemployment in Mexico has a statistically significant negative effect on sectorial economic growth. Also, evidence was found suggesting that promoting sectorial-regional (urban/rural) growth is an effective way to reduce unemployment. The paper, which is divided into five sections and draws upon some previous work on Okun’s law, also shows the impact that growth among economic activities within sectors has upon unemployment for the period.Sectorial Growth, Unemployment, Okun’s Law, Panel Data, National Employment Survey

    Luminescent and Scintillating Properties of Lanthanum Fluoride Nanocrystals in Response to Gamma/Neutron Irradiation: Codoping with Ce Activator, Yb Wavelength Shifter, and Gd Neutron Captor

    A novel concept for detection and spectroscopy of gamma rays, and detection of thermal neutrons based on codoped lanthanum fluoride nanocrystals containing gadolinium is presented.The trends of colloidal synthesis of the mentioned material, LaF3 co-doped with Ce as the activator, Yb as the wavelength-shifter and Gd as the neutron captor, is reported. Nanocrystals of the mentioned material were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), optical absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Gamma detection and its potential spectroscopy feature have been confirmed.     El búfalo comenzó a ser introducido al país a comienzo el siglo XX, mediante la importación razas Mediterránea, Murrah y Jafarabadi. En la actualidad la población bubalina alcanzó las de 87.711 cabezas y se encuentran distribuidas en 20 de las 23 provincias que componen el territorio nacional. El 80 % de la población de búfalos se encuentran en el nordeste argentino. Siendo las provincias de Formosa y Corrientes las que cuentan con la mayores poblaciones bubalinas. Existen en el país 8 millones de hectáreas aptas para soportar una carga de 4 millones de búfalos.The buffalo began to be introduced to the country in the early twentieth century, by importing Mediterranean, Murrah and Jafarabadi breeds. Today buffalo population reached 87.711 heads, which are distributed in 20 out of the 23 provinces that conforms the country. The 80% of the population of buffaloes is found in northeastern region, being the provinces of Formosa and Corrientes those with the largest buffalo population.     A Fungal Effector With Host Nuclear Localization and DNA-Binding Properties Is Required for Maize Anthracnose Development

    Plant pathogens have the capacity to manipulate the host immune system through the secretion of effectors. We identified 27 putative effector proteins encoded in the genome of the maize anthracnose pathogen Colletotrichum graminicola that are likely to target the host’s nucleus, as they simultaneously contain sequence signatures for secretion and nuclear localization. We functionally characterized one protein, identified as CgEP1. This protein is synthesized during the early stages of disease development and is necessary for anthracnose development in maize leaves, stems, and roots. Genetic, molecular, and biochemical studies confirmed that this effector targets the host’s nucleus and defines a novel class of double-stranded DNA-binding protein. We show that CgEP1 arose from a gene duplication in an ancestor of a lineage of monocot-infecting Colletotrichum spp. and has undergone an intense evolution process, with evidence for episodes of positive selection. We detected CgEP1 homologs in several species of a grass-infecting lineage of Colletotrichum spp., suggesting that its function may be conserved across a large number of anthracnose pathogens. Our results demonstrate that effectors targeted to the host nucleus may be key elements for disease development and aid in the understanding of the genetic basis of anthracnose development in maize plants.Fil: Vargas, Walter Alberto.     A nivel mundial los cítricos son el principal frutal cultivado, en México la producción de naranja es de gran importancia económica, los principales municipios productores del estado de Veracruz se encuentran Álamo, Papantla, Martínez de la Torre, Tihuatlán, Chicontepec y Temapache. Estas zonas, mantienen un rendimiento promedio bajo en comparación con otros países productores y un factor que puede mejorar los rendimientos es la óptima fertilización la cual tiene que ser respaldada con análisis de suelos para poder definir una dosis. Se realizaron 646 muestreos de suelo a una profundidad de 30 cm, en el municipio de Temapache, Veracruz, mediante un muestreo aleatorio simple, el tamaño de la muestra se adaptó a las condiciones de cada comunidad. Los análisis fueron enviados a dos laboratorios. Se evaluaron el pH, materia orgánica, nitrógeno, fósforo, potasio. Los resultados se analizaron con estadística no paramétrica mediante un análisis de frecuencias para lo que se plantearon diez rangos, se utilizó R stadistic package versión 64 3.2.0. El pH en más del 70% de los suelos fue alcalino, la concentración de materia orgánica solo en el 34.44% se encontró en condiciones adecuadas, los macroelementos se encuentran en condiciones óptimas a excepción del nitrógeno el cual se presentó en niveles bajos

    Estudio de la investigación turística a través de las coautorías de artículos: cálculo de indicadores de colaboración y análisis de redes sociales

    Se analiza la colaboración científica de las universidades catalanas en el campo del turismo entre 2000 y 2010. A partir de las coautorías de artículos, se calculan indicadores de colaboración simples y se examina la red colaboración. Se estudia la colaboración entre investigadores, instituciones y territorios. Los resultados muestran un aumento de la colaboración, diferencias entre las revistas y ausencia de relación entre colaboración y multidisciplinariedad. La red de colaboración presenta una baja densidad y varias subredes.Catalan universities scientific collaboration in tourism is analyzed, from 2000 to 2010.     Fructose metabolism in Chromohalobacter salexigens: interplay between the Embden–Meyerhof–Parnas and Entner–Doudoroff pathways

    Background The halophilic bacterium Chromohalobacter salexigens metabolizes glucose exclusively through the Entner–Doudoroff (ED) pathway, an adaptation which results in inefficient growth, with significant carbon overflow, especially at low salinity. Preliminary analysis of C. salexigens genome suggests that fructose metabolism could proceed through the Entner–Doudoroff and Embden–Meyerhof–Parnas (EMP) pathways. In order to thrive at high salinity, this bacterium relies on the biosynthesis and accumulation of ectoines as major compatible solutes. This metabolic pathway imposes a high metabolic burden due to the consumption of a relevant proportion of cellular resources, including both energy molecules (NADPH and ATP) and carbon building blocks. Therefore, the existence of more than one glycolytic pathway with different stoichiometries may be an advantage for C. salexigens. The aim of this work is to experimentally characterize the metabolism of fructose in C. salexigens. Results Fructose metabolism was analyzed using in silico genome analysis, RT-PCR, isotopic labeling, and genetic approaches. During growth on fructose as the sole carbon source, carbon overflow was not observed in a wide range of salt concentrations, and higher biomass yields were reached. We unveiled the initial steps of the two pathways for fructose incorporation and their links to central metabolism. While glucose is metabolized exclusively through the Entner–Doudoroff (ED) pathway, fructose is also partially metabolized by the Embden–Meyerhof–Parnas (EMP) route. Tracking isotopic label from [1-13C] fructose to ectoines revealed that 81% and 19% of the fructose were metabolized through ED and EMP-like routes, respectively. Activities of enzymes from both routes were demonstrated in vitro by 31P-NMR. Genes encoding predicted fructokinase and 1-phosphofructokinase were cloned and the activities of their protein products were confirmed. Importantly, the protein encoded by csal1534 gene functions as fructose bisphosphatase, although it had been annotated previously as pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase. The gluconeogenic rather than glycolytic role of this enzyme in vivo is in agreement with the lack of 6-phosphofructokinase activity previously described.     Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory for triangulated categories

    We introduce and develop an analogous of the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory (see \cite{AB}) in the context of triangulated categories, by using a version of relative homology in this setting. We also prove several results concerning relative homological algebra in a triangulated category \T, which are based on the behavior of certain subcategories under finiteness of resolutions and vanishing of Hom-spaces. For example: we establish the existence of preenvelopes (and precovers) in certain triangulated subcategories of \T. The results resemble various constructions and results of Auslander and Buchweitz, and are concentrated in exploring the structure of a triangulated category \T equipped with a pair (\X,\omega), where \X is closed under extensions and ω\omega is a weak-cogenerator in \X, usually under additional conditions. This reduces, among other things, to the existence of distinguished triangles enjoying special properties, and the behavior of (suitably defined) (co)resolutions, projective or injective dimension of objects of \T and the formation of orthogonal subcategories.     Direct PCR-free electrochemical biosensing of plant-food derived nucleic acids in genomic DNA extracts. Application to the determination of the key allergen Sola l 7 in tomato seeds

    A novel and disposable electrochemical biosensor for PCR-free and selective detection of Sola l 7, a non-specific lipid transfer protein (nsLTP) found in tomato seeds associated to severe symptoms of tomato-allergic patients, is reported in this work. The methodology involves the formation of DNA/RNA heterohybrids by sandwich hybridization of a specific fragment of the Sola l 7 allergen coding sequence with appropriate RNA probes designed and described for the first time in this work. Labeling was carried out with commercial antibodies specific to the heteroduplexes and secondary antibodies conjugated with HRP onto the surface of magnetic beads. Amperometric transduction was performed upon magnetic capture of the resulting magnetic bioconjugates on screen-printed electrodes using the system H2O2/HQ. A comparison of the sandwich hybridization format with a direct approach as well as between different labeling strategies was performed. The LOD value achieved was 0.2 pM (5 amol in 25 μL).
