Powering Cuba: A Study of Cuba\u27s Energy Autonomy and its Effect on Culture

    Get PDF
Cuba’s national pride comes from their autonomy in many industries, although they have been dependent on other countries to supply them with energy since the revolution. In the 1990’s, after the demise of the Soviet Union, Cuba entered its “Special Period” in which it faced energy shortages that caused oil consumption to drop by 20 percent from 1989 to 1992. In later years, the “Cuban Energy Revolution” focused on replacing inefficient infrastructure, encouraging energy efficiency, expanding electricity availability, and pursuing renewable energy generation. Luckily, Cuba has a high capacity for various renewable energy sources, including wind, biomass, solar, and hydropower, and as of 2014, Cuban energy experts estimate that renewable sources make up about 7-8% of total electricity generation. Despite its efforts, Cuba is in the midst of another energy crisis, and neighborhoods have been facing blackouts similar to those of the 1990’s. Heavy restrictions on energy consumption and the possibility of blackouts undoubtedly have an effect on the way citizens live and use energy. This study combines the interviews and observations of Cubans as they use energy in their lives, including changes in their culture and daily routine, as well as the study of renewable energy infrastructure across the country

The present study aimed to compare the aesthetic perception of the anteroposterior position of the chin as Element V of orofacial harmony between patients, Odontology students, general dentists and orthodontists. The prospective, cross-sectional, comparative and oexperimental study included a total of 144 people including 36 patient surgeons, 36 stomatology students, 36 general dentists and 36 orthodontists. For the evaluation of aesthetic perception, they were shown 10 digitally modified photographs to be evaluated by the analogous visual scale with a score of 0-10. Comparisons were assessed using the Kruskal Wallis and U de Mann Whitney tests to overall compare all groups and Friedman with Wilcoxon Sign-Rango to compare the perception between the photos. The results showed statistically significant differences (p <0.05) among patients, students, general dentists and orthodontists. Among general dentists and odontology students, no statistically significant differences were found in the aesthetic perception of chin position (p> 0.05). In the group of patients, the photos that most liked were photos 8 and 9 and the ones that liked least were photos 6 and 7 (p <0.05). Among orthodontists, the photos that most liked were photos 2 and 8 and the ones that liked least were photos 6 and 7 (p <0.05). It is concluded that there are differences in the aesthetic perception of the position of the chin between patients, students, general dentists and orthodontists. Patients and orthodontists liked similar photos.Tesi

Iceland\u27s unique geographic location provides the people with one main source of energy to keep them powered: water. Iceland can harness the energy from both geothermal and glacial water sources providing a sustainable lifestyle influenced further by the country’s culture. The water sources also provide a stable industry and economy for the population. Although easily accessible and plentiful, the water-based energy sources are carefully planned and constructed to prevent negative environmental impacts. Through a qualitative approach, research was conducted through field observations in country, interviews with natives, and through secondary accounts. These key water sources in Iceland essentially power the whole island. Future studies can be conducted as to the continued impact of these water sources, outside of Iceland. Future topics can include Iceland’s energy grid contributing to the number of outside investors and joint ventures occurring in country, further environmental effects of harvesting hydropower, and a projected study on how the nation would survive without using hydropower

Nowadays, teaching virtually has become a challenge due to the COVID 19 emergency. However, with the help of technological tools, English as aforeign language (EFL) classes can be directed towards a student-centered perspective for students to be active in the class and participate orally. Furthermore, the implementation of technological tools became highly essential in the classes. This paper aims to explain the importance of a student-centered class and Communicative Language Teaching. Also, the importance of both working together in the class with the help offered by some online resources. Also, some online tools are explained that were applied in an EFL class. Moreover, this paper concludes that teachers should continuously innovate their classes by investigating and implementing new online tools that allow them to put into practice Communicative Language Teaching in a student-centered class.
