Some geotechnical aspects of bioreactor landfills

    Get PDF
In waste management, recent global practices are shifting the attention toward utilization of landfill gas generation and the deployment of bioreactors. This puts emphasis on the internal processes of bioreactor landfill and the analysis of slope stability of such landfills. We examined bioreactor landfills stability with respect to degradation. Our model divided the waste body into five layers according to the degree of decomposition. Three different geometries were simulated. We used PLAXIS and GEOSLOPE program in our simulations then we compared their results

SOIL MODELS: SAFETY FACTORS AND SETTLEMENTS

Today´s technology makes it possible to easily compute slope stability using computer software but the accuracy of the results is questionable. In this paper we compare how the application of three different models influences the results in case of different types of soil using the results of laboratory tests from several parts of Hungary. From the analysis of a cutting, soft-soil model deformations are much smaller than that of the other two models. The results of the calculation of an embankment are similar. The safety parameters are approximately the same for each model

Analysis of input delay systems using integral quadratic constraint

    Get PDF
The L2-gain computation of a linear time-invariant system with state and input delay is discussed. The input and the state delay are handled separately by using dissipation inequality involving a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and integral quadratic constraints. A conic combination of IQCs is proposed for characterizing the input delay, where the coefficients are linear time-invariant systems. The numerical example (a vehicle platoon) confirm that using this dissipativity approach a more effective method for L2-gain computation is obtained

Determination of the Enantiomers of Methionine and Cyst(e)ine in the Form of Methionine-sulphon and Cysteic Acid After Performic Acid Oxidation by Reversed Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography

    Get PDF
In the quantitative analysis of cystine, cysteine and methionine content of foods and feeds, the sulphur containing amino acids are often oxidised by performic acid before hydrolysis of the protein to make the determination more punctual. The applicability of the performic acid oxidation to the quantification of the enantiomers of sulphur-containing amino acids has been examined. An reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RPHPLC) method was developed for determination of the amount of cysteic acid and methionine-sulphon enantiomers and the rate of the conversion during oxidation from cystine and cysteine into cysteic acid and from methionine to methionine-sulphon was determined. Racemization of the L-cysteine and Lmethionine was negligible during performic acid oxidation, and therefore the process can be applied before hydrolysis of the protein during quantification of enantiomers of sulphur containing amino acids. The separation between the acidic amino acids (Asp, Glu) and the oxidised from of the sulphur-containing amino acids at the applied gradient system is very good, and the resolution of the peaks were better than 1.4 in every case

| We have developed a novel intravital method for the examination of the microcirculation of the periosteum and synovial membrane in rats. Periosteal microcirculatory disorders elicited by limb ischemia were traced by the examinations of the changes in the efficacy of microcirculatory perfusion, leukocyte-endothelial interactions and mast cell degranulation. The systemic inflammatory activation (CD11b adhesion molecule expression and TNF-alfa release, myeloperoxidase activity) was also characterized. These reactions could be effectively ameliorated by exogenous phosphatidylcholine, estrogen and colloid (hydroxyethyl starch) therapies and ischemic preconditioning (which appears to be mediated by the activation of TRPV-1 positive nerves). The intravital microscopic assessment of synovial inflammatory changes was assessed in carrageenan-induced arthritis also and the anti-inflammatory potential of oral phosphatidylcholine was established in this model, too. Intravital microscopy was also applied to assess the changes in periosteal vascular density in tibias with polyethylene or titanium implants were infixed. We described an increased periosteal vessel formation which may represent a compensatory mechanism against impaired endosteal regeneration caused by the implants
