    Protection of Domestic Violence Victims Under the New York City Human Rights Law\u27s Provisions Prohibiting Discrimination on the Basis of Disability

    This Article analyzes the need to create a new protected class of domestic violence victims to shield them from discrimination in employment. The Article examines arguments for and against proposed legislation to revise the human rights law governing disability, section 8-107 of the New York City Administration Code. The Article concludes that this legislation is unnecessary because the law already provides sufficient protection to domestic violence victims without requiring that victims disclose their domestic violence status to their employers

    Nitrogen fixation in the upwelling region off NW Iberia

    Comunicación oralPicoplankton are the most abundant organisms in the ocean, often dominate planktonic biomass and primary production, and they could represent a substantial contribution to the global export of carbon. Nowadays, we have a limited understanding about the factors that control the picoplankton community structure. A recent analysis indicates that light and temperature are the main factors explaining Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus distributions, whereas nutrient concentrations play a minor role (Flombaum et al., PNAS 2013). Methodological difficulties to quantify mixing in the marine enviroments have motivated the use of indirect approaches to determine the input of nutrients into the euphotic zone, however, nutrient concentrations are not necessarily a proxy of nutrient supply. We present a large data set, including open-ocean and coastal regions, of simultaneous measurements of picoplankton abundance, temperature and irradiance, together with estimates of nutrient supply. The transport of nutrients across the nutricline was computed combining nutrient concentrations and small-scale turbulence observations collected with a microstructure profiler. Our preliminary results indicate that nutrient supply also plays a role in the distribution of functional groups of picoplankton in the ocean

    Short-term variability in the activity and composition of the diazotroph community in a coastal upwelling system

    Today we know that diazotrophs are common and active in nitrogen (N) replete regions, however the factors controlling their distribution remain elusive. Previous studies in upwelling regions revealed that the composition of diazotrophs responded to changes in hydrodynamic forcing over seasonal scales. Here we used high-frequency observations collected during a 3-week cruise in the upwelling region off NW Iberia to describe changes in the activity and composition of diazotrophs over shorter temporal scales. The cruise started after a strong upwelling event followed by a few days of relaxation-downwelling, and soon after another upwelling pulse. Higher N2 fixation rates (2.2 ± 0.7 µmol m-3 d-1) were measured during relaxation-downwelling, when surface nitrate concentration was low. During the fertilization associated with the upwelling, N2 fixation dramatically decreased to 0.10 ± 0.09 µmol m-3 d-1. The comparison with nitrate consumption and diffusion confirmed the minor role of N2 fixation (<1%) as a source of new N for primary production. The unicellular cyanobacterium UCYN-A2 was the dominant diazotroph during the cruise. UCYN-A2 abundance was four times higher during relaxation-downwelling (4x104 copies L-1) compared to upwelling conditions (0.2x104 copies L-1), when the unusual Epsilonproteobacteria increased their relative abundance. These results indicate that diazotrophs can respond rapidly to changes in the environment, and point out to the availability of N as a key factor controlling the activity, composition and distribution of diazotrophs in eutrophic regions

    Hexagonal Hybrid Bismuthene by Molecular Interface Engineering

    High-quality devices based on layered heterostructures are typically built from materials obtained by complex solid-state physical approaches or laborious mechanical exfoliation and transfer. Meanwhile, wet-chemically synthesized materials commonly suffer from surface residuals and intrinsic defects. Here, we synthesize using an unprecedented colloidal photocatalyzed, one-pot redox reaction a few-layers bismuth hybrid of “electronic grade” structural quality. Intriguingly, the material presents a sulfur-alkyl-functionalized reconstructed surface that prevents it from oxidation and leads to a tuned electronic structure that results from the altered arrangement of the surface. The metallic behavior of the hybrid is supported by ab initio predictions and room temperature transport measurements of individual nanoflakes. Our findings indicate how surface reconstructions in two-dimensional (2D) systems can promote unexpected properties that can pave the way to new functionalities and devices. Moreover, this scalable synthetic process opens new avenues for applications in plasmonics or electronic (and spintronic) device fabrication.     La afirmación, en sí misma &quot;enigmática&quot; de Arnaldo Canclini (2014), que hemos colocado como epígrafe, es la que nos anima a acercarnos a este tema tan sensible para todos los argentinos (y probablemente, para todos los hispano-hablantes) -“Quizás la única deuda internacional que los argentinos no han perdonado" (Canclini, 2014: 9)- no desde el ángulo de lo histórico, sino desde la literatura. Esto es así porque, como afirma Julieta Vitullo (2012), la literatura se cuela precisamente por esos intersticios que deja la versión “oficial" o establecida de los hechos, para construir sus propios avatares, para dar cuenta de sus recónditas motivaciones, para sugerir o postular “otras" verdades.     Bloom dynamics of an exceptional red tide of the toxigenic dinoflagellate

    The toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum generally proliferates in semi-enclosed sites such as estuaries, harbours and lagoons, where stratification, restricted circulation and accumulation of resting cysts set suitable conditions for its development. In the Galician Rías (NW Iberian Peninsula), its blooms follow also this pattern. They are recurrent in small, shallow estuarine bays inside the Rías, but rarely detected, and if so in minor amount, out of these areas. However, a massive proliferation of A. minutum from June to July 2018 in the Rías Baixas (Vigo and Pontevedra) changed this picture. The bloom initiated in semi-enclosed waters, as previously described for this species, but thereafter spread to the whole embayments where persisted more than one month. It generated a noticeable red tide with disperse patches that became heavily concentrated inside the port of Vigo. During that period shellfish harvesting closures and paralytic shellfish toxins in certain marine invertebrates and fish were reported for the first time in Spain. Meteorological conditions (higher than usual rains/runoff, sustained temperature increment and oscillating wind pattern promoting a series of upwelling-relaxation cycles) fostered optimal circumstances for the outbreak of A. minutum: strong vertical stratification and the alternation of retention and dispersion processes. Simulations from a particle tracking model portrayed the observed bloom development phases: onset, transport within the surface layer towards the interior parts of the Ría of Vigo, and dispersion all over the embayment. High concentrations of resting cysts were detected several months after the bloom, which may have favoured flourish of A. minutum in the following years, markedly in 2020
