In-Situ Particle Acceleration in Extragalactic Radio Hot Spots: Observations Meet Expectations
We discuss, in terms of particle acceleration, the results from optical VLT
observations of hot spots associated with radio galaxies. On the basis of
observational and theoretical grounds, it is shown that:
1. relatively low radio-radio power hot spots are the optimum candidates for
being detected at optical waves. This is supported by an unprecedented optical
detection rate of 70% out of a sample of low radio power hot spots.
2. the shape of the synchrotron spectrum of hot spots is mainly determined by
the strength of the magnetic field in the region. In particular, the break
frequency, related to the age of the oldest electrons in the hot spots, is
found to increase with decreasing synchrotron power and magnetic field
strength.
Both observational results are in agreement with an in-situ particle

miRNAs as Influencers of Cell-Cell Communication in Tumor Microenvironment
microRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level, inducing the degradation of the target mRNA or translational repression. MiRNAs are involved in the control of a multiplicity of biological processes, and their absence or altered expression has been associated with a variety of human diseases, including cancer. Recently, extracellular miRNAs (ECmiRNAs) have been described as mediators of intercellular communication in multiple contexts, including tumor microenvironment. Cancer cells cooperate with stromal cells and elements of the extracellular matrix (ECM) to establish a comfortable niche to grow, to evade the immune system, and to expand. Within the tumor microenvironment, cells release ECmiRNAs and other factors in order to influence and hijack the physiological processes of surrounding cells, fostering tumor progression. Here, we discuss the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of multicomplex diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, obesity, and cancer, focusing on the contribution of both intracellular miRNAs, and of released ECmiRNAs in the establishment and development of cancer niche. We also review growing evidence suggesting the use of miRNAs as novel targets or potential tools for therapeutic applications
Chandra detection of the radio and optical double hot spot of 3C 351
In this letter we report a Chandra X-ray detection of the double northern hot
spot of the radio quasar 3C 351. The hot spot has also been observed in the
optical with the Hubble Space Telescope (R-band) and with the 3.5m. Telescopio
Nazionale Galileo (B-band). The radio-to-optical and X-ray spectra are
interpreted as the results of the synchrotron and synchrotron-self-Compton
(SSC) mechanisms, respectively, with hot-spot magnetic field strengths ~3 times
smaller than the equipartition values. In the framework of shock acceleration
theory, we show that the requirement for such a relatively small field strength
is in agreement with the fitted synchrotron spectral models and with the sizes
of the hot spots. Finally, we show that the combination of a lower magnetic
field strength with the high frequencies of the synchrotron cut-off in the
fitted synchrotron spectra provides strong evidence for electron acceleration

Development of the opto-mechanical design for ICE-T
ICE-T (International Concordia Explorer Telescope) is a double 60 cm f/1.1
photometric robotic telescope, on a parallactic mount, which will operate at
Dome C, in the long Antarctic night, aiming to investigate exoplanets and
activity of the hosting stars. Antarctic Plateau site is well known to be one
of the best in the world for observations because of sky transparency in all
wavelengths and low scintillation noise. Due to the extremely harsh
environmental conditions (the lowest average temperature is -80C) the
criteria adopted for an optimal design are really challenging. Here we present
the strategies we have adopted so far to fulfill the mechanical and optical

Left atrial trajectory impairment in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy disclosed by geometric morphometrics and parallel transport
The analysis of full Left Atrium (LA) deformation and whole LA deformational trajectory in time has been poorly investigated and, to the best of our knowledge, seldom discussed in patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Therefore, we considered 22 patients with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and 46 healthy subjects, investigated them by three-dimensional Speckle Tracking Echocardiography, and studied the derived landmark clouds via Geometric Morphometrics with Parallel Transport. Trajectory shape and trajectory size were different in Controls versus HCM and their classification powers had high AUC (Area Under the Receiving Operator Characteristic Curve) and accuracy. The two trajectories were much different at the transition between LA conduit and booster pump functions. Full shape and deformation analyses with trajectory analysis enabled a straightforward perception of pathophysiological consequences of HCM condition on LA functioning. It might be worthwhile to apply these techniques to look for novel pathophysiological approaches that may better define atrio-ventricular interaction
Bacterial infection elicits heat shock protein 72 release from pleural mesothelial cells
Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been implicated in infection-related processes and has been found in body fluids during
infection. This study aimed to determine whether pleural mesothelial cells release HSP70 in response to bacterial infection in
vitro and in mouse models of serosal infection. In addition, the in vitro cytokine effects of the HSP70 isoform, Hsp72, on
mesothelial cells were examined. Further, Hsp72 was measured in human pleural effusions and levels compared between
non-infectious and infectious patients to determine the diagnostic accuracy of pleural fluid Hsp72 compared to traditional
pleural fluid parameters. We showed that mesothelial release of Hsp72 was significantly raised when cells were treated with
live and heat-killed Streptococcus pneumoniae. In mice, intraperitoneal injection of S. pneumoniae stimulated a 2-fold
increase in Hsp72 levels in peritoneal lavage (p,0.01). Extracellular Hsp72 did not induce or inhibit mediator release from
cultured mesothelial cells. Hsp72 levels were significantly higher in effusions of infectious origin compared to non-infectious
effusions (p,0.05). The data establish that pleural mesothelial cells can release Hsp72 in response to bacterial infection and
levels are raised in infectious pleural effusions. The biological role of HSP70 in pleural infection warrants exploration
Diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and cardiovascular risk: the importance of a long-term perspective and a multidisciplinary approach to optimal intravitreal therapy
Diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) resulting from vascular damage from persistently elevated blood glucose levels are among the serious secondary pathologies associated with long-standing diabetes mellitus. The established link between DR and CVD suggests the need for appropriate and early management of patients with diabetes to minimize CV risk. This is of particular importance in patients with recent, or a history of, major CV events. Early management of DR is a complex task that requires comprehensive evaluation and a multidisciplinary approach to manage complications, risk factors, and interactions between different aspects of the disease. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents have become an important therapeutic modality in ophthalmology. However, their use is contraindicated in patients with DR and/or DME with a CV event in the previous 3 months. In patients with DME, corticosteroids target the multifaceted inflammatory pathways involved in the pathogenesis of DR, with a broader spectrum of action than anti-VEGF agents. In this context, recent guidelines suggest the use of corticosteroids, and in particular dexamethasone intravitreal implant, as a well-tolerated and efficacious first-line treatment in patients with high CV risk, such as a history of or recent major CV events. This review focuses on the subset of diabetic patients with a prior CV event, DR, and DME and discusses the need for a holistic approach in evaluating the optimal therapeutic choice for the care of the individual patient, supported by real-world clinical experience on long-term dexamethasone intravitreal implant therapy
Diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, and cardiovascular risk: the importance of a long-term perspective and a multidisciplinary approach to optimal intravitreal therapy
Health-related quality of life in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. An Italian multicentre observational study
Purpose: As a progressive condition, glaucoma may impair health-related quality of life (HRQoL), due to vision loss and
other factors. This study evaluated HRQoL in a cohort of patients treated for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and
assessed its association with clinical features.
Methods: This was an Italian, multicentre, cross-sectional, observational study with the subgroup of newly diagnosed
patients with POAG prospectively followed up for one year. Patients with previous or new diagnosis (or strong clinical
suspicion) of POAG aged >18 years were considered eligible. Information was collected on demographic characteristics,
medical history, clinical presentation and POAG treatments. HRQoL was measured using the 25-item National Eye
Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) and Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS). Subscale and total scores
were obtained and a Pearson correlation coefficient between instruments’ scores calculated.
Results: A total of 3227 patients were enrolled from 2012 to 2013 and 3169 were analysed. Mean age was 66.9 years. A
total of 93.8% had a previous diagnosis (median duration: 8.0 years). Median values for mean deviation and pattern
standard deviation were 3.9 and 3.6 dB, respectively. Mean scores on most subscales of the NEI-VFQ-25 exceeded 75.0
and mean GSS subscale scores ranged between 70.8 and 79.7 (with a total mean score of 74.8). HRQoL scores on both
scales were significantly inversely associated with POAG severity.
Conclusion: In this large sample of Italians treated for POAG, disease severity was limited and HRQoL scores were high.
QoL decreased with advancing disease severity. These findings confirm the role of vision loss in impairing QoL in POAG,
underlying the importance of timely detection and appropriate treatment
