Cue-conflict experiments between magnetic and visual cues in dunlin Calidris alpina and curlew sandpiper Calidris ferruginea
Despite our extensive knowledge on various aspects of their lives, there has been limited investigation into the hierarchical relationships among different compass systems in shorebirds. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between magnetic and celestial compasses in two species of shorebirds, the curlew sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea; prebreeding migration) and the dunlin (Calidris alpina; postbreeding migration) using cue-conflict experiments. Birds were captured in a Mediterranean stopover site, after which their magnetic orientation was determined under simulated overcast conditions at sunset using modified Emlen funnels fitted with infrared video cameras. Birds that demonstrated a well-defined directional preference were then exposed over two sunsets to conflicting directional information between the local geomagnetic field and the ±90° shifted band of maximum polarisation. These individuals were tested again for magnetic orientation at sunset in the same conditions as previous test, to determine whether their directional choices had changed after the cue-conflict. Our results showed that individuals from both species did not recalibrate their magnetic compass from visual cues after the cue-conflict, even though at least dunlins did not appear to completely disregard the information derived from celestial cues. This study is one of the few experimental studies on the migratory orientation of Charadriiformes and on the hierarchical relationships between the different compasses used by these birds during their extensive migratory movements
New cue-conflict experiments suggest a leading role of visual cues in the migratory orientation of Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca
Migratory birds use both geomagnetic and celestial cues to select and maintain their seasonally appropriate migratory direction. The integration of the different compass cues is still poorly understood. Previous cue-conflict experiments suggested that Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca did not recalibrate their magnetic compass against the polarization pattern at twilight, but the available evidence is problematic given the high variability of birds’ directional preferences. We performed a new set of cue-conflict experiments where (1) we modified the protocol in order to try to reduce scatter of data and (2) we integrated the results of two experimental approaches, i.e. orientation cages and releases of radio-tagged birds. Pied Flycatchers were tested in Emlen funnels without access to celestial cues before and after being exposed to conflicting visual and geomagnetic information. After the second test, birds were equipped with radio-transmitters and followed until the vanishing of the radio signal. Contrary to previous experiments, our data showed a general dominance of celestial cues: polarized light sun-related pattern in captive birds tested without access to stars and stellar
dominance in free-flying birds released under a starry sky at night-time. These results underline the importance of experimental protocols when testing ways in which birds integrate their compass systems

Multi-Institutional Outcomes of Minimally Invasive Harvest of Rectal Mucosa Graft for Anterior Urethral Reconstruction.
PurposeWe report multi-institutional outcomes in patients who underwent urethroplasty with a rectal mucosa graft.Materials and methodsWe used the TURNS (Trauma and Urologic Reconstructive Network of Surgeons) database to identify patients who underwent urethral reconstruction with transanal harvest of a rectal mucosa graft. We reviewed preoperative demographics, stricture etiology, previous management and patient outcomes.ResultsWe identified 13 patients from April 2013 to June 2017. Median age at surgery was 54 years. The stricture etiology was lichen sclerosus in 6 of 13 patients (46%), idiopathic in 2 (15%), hypospadias in 1 (7%), prior gender confirming surgery in 3 (23%) and rectourethral fistula after radiation for prostate cancer in 1 (7%). Prior procedures included failed urethroplasty with a buccal mucosa graft in 9 of 13 patients (69%), direct vision internal urethrotomy in 2 (15%) and none in 2 (15%). Median stricture length was 13 cm. Stricture location in the 9 cisgender patients was panurethral in 5 (56%), bulbopendulous in 2 (22%) and bulbar in 2 (22%). It was located at the junction of the fixed urethra extending into the neophallus in all 3 patients (100%) who underwent prior gender confirming surgery. Mean rectal mucosa graft length for urethroplasty was 10.6 cm (range 3 to 16). Repair types included dorsal or ventral onlay, or 2-stage repair. Stricture recurred at a median followup of 13.5 months in 2 of 13 patients (15%). Postoperative complications included glans dehiscence, urethrocutaneous fistula and compartment syndrome in 1 patient each (7%). No rectal or bowel related complications were reported.ConclusionsUrethral reconstruction with a transanal harvested rectal mucosa graft is a safe technique when a buccal mucosa graft is unavailable or not indicated
Polymorphism of the rod visual pigment between allopatric populations of the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) : a microspectrophotometric study
Absorbance spectra were measured by microspectrophotometry in retinal rods of sand gobies (Pomatoschistus minutus) from four allopatric populations (Baltic Sea, Swedish west coast, English Channel and Adriatic Sea). Mean (± S.E.M.) wavelengths of maximum absorbance (max) were 508.3±0.5 nm, 505.4±0.2 nm, 506.2±0.3 nm and 503.0±0.3 nm, respectively. Pairwise comparison between the populations (post-ANOVA Scheffe's test) shows that each of the max differences, except that between the Swedish west coast and the English Channel, is statistically significant (P<0.05). The shapes of the absorbance spectra indicated that the pigments were A1 rhodopsins with no measurable admixture of the A2 chromophore. Thus, the differences indicate polymorphism in the protein part (opsin) of the pigment. Convolution of A1 templates for max values 508.3 nm and 503.0 nm with quantum spectra of the downwelling light at two locations at the south-west coast of Finland indicated that a 13-19% improvement in quantum catch would accrue in the Baltic environment from the 5.3 nm red-shift of the rod pigment of Baltic compared with Adriatic sand gobies
The possible role of physical activity in the modulation of gut microbiota in chronic kidney disease and its impact on cardiovascular risk: a narrative review
Chronic degenerative non-communicable diseases (CDNCDs), in particular chronic kidney disease, induce gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis, which, in turn, worsens the progression of CDNCDs and patients' quality of life. We analyzed literature studies to discuss the possible positive and beneficial impact of physical activity on GM composition and CV risk in CKD patients. Regular physical activity seems to be able to positively modulate the GM, reducing the systemic inflammation and consequently the production of uremic gut-derived toxins, which are directly correlated with the increase of cardiovascular risk. In particular, the accumulation of indoxyl sulphate (IS) seems to be able to induce vascular calcifications, vascular stiffness and cardiac calcifications, while p-Cresyl sulphate (p-CS) seems to be able to exert a cardiotoxic action through metabolic pathways, capable of inducing oxidative stress. In addition, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) can alter lipid metabolism, inducing the production of foam cells and causing an accelerated atherosclerosis process. In this context, a regular physical activity program seems to represent an adjuvant non-pharmacological approach to the clinical management of CKD patients

We propose an algorithm for computing the polar decomposition of a 3 × 3 real matrix that is based on the connection between orthogonal matrices and quaternions. An important application is to 3D transformations in the level 3 Cascading Style Sheets specification used in web browsers. Our algorithm is numerically reliable and requires fewer arithmetic operations than the alternative of computing the polar decomposition via the singular value decomposition

MP32-03 THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL DEPRIVATION ON ANTERIOR URETHRAL STRICTURE RECURRENCE AFTER URETHROPLASTY—A TRAUMA AND UROLOGIC RECONSTRUCTIVE NETWORK OF SURGEONS (TURNS) ANALYSIS
Pliocene colonization of the Mediterranean by Great White Shark inferred from fossil records, historical jaws, phylogeographic and divergence time analyses
Aim: Determine the evolutionary origin of the heretofore poorly characterized contemporary Great White Shark (GWS; Carcharodon carcharias) of the Mediterranean Sea, using phylogenetic and dispersal vicariance analyses to trace back its global palaeo-migration pattern. Location: Mediterranean Sea. Taxon: Carcharodon carcharias. Methods: We have built the largest mitochondrial DNA control region (CR) sequence dataset for the Mediterranean GWS from referenced historical jaws spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. Mediterranean and global GWS CR sequences were analysed for genetic diversity, phylogenetic relationships and divergence time. A Bayes factor approach was used to assess two scenarios of GWS lineage divergence and emergence of the Mediterranean GWS line using fossil records and palaeo-geographical events for calibration of the molecular clock. Results: The results confirmed a closer evolutionary relationship between Mediterranean GWS and populations from Australia–New Zealand and the North-eastern Pacific coast rather than populations from South African and North-western Atlantic. The Mediterranean GWS lineage showed the lowest genetic diversity at the global level, indicating its recent evolutionary origin. An evaluation of various divergence scenarios determined the Mediterranean GWS lineage most likely appeared some 3.23 million years ago by way dispersal/vicariance from Australian/Pacific palaeo-populations. Main conclusion: Based on the fossil records, phylogeographic patterns and divergence time, we revealed that the Mediterranean GWS population originated in the Pliocene following the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Colonization of the Mediterranean by GWS likely occurred via an eastward palaeo-migration of Australian/eastern Pacific elements through the Central American Seaway, before the complete closure of the Isthmus of Panama. This Pliocene origin scenario contrasts with a previously proposed scenario in which Australian GWS colonized the Mediterranean via antipodean northward migration resulting from navigational errors from South Africa during Quaternary climatic oscillations
