    No More Differentiator in PID:Development of Nonlinear Lead for Precision Mechatronics

    Industrial PID consists of three elements: Lag (integrator), Lead (Differentiator) and Low Pass Filters (LPF). PID being a linear control method is inherently bounded by the waterbed effect due to which there exists a trade-off between precision \& tracking, provided by Lag and LPF on one side and stability \& robustness, provided by Lead on the other side. Nonlinear reset strategies applied in Lag and LPF elements have been very effective in reducing this trade-off. However, there is lack of study in developing a reset Lead element. In this paper, we develop a novel lead element which provides higher precision and stability compared to the linear lead filter and can be used as a replacement for the same. The concept is presented and validated on a Lorentz-actuated nanometer precision stage. Improvements in precision, tracking and bandwidth are shown through two separate designs. Performance is validated in both time and frequency domain to ensure that phase margin achieved on the practical setup matches design theories.Comment: European Control Conference 201

    How kingdoms were forged: King Arthur, Queen Elizabeth, and the assimilation of self and other in the New Ancient World

    ABSTRACT Medieval xenophobia fostered attitudes that viewed anything foreign or distasteful as monstrous. Accordingly, insular inhabitants of the Middle Ages were constantly striving to distinguish Self from Other. My dissertation argues that sixteenth-century England began to reverse this trend: it began to reconcile difference, not by distinguishing Self from Other, but by blurring those distinctions. Visions of ancient Self and contemporary Other began to fuse as proponents of Imperial Britain sought to assimilate foreign monsters that were once considered barbaric, inferior, or inhuman. This method of assimilation is especially apparent during the Elizabethan Age of conquest in the New World. England's prophetic destiny was inextricably tied to its epic history, its Trojan ancestry, and its most glorified rulers, Brutus and his distant successor, King Arthur. Thus, reestablishing and rewriting Britain's legendary past became an exercise in securing its future. I maintain that John Dee (c. 1527-1608/9) and Edmund Spenser (c. 1552-1599) strategically fused ancient Britain and the New World via the figures of King Arthur and his alleged descendant, Queen Elizabeth. Portions of Dee's Brytanici Imperii Limites are explored to illustrate this connection, as are some of his arcane mystical pursuits. I further examine sections of Spenser's Faerie Queene in relation to Queen Elizabeth and King Arthur, and interpret Arthur in Faery lond as a metaphor for England in the New World. My introduction establishes the key features of the Galfridian tradition and its significance to the Tudor dynasty. It further discusses medieval perceptions of the monstrous that influenced the early-modern era. Subsequent chapters argue that England's assimilation of Other extended to pagan deities and giants, Native Americans, ancient Israelites, and (in Elizabeth's case) to the feminine Other. My final chapter demonstrates how Queen Elizabeth, via her affiliation with King Arthur, became a temporal bridge uniting England's epic past with its future glory

    Monitoring sound levels and soundscape quality in the living rooms of nursing homes : a case study in Flanders (Belgium)

    Recently there has been an increasing interest in the acoustic environment and its perceptual counterpart (i.e., the soundscape) of care facilities and their potential to affect the experience of residents with dementia. There is evidence that too loud sounds or poor soundscape quality more generally can affect negatively the quality of life of people with dementia and increase agitation. The AcustiCare project aims to use the soundscape approach to enhance the Quality of Life (QoL) of residents and to reduce Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), as well as improving the everyday experience of nursing homes for both residents and staff members. In order to gain further insights into the sound environments of such facilities, sound level monitoring and soundscape data collection campaigns were conducted in the living rooms of five nursing homes in Flanders. Results showed that sound levels (dB) and loudness levels (sone) did not vary significantly between days of the week, but they did so between moments of the day and between living rooms. From the perceptual point of view, several soundscape attributes and the perceived prominence of different sound source types varied significantly between the living rooms investigated, and a positive correlation was found between sound levels and the number of persons present in the living rooms. These findings claim for further attention on the potential role of the sound domain in nursing homes, which should promote (and not only permit) better living and working conditions for residents and staff members of nursing homes

    The properties of kaonic nuclei in relativistic mean-field theory

    The static properties of some possible light and moderate kaonic nuclei, from C to Ti, are studied in the relativistic mean-field theory. The 1s and 1p state binding energies of KK^- are in the range of 739673\sim 96 MeV and 226322\sim 63 MeV, respectively. The binding energies of 1p states increase monotonically with the nucleon number A. The upper limit of the widths are about 42±1442\pm 14 MeV for the 1s states, and about 71±1071\pm 10 MeV for the 1p states. The lower limit of the widths are about 12±412\pm 4 MeV for the 1s states, and 21±321\pm 3 MeV for the 1p states. If V030V_{0}\leq 30 MeV, the discrete KK^- bound states should be identified in experiment. The shrinkage effect is found in the possible kaonic nuclei.     Feasibility and impact of an evidence-based electronic decision support system for diabetes care in family medicine: protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial

    Background: In Belgium, the construction of the national electronic point-of-care information service, EBMPracticeNet, was initiated in 2011 to optimize quality of care by promoting evidence-based decision-making. The collaboration of the government, healthcare providers, Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) partners, and vendors of Electronic Health Records (EHR) is unique to this project. All Belgian healthcare professionals get free access to an up-to-date database of validated Belgian and nearly 1,000 international guidelines, incorporated in a portal that also provides EBM information from sources other than guidelines, including computerized clinical decision support that is integrated in the EHRs. The EBMeDS system is the electronic evidence-based decision support system of EBMPracticeNet. The EBMeDS system covers all clinical areas of diseases and could play a crucial role in response to the emerging challenge posed by chronic conditions. Diabetes was chosen as the analysis topic of interest. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of EBMeDS use in improving diabetes care. This objective will be enhanced by a formal process evaluation to provide crucial information on the feasibility of using the system in daily Belgian family medicine. Methods: The study is a cluster-randomized trial with before/after measurements conducted in Belgian family medicine. Physicians' practices will be randomly assigned to the intervention or control group in a 1: 1 ratio, to receive either the EBMeDS reminders or to follow the usual care process. Randomization will be performed by a statistical consultant with an electronic random list generator, anonymously for the researchers. The follow-up period of the study will be 12 months with interim analysis points at 3, 6 and 9 months. Primary outcome is the one-year pre- to post-implementation change in HbA1c. Patients will not be informed about the intervention. Data analysts will be kept blinded to the allocation. Discussion: The knowledge obtained in this study will be useful for further integration in other Belgian software packages. Users' perceptions and process evaluation will provide information for improving the feasibility of the system

    Advanced Photogrammetric Modeling of Dranoc Kullas Using Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems

    Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), also known as drones, offer new capabilities for cultural heritage preservation activities. Student researchers from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University have applied photogrammetric techniques based upon sUAS captured imagery to assist with historical site documentation and cultural heritage preservation in the Republic of Kosovo. Imagery from three locations -- Isniq, Dranoc and Junik -- highlight this work. Student researchers created georectified orthomosaics and 3D virtual objects. At each of these three locations the object of interest was a type of building known as a kulla. These kullas are fortified homes built for protecting large families and are unique to the region of Southeast Europe that was a former territory of the Ottoman Empire. A five-step process was followed during sUAS photogrammetric flights. These five steps are planning, preparing, conducting, analyzing and interpreting. Student researchers used two DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2s in order to conduct flights and gather images that were subsequently processed using Pix4Dmapper Pro to create virtual environments and high resolution georectified images. The efforts of this work can be used by non-governmental and governmental organizations for cultural heritage preservation purposes

    Future directions in kaonic atom physics

    Recent progress and open problems in kaonic atom physics are presented. A connection between phenomenological deep potentials and the underlying KNK^-N interaction is established as well as the need for a theory for multinucleon absorption of kaons.
