Spacelab 3 vapor crystal growth experiment
The Space Shuttle Challenger, with Spacelab 3 as its payload, was launched into orbit April 29, 1985. The mission, number 51-B, emphasized materials processing in space, although a wide variety of experiments in other disciplines were also carried onboard. One of the materials processing experiments on this flight is described, specifically the growth of single crystals of mercuric iodide by physical vapor transport
On board sampling of the rockfish and lingcod commerical passenger fishing vessel industry in northern and central California, May 1987 to December 1991

Fishery Technicians sampled catches on board 690 Commercial
Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) trips targeting rockfish and lingcod from the general port areas of Fort Bragg, Bodega Bay, San Francisco, Monterey, and Morro Bay. Data are presented for species composition by port area, year, and month, for catch-per-unit-effort, mean length, and length frequency of lingcod and the 18 most frequently observed rockfish species, and for trends in fishing effort related to fishing time, depth, and distance from port. Total catch estimates are presented based on unadjusted logbook records, logbook records adjusted by sampling data and compliance rates, and effort data from a marine recreational fishing statistics survey.
Average catch of kept fish per angler day was 11.8 and average catch of kept fish per angler hour was 3.7. A trend of an increasing frequency of trips to deep (>40 fm) locations was observed in the Bodega Bay, San Francisco, and Monterey areas from 1988 to 1990-91. No trend was evident relative to trip frequency and distance from port.
A total of 74 species was observed caught during the study.
Rockfishes comprised 88.5% to 97.9% by number of the observed catch by port area. The five most frequently observed species were chilipepper, blue, yellowtail, and widow rockfishes, and bocaccio, with lingcod ranking seventh.
In general, mean length and catch-per-angler-hour of sport
fishes caught by CPFV anglers varied considerably and did not show steady declines during the study period. However, port-specific areas of major concern were identified for
chilipepper, lingcod, and black rockfish, and to a lesser
extent brown, canary, vermilion, yelloweye, olive, and widow rockfish. These areas of concern included steadily declining catch rate, steadily declining mean length, and a high percentage of sexually immature fish in the sampled-catch.
Recent sampling of the commercial hook-and-line fishery in
northern and central California indicated that most species of rockfishes taken by CPFV anglers are also harvested commercially. (261pp.
Geometry-induced asymmetric diffusion
Past work has shown that ions can pass through a membrane more readily in one
direction than the other. We demonstrate here in a model and an experiment that
for a mixture of small and large particles such asymmetric diffusion can arise
solely from an asymmetry in the geometry of the pores of the membrane. Our
deterministic simulation considers a two-dimensional gas of elastic disks of
two sizes diffusing through a membrane, and our laboratory experiment examines
the diffusion of glass beads of two sizes through a metal membrane. In both
experiment and simulation, the membrane is permeable only to the smaller
particles, and the asymmetric pores lead to an asymmetry in the diffusion rates
of these particles. The presence of even a small percentage of large particles
can clog a membrane, preventing passage of the small particles in one direction
while permitting free flow of the small particles in the other direction. The
purely geometric kinetic constraints may play a role in common biological

Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in Praesepe
Presented are the results of a large and deep optical-near-infrared
multi-epoch survey of the Praesepe open star cluster using data from the UKIDSS
Galactic Clusters Survey. Multiple colour magnitude diagrams were used to
select potential members and proper motions were used to assign levels of
membership probability. From our sample, 145 objects were designated as high
probability members (p >= 0.6) with most of these having been found by previous
surveys although 14 new cluster members are also identified. Our membership
assignment is restricted to the bright sample of objects (Z < 18). From the
fainter sample, 39 candidates were found from an examination of multiple colour
magnitude plots. Of these, 2 have small but significant membership
probabilities. Finally, using theoretical models, cluster luminosity and mass
functions were plotted with the later being fitted with a power law of alpha =
1.11 +/- 0.37 for the mass range 0.6 to 0.125 Msun and an assumed cluster age
of 500 Myrs in the UKIDSS Z photometric band. Likewise taking an assumed
cluster age of 1 Gyr we find alpha = 1.10 +/- 0.37. Similar values were also
found for the J and K bands. These results compare favourably with the result
of Kraus & Hillenbrand (2007) (alpha = 1.4 +/- 0.2) but are significantly lower
than that of the more recent study conducted by Boudreault et al. (2009) (alpha

The Age of the Oldest Stars in the Local Galactic Disk From Hipparcos Parallaxes of G and K Subgiants
We review the history of the discovery of field subgiant stars and their
importance in the age dating of the Galactic disk. We use the cataloged data
from the Hipparcos satellite in this latter capacity. Based on Hipparcos
parallaxes accurate to 10% or better, the absolute magnitude of the lower
envelope of the nearly horizontal subgiant sequence for field stars in the H-R
diagram for B-V colors between 0.85 and 1.05 is measured to be M_V = 4.03 +/-
0.06. The age of the field stars in the solar neighborhood is found to be 7.9
+/- 0.7 Gyr by fitting the theoretical isochrones for [Fe/H] = +0.37 to the
lower envelope of the Hipparcos subgiants. The same grid of isochrones yields
ages, in turn, of 4.0 +/- 0.2 Gyr, 6.2 +/- 0.5 Gyr, and 7.5 to 10 Gyr for the
old Galactic clusters M67, NGC188, and NGC6791. The ages of both the Galactic
disk in the solar neighborhood and of NGC6791 are, nevertheless, likely between
3 and 5 Gyr younger than the oldest halo globular clusters, which have ages of
13.5 Gyr. The most significant results are (1) the supermetallicity of the
oldest local disk stars, and (2) the large age difference between the most
metal-poor component of the halo and the thick and thin disk in the solar
neighborhood. These facts are undoubtedly related and pose again the problem of
the proper scenario for the timing of events in the formation of the halo and

High resolution observations of Cassiopeia A at meter wavelengths
Very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A, at 74 MHz with a 12,000-wavelength baseline and at 111 MHz with a 18,500-wavelength baseline, are reported. The fringe amplitudes are strongly varying on a time scale of about 15 to 30 minutes. The location of the extra source must lie outside the supernova remnant shell possibly associated with a concentration of emission north of the shell, or lying outside the gap in the northeastern side of the shell. The flux and spectral index deduced for the compact source depend on the assumed size, with a range of 100 Jy to 500 Jy at 74 MHz. If the source is associated with the supernova explosion, it must have been traveling at least 5000 km s/2
Gamma-Ray Burst Sequences in Hardness Ratio-Peak Energy Plane
The narrowness of the distribution of the peak energy of
spectrum of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the unification of GRB population are
great puzzles yet to be solved. We investigate the two puzzles based on the
global spectral behaviors of different GRB population in the
plane (HR the spectral hardness ratio) with BATSE and HETE-2 observations. It
is found that long GRBs and XRFs observed by HETE-2 seem to follow the same
sequence in the plane, with the XRFs at the low end of this
sequence. The long and short GRBs observed by BATSE follow significantly
different sequences in the plane, with most of the short GRBs
having a larger hardness ratio than the long GRBs at a given .
These results indicate that the global spectral behaviors of the long GRB
sample and the XRF sample are similar, while that of short GRBs is different.
The short GRBs seem to be a unique subclass of GRBs, and they are not the
higher energy extension of the long GRBs (abridged).Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Visuo-spatial ability in colonoscopy simulator training
Visuo-spatial ability is associated with a quality of performance in a variety of surgical and medical skills. However, visuo-spatial ability is typically assessed using Visualization tests only, which led to an incomplete understanding of the involvement of visuo-spatial ability in these skills. To remedy this situation, the current study investigated the role of a broad range of visuo-spatial factors in colonoscopy simulator training. Fifteen medical trainees (no clinical experience in colonoscopy) participated in two psycho-metric test sessions to assess four visuo-spatial ability factors. Next, participants trained flexible endoscope manipulation, and navigation to the cecum on the GI Mentor II simulator, for four sessions within 1 week. Visualization, and to a lesser degree Spatial relations were the only visuo-spatial ability factors to correlate with colonoscopy simulator performance. Visualization additionally covaried with learning rate for time on task on both simulator tasks. High Visualization ability indicated faster exercise completion. Similar to other endoscopic procedures, performance in colonoscopy is positively associated with Visualization, a visuo-spatial ability factor characterized by the ability to mentally manipulate complex visuo-spatial stimuli. The complexity of the visuo-spatial mental transformations required to successfully perform colonoscopy is likely responsible for the challenging nature of this technique, and should inform training- and assessment design. Long term training studies, as well as studies investigating the nature of visuo-spatial complexity in this domain are needed to better understand the role of visuo-spatial ability in colonoscopy, and other endoscopic techniques
