___________________________ [1] Hindustan Times, By Leena Dhankhar, 13th November 2018 2 Hindustan Times, 3rd November 2018 3 The Deccan Chronicles, by Sonali Telang, 20th November 2018 4 Times of India, 21st October 2018 5 Hindustan Times, 30th August 2017 Today we live in constant fear of being victims or witnessing someone being a victim. Such is the condition of our society. Leave alone the world and let’s merely concentrate upon what India is facing in today’s time. On November 13, 2018 a 3 year old girl was raped in Gurugram and was later put to death after the rapist broke her leg for sexual arousal.1 On November 3, 2018 Tigress Avni became a victim of manipulated political and corporate ambitions. She was shot dead in the wee hours breaking all constitutional laws of wildlife and left behind 2 cubs to survive by themselves.2 After Avni, 13 more tigers were killed by mindless mob and a bear was burnt alive. Such is the condition of our national animal and wildlife. The horror of dipping ethics became evident when a dog was mercilessly raped to death by 4 men and his genital was mutilated in Mumbai on the unfaithful night of November 20th 2018.3 This was not the first time when an innocent animal was raped mercilessly. On October 21st 2018, 4 men raped a 4 day old calf in the dark streets of UP and there are more ghastly incidents where animals and young children become the object of one’s sexual frustrations.4 One is left speechless when saffron clad Yog Guru Baba Ramdev decides to cut down over 6000 trees in Noida to construct a fancy food park.5 After being witness to such hideous incidents of crime, we are left in a lull with a question ‘Where are we heading? As we progress in the scientific arena of astonishing and remarkable discoveries, we also confront the devil of inhumanity, diminished ethics and dipping morals before us. With a wide range of social evils from crime against women, animals and children to dowry deaths, terrorism and environmental haphazard mushrooming before us, it’s the need of the hour that we stop and seek guidance from our great texts and Rishis. The ideas and thoughts of the great Vedas and Upanishads are boud to be beneficial for one and all because one indeed is all and all indeed is one- Sarvam Khalu Idam Brahman!! Thus, across races, nationalities and religions this knowledge will only act as a unifying force. It will bring about mutual respect and elevate us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and ethically. Without biases of religion, nationality and race it’s time to revamp our education system and imbibe the Vedic knowledge which alone has the acumen to fight against the horrors of the society and once again put India on the pedestal of being the Universal Theacher-Vishwaguru

The role of culture in shaping children's play : memories of a playing girl

    Get PDF
Culture has had an important role in shaping children’s play throughout recorded history. The strategies for play are chosen by the set of customs of the particular society in relation to gender and culture. In societies like India, where gender boundaries are still rigid, children’s play is under constant surveillance to comply with the unwritten gender traditions that build barriers to constrain gender expressions. This study aims to discuss how the cultural and societal context and specifically cultural understandings of gender affect children’s play in India. By using an autoethnographic method, the study explores the relationship between gender and play in India. The childhood of the author is examined through the theoretical lens of Raewyn Connell’s work, to deepen the understanding of the role that gender has in shaping children’s play in India. This discussion will clarify the influence that gendering has in creating obstacles to the free expression of boys and girls while playing, from their earliest years. The findings of this study suggest that there are significant gender differences in Indian play settings which further restrict the playing options for children. The findings of this research will be helpful for early childhood educators in broadening their mental horizons and understandings of Indian playing culture

THE DOG-DEITY: DIVINITY, HISTORY AND DOGS IN ANCIENT SCRIPTURES

A sub specie of wolf that was domesticated came to be known as ‘Dog’. History suggests that Dogs have been human companions since Adams. They have been with humans and have been an integral part of their culture, lives, leanings extending to them emotional support, spiritual enrichment and adding to their very being. Based on DNA evidence, the wolf ancestors of modern dogs diverged from other wolves about 1,00,000 years ago, and dogs were domesticated about 15,000 years ago. Keeping in mind this date, it can be said with utmost certainty dogs were the first to be domesticated by humans and human-dog bond has its historical base. The relationship between human beings and dogs has deep roots, with archaeological and genetic evidence indicating a time of domestication in the late Upper Paleolithic Age, between 17,000 and 14,000 years ago. Dogs have been an important part of both Hinduism and Buddhism. They have been glorified and appreciated in various ancient texts. With time we have become cruel towards dogs for no reason. A mass killing of dogs in Kerala has jolted many of us. We as humans are said to have “Viveka†and yet an event like “war against canines†in Kerala talks about our low spiritual levels and our avidya. It is time that we realize how dogs have been a part of our age old history, philosophy, literature, art, yoga, dance and they still continue contribute to us medically, emotionally, physically, spiritually and by serving our nation. Is it not time that we rise above variations of forms and see the Brahman that exists within all, including dogs. It is time we go back to our texts and understand them in the right light so that we do not fail to give the respect dogs, animals and even humans deserve. We need to question ourselves whether or not with time we have touched higher planes of spirituality or have merely become slaves to names, forms and materialism? Should we respect and love dogs only because they serve us, only because they are or they can be of use to us? Only because our ancient texts talk highly of them, should we be bound to give them respect? Is their very being not enough or not a reason enough to love them, respect them and cherish them? While dogs continue to submit unconditionally and love humans, when will we humans offer our bhoota rinn to our four legged friends? This paper aims at digging into the past and bringing to fore references that glorify dogs in Hindu and Buddhist traditions besides which it will also throw light on how dogs have significantly added to literature, art and architecture

Background: Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional deficiency world over and in India. It is the most important cause of microcytic hypochromic anemia. Red cell distribution width (RDW) provides quantitative assessment of anisocytosis and could be helpful in differentiating iron deficiency anemia from other microcytic anemias. The objective behind this study was to assess the role of RDW as an early indicator in diagnosing iron deficiency anemia. Methods: A total of 100 cases of microcytic anemia (MCV <80fl) were included in the study. RDW values were obtained on an automated hematology analyser. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value of RDW in iron deficiency anemia were studied. Results: With cut off value of 14.5%, sensitivity and specificity of RDW as a test in diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia were 84.81% and 57.14% respectively and a positive and negative predictive value of 88.15% and 50% respectively. Conclusions: RDW has a high sensitivity and can be used as a simple, economical, reliable automated red blood cell parameter for initial diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia

    Get PDF
Facial expression emotion identification and prediction is one of the most difficult problems in computer science. Pre-processing and feature extraction are crucial components of the more conventional methods. For the purpose of emotion identification and prediction using 2D facial expressions, this study targets the Face Expression Recognition dataset and shows the real implementation or assessment of learning algorithms such as various CNNs. Due to its vast potential in areas like artificial intelligence, emotion detection from facial expressions has become an essential requirement. Many efforts have been done on the subject since it is both a challenging and fascinating challenge in computer vision. The focus of this study is on using a convolutional neural network supplemented with data to build a facial emotion recognition system. This method may use face images to identify seven fundamental emotions, including anger, contempt, fear, happiness, neutrality, sadness, and surprise. As well as improving upon the validation accuracy of current models, a convolutional neural network that takes use of data augmentation, feature fusion, and the NCA feature selection approach may assist solve some of their drawbacks. Researchers in this area are focused on improving computer predictions by creating methods to read and codify facial expressions. With deep learning's striking success, many architectures within the framework are being used to further the method's efficacy. We highlight the contributions dealt with, the architecture and databases used, and demonstrate the development by contrasting the offered approaches and the outcomes produced. The purpose of this study is to aid and direct future researchers in the subject by reviewing relevant recent studies and offering suggestions on how to further the field. An innovative feature-based transfer learning technique is created using the pre-trained networks MobileNetV2 and DenseNet-201. The suggested system's recognition rate is 75.31%, which is a significant improvement over the results of the prior feature fusion study
