    Vanaf het begin van de jaren negentig stelt de Werkgroep Uniformering berekening Mesten mineralencijfers (WUM) jaarlijks standaardfactoren vast voor de mestproductie en mineralenuitscheiding per diercategorie. Dit rapport geeft een overzicht van de rekenmethodiek en de uitgangspunten die door de werkgroep zijn toegepast. In 2009 is op verzoek van de Emissieregistratie een herberekening uitgevoerd voor de periode 1990–2006. In de herberekening zijn zoveel mogelijk nieuwe inzichten en tevens een aantal correcties verwerkt. In het voorliggende rapport worden alleen de actuele uitgangspunten voor de periode 1990 tot heden beschreven

    Integrated Image and X-Ray Microanalysis of Hepatic Lysosomes in a Patient with Idiopathic Hemosiderosis Before and After Treatment by Phlebotomy

    Morphometrical and X-ray elemental information was extracted from Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) images of hepatic lysosomes of a patient with idiopathic hemosiderosis before and after treatment by phlebotomy. The elements of interest were (i) iron, stored in pathological quantities in hepatic lysosomal structures and (ii) cerium, used as a capture ion after a cytochemical reaction to detect acid phosphatase activity in the lysosomal structures. Morphologically the lysosomal structures are heteromorph and the elements iron and cerium are heterogeneously distributed. With reduced raster (= reduced scanning area) analysis at 16 x 16 pixel points (integrating image and X-ray microanalysis), a marked difference in the area of the cross sectioned lysosomal structures before and after treatment could be demonstrated. Simultaneously the difference in the relative orientation of the elements iron and cerium before and after phlebotomy could be visualized. Chelex ion exchange beads, loaded with 11.5% w/w iron, and coembedded with the tissue blocks, were used as an internal standard. A mean iron peak to background ratio was obtained and a factor, converting ratio to absolute iron concentration, was calculated. The same calculation procedure, now per pixel point, was followed for the hepatic lysosomal structures. A marked difference in iron concentration in the individual lysosomal structures was observed before and after treatment by phlebotomy

    A search for Low Surface Brightness galaxies in the near-infrared I. Selection of the sample

    A sample of about 3,800 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies was selected using the all-sky near-infrared (J, H and K_s-band) 2MASS survey. The selected objects have a mean central surface brightness within a 5 arcsec radius around their centre fainter than 18 mag/sq.arcsec in the K_s band, making them the lowest surface brightness galaxies detected by 2MASS. A description is given of the relevant properties of the 2MASS survey and the LSB galaxy selection procedure, as well as of basic photometric properties of the selected objects. The latter properties are compared to those of other samples of galaxies, of both LSBs and `classical' high surface brightness (HSB) objects, which were selected in the optical. The 2MASS LSBs have a (B_T_c)-(K_T) colour which is on average 0.9 mag bluer than that of HSBs from the NGC.     Image Analysis and X-Ray Microanalysis in Cytochemistry

    When cytochemical reaction products are homogeneously distributed within an organelle, point analyses suffice for the quantitative approach. However, quantitative analysis becomes tedious, when the elements in the reaction product are inhomogeneously distributed. Problems arise when elements from two reaction products have to be related to each other, or to endogenous cytological products (ferritin, haemosiderin, calcium, electron dense markers), either topographically or in concentration. When analyzing inhomogeneous/heteromorphical reaction product-containing organelles special attention has to be paid to measure and relate both volume and concentration. In this paper a relative simple structure (eosinophil granules) is chosen to demonstrate that the acquisition of the requested morphometrical plus chemical information and their integration is possible. The following points will be covered to acquire the morphometrical and chemical information: a). How to estimate the total cell cross-sectioned area. b). How to estimate the total cross-sectioned area of all reaction product-containing particles inside that cell. The ratio of these two areas will provide the requested information about the particle volume fraction. By using the X-ray detector in addition: c). How to acquire the chemical information at the requested resolution, within a reasonable total acquisition time d). How to integrate the morphometrical and chemical data per organelle, by matrix analysis in a reduced scan area. e). How to acquire quantitative chemical information, by the use of cross-sectioned standards. f). How to make this acquisition method independent from changes in the instrumental conditions during the acquisition

    Variation in tospovirus transmission between populations of Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

    Fourteen populations of the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalisPergande, originating from different hosts and countries in Asia, Europe, North America and New Zealand, were analysed for their competency and efficiency to transmit tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). All populations acquired and subsequently transmitted the virus, and were thus competent to transmit. They show marked differences in their efficiency, expressed as the percentage of transmitting adults. Efficiencies varied from 18 or a F. occidentalis population from the USA (US2) to 75␈r a population from Israel (IS2). The differences between populations were not affected by the amount of virus ingested or by the host plant used. However, the tospovirus species studied and age at which the larvae acquired the virus affected the efficiency to transmit. First instar larvae of the NL3 population from The Netherlands were able to acquire tomato spotted wilt virus, whereas second instar larvae failed to do so. However, both instars of this population acquired impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV), another tospovirus. This and tomato spotted wilt virus were both acquired by both larval stages of the populations IS2 and US2, although their ability to acquire virus decreased with their age. Hence, it is likely that, in general, both instar larvae of most F. occidentalis populations are competent to acquire both tospoviruses. These results show that large differences exist in the efficiency by which tomato spotted wilt is transmitted by the various F. occidentalis populations and that the ability to acquire tospovirus decreases with the age of the larva

    Dissecting the luminosity function of the Coma cluster of galaxies using CFHT wide field images

    [Abridged] We determined the luminosity function (LF) of the Coma cluster galaxies selected by luminosity, and the LF bi-variate in central brightness. The Coma cluster and control fields were imaged using the CFH12K (42x28 arcmin) and UH8K (28x28 arcmin) wide-field cameras at the CFHT. Selected HST images were used for testing. Quantities were derived from measurements in at least two colors, which have the following features: (1) Galaxies as faint as three times the luminosity of the brightest globular clusters are in the completeness region of our data. (2) We have a complete census (in the explored region) of low surface brightness galaxies with central surface brightness galaxies almost as low as the faintest so far cataloged ones. (3) The explored area is among the largest ever sampled with CCDs at comparable depth for any cluster of galaxies. (4) The error budget includes all sources of errors known to date. Using HST images we also discovered that blends of globular clusters, not resolved in individual components due to seeing, look like dwarf galaxies when observed from the ground and are numerous and bright. The derived Coma LF is relatively steep (alpha=-1.4) over the 11 magnitudes sampled, but the slope and shape depend on color. A large population of faint low surface brightness galaxies was discovered, representing the largest contributor (in number) to the LF at faint magnitudes. We found a clear progression for a faintening of the LF from high surface brightness galaxies (mu~20 mag/arcsec2) to galaxies of very faint central brightnesses (mu~24.5 mag/arcsec2), and some evidence for a steepening.     The effect of treatment delay on quality of life and overall survival in head and neck cancer patients

    OBJECTIVE: Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are rapidly developing tumours, and substantial delay in treatment initiation is associated with decreased overall survival. The effect of delay on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of delay on QOL and overall survival. METHODS: Patients with mucosal HNSCC were prospectively included. HRQOL and 2-year overall survival were analysed using linear mixed-model analyses and cox regression, respectively. Delay was defined as care pathway interval (CPI) of ≥30 days between first consultation and treatment initiation. RESULTS: Median CPI was 39 days for the 173 patients included. A trend towards higher HRQOL-scores (indicating better HRQOL) during 2-year follow-up for patients with delay in treatment initiation was visible in the adjusted models (HRQOL summary score-β: 2.62, 95% CI: 0.57-4.67, p = 0.012). Factors associated with decreased overall survival were moderate comorbidities (HR: 5.10, 95% CI: 1.65-15.76, p = 0.005) and stage-IV tumours (HR: 12.37, 95% CI: 2.81-54.39, p = 0.001). Delay was not associated with worse overall survival. CONCLUSION: Timely treatment initiation is challenging, especially for patients with advanced tumours and initial radiotherapy treatment. Encountering delay in treatment initiation did not result in clinically relevant differences in HRQOL-scores or decreased overall survival during 2-year follow-up
