On the inertia of heat
Does heat have inertia? This question is at the core of a long-standing
controversy on Eckart's dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics. Here I show
that the troublesome inertial term in Eckart's heat flux arises only if one
insists on defining thermal diffusivity as a spacetime constant. I argue that
this is the most natural definition, and that all confusion disappears if one
considers instead the space-dependent comoving diffusivity, in line with the
fact that, in the presence of gravity, space is an inhomogeneous medium.Comment: 3 page
Further evidence that 1RXS J170849.0-400910 is an Anomalous X-ray pulsar
We report the results of two ROSAT HRI observations of the recently
discovered 11s X-ray pulsar 1RXS J170849.0-400910. A refined position with a
smaller error radius (10" uncertainty) and a new spin period measurement were
obtained. These results allowed to derive a period derivative of about 7 times
10^-4 s yr^-1 and to perform a photometric and spectroscopic study of the
possible optical counterparts of the source. The limits derived from the
optical to X-ray flux ratio exclude the presence of a massive OB companion.
These findings, together with the nearly constant X-ray flux, the stability of
the pulse shape and pulsed fraction across observations spanning three years,
strongly support the inclusion of this 11s pulsar in the class of Anomalous

The spatial and age distribution of stellar populations in DDO 190
The spatial distribution of stellar populations, the star formation history,
and other properties of the dIrr galaxy DDO 190 have been analyzed using
color--magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of about 3900 resolved stars and the Ha fluxes
of HII regions. From the mean color index of the red giant branch, a mean
metallicity [Fe/H]=-2.0 is obtained. The I magnitude of the TRGB has been used
to estimate the distance. DDO 190 is 2.9+/-0.2 Mpc from the Milky Way, 2.1 Mpc
from the M 94 group (CnV-I), 2.4 Mpc from the M 81 group and 2.9 Mpc from the
barycenter of the Local Group, all indicating that it is an isolated, field
galaxy. The surface-brightness distribution of the galaxy is well fitted by
ellipses of ellipticity e=1-a/b=0.1 and P.A.=82deg. The radial star density
distribution follows an exponential law of scale length a=43."4, corresponding
to 611 pc. The Holmberg semi-major axis to mu_B=26.5 is estimated to be
r^B_(26.5)=3.'0. Stellar populations of different ages in DDO 190 show strong
spatial decoupling, the oldest population appearing much more extended than the
youngest. Stars younger than 0.1 Gyr occupy only the central 40'' (0.55 kpc);
stars younger than a few (~4) Gyr extend out to ~80'' (125 kpc), and for larger
galactocentric distances only older stars seem to be present. This behavior is
found in all the dIrr galaxies for which spatially extended studies have been
performed and could be related with the kinematical history of the galaxy.Comment: To be published in the AJ. 29 pages, 13 figure
Regularization of Brane Induced Gravity
We study the regularization of theories of ``brane induced'' gravity in
codimension . The brane can be interpreted as a thin dielectric with a
large dielectric constant, embedded in a higher dimensional space. The kinetic
term for the higher dimensional graviton is enhanced over the brane. A four
dimensional gravitation is found on the brane at distances smaller than a
critical distance , and is due to the exchange of a massive resonant
graviton. The crossover scale is determined by the mass of the resonance.
The suppression of the couplings of light Kaluza-Klein modes to brane matter
results in a higher dimensional force law at large distances. We show that the

This retrospective matched cohort analysis compared effectiveness of a representative small-particle ICS (extrafine beclomethasone) and larger-particle ICS (fluticasone) in primary care patients with COPD. Patients and methods: Smokers and ex-smokers with COPD ≥40 years old initiating or stepping-up their dose of extrafine beclomethasone or fluticasone were matched 1:1 for demographic characteristics, index prescription year, concomitant therapies, and disease severity during 1 baseline year. During 2 subsequent years, we evaluated treatment change and COPD exacerbations, defined as emergency care/hospitalization for COPD, acute oral corticosteroids, or antibiotics for lower respiratory tract infection. Results: Mean patient age was 67 years, 57%–60% being male. For both initiation (n=334:334) and step-up (n=189:189) patients, exacerbation rates were comparable between extrafine beclomethasone and fluticasone cohorts during the 2 year outcome period. Odds of treatment stability (no exacerbation or treatment change) were significantly greater for patients initiating extrafine beclomethasone compared with fluticasone (adjusted odds ratio 2.50; 95% confidence interval, 1.32–4.73). Median ICS dose exposure during 2 outcome years was significantly lower (P<0.001) for extrafine beclomethasone than fluticasone cohorts (315 µg/day versus 436 µg/day for initiation, 438 µg/day versus 534 µg/day for step-up patients). Conclusion: We observed that small-particle ICS at significantly lower doses had comparable effects on exacerbation rates as larger-particle ICS at higher doses, whereas initiation of small-particle ICS was associated with better odds of treatment stability during 2-years' follow-up. Casimir forces in a T operator approach
We explore the scattering approach to Casimir forces. Our main tool is the
description of Casimir energy in terms of transition operators, as presented in
Kenneth and Klich, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 160401 (2006). We study the convergence
properties of the formula and how to utilize it, together with scattering data
to compute the force. We illustrate the approach by describing the force
between scatterers in 1d and 3d,, and in particular show how it may be applied
in order to study the interaction between two spherical bodies at all
distances
Cardiovascular-renal axis disorders in the domestic dog and cat: a veterinary consensus statement
OBJECTIVES
There is a growing understanding of the complexity of interplay between renal and cardiovascular systems in both health and disease. The medical profession has adopted the term "cardiorenal syndrome" (CRS) to describe the pathophysiological relationship between the kidney and heart in disease. CRS has yet to be formally defined and described by the veterinary profession and its existence and importance in dogs and cats warrant investigation. The CRS Consensus Group, comprising nine veterinary cardiologists and seven nephrologists from Europe and North America, sought to achieve consensus around the definition, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of dogs and cats with "cardiovascular-renal disorders" (CvRD). To this end, the Delphi formal methodology for defining/building consensus and defining guidelines was utilised.
METHODS
Following a literature review, 13 candidate statements regarding CvRD in dogs and cats were tested for consensus, using a modified Delphi method. As a new area of interest, well-designed studies, specific to CRS/CvRD, are lacking, particularly in dogs and cats. Hence, while scientific justification of all the recommendations was sought and used when available, recommendations were largely reliant on theory, expert opinion, small clinical studies and extrapolation from data derived from other species.
RESULTS
Of the 13 statements, 11 achieved consensus and 2 did not. The modified Delphi approach worked well to achieve consensus in an objective manner and to develop initial guidelines for CvRD.
DISCUSSION
The resultant manuscript describes consensus statements for the definition, classification, diagnosis and management strategies for veterinary patients with CvRD, with an emphasis on the pathological interplay between the two organ systems. By formulating consensus statements regarding CvRD in veterinary medicine, the authors hope to stimulate interest in and advancement of the understanding and management of CvRD in dogs and cats. The use of a formalised method for consensus and guideline development should be considered for other topics in veterinary medicine
A search for radio supernovae and supernova remnants in the region of NGC1569's super star clusters
We have used MERLIN, at 1.4 and 5 GHz, to search for radio supernovae (RSNe)
and supernova remnants (SNRs) in the unobscured irregular dwarf galaxy NGC1569,
and in particular in the region of its super star clusters (SSCs) A and B.
Throughout NGC1569 we find some 5 RSNe and SNRs but the SSCs and their
immediate surroundings are largely devoid of non-thermal radio sources. Even
though many massive stars in the SSCs are expected to have exploded already,
when compared with M82 and its many SSCs the absence of RSNe and SNRs in and
near A and B may seem plausible on statistical arguments. The absence of RSNe
and SNRs in and near A and B may, however, also be due to a violent and
turbulent outflow of stellar winds and supernova ejected material, which does
not provide a quiescent environment for the development of SNRs within and near

van Vleck determinants: geodesic focussing and defocussing in Lorentzian spacetimes
The van Vleck determinant is an ubiquitous object, arising in many physically
interesting situations such as: (1) WKB approximations to quantum time
evolution operators and Green functions. (2) Adiabatic approximations to heat
kernels. (3) One loop approximations to functional integrals. (4) The theory of
caustics in geometrical optics and ultrasonics. (5) The focussing and
defocussing of geodesic flows in Riemannian manifolds. While all of these
topics are interrelated, the present paper is particularly concerned with the
last case and presents extensive theoretical developments that aid in the
computation of the van Vleck determinant associated with geodesic flows in
Lorentzian spacetimes. {\sl A fortiori} these developments have important

Infrared and X-ray variability of the transient Anomalous X-ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197
We report on observations aimed at searching for flux variations from the
proposed IR counterpart of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197. These
data, obtained in March 2004 with the adaptive optics camera NAOS-CONICA at the
ESO VLT, show that the candidate proposed by Israel et al. (2004) was fainter
by Delta H=0.7+/-0.2 and Delta Ks=0.5+/-0.1 with respect to October 2003,
confirming it as the IR counterpart of XTE J1810-197. We also report on an
XMM-Newton observation carried out the day before the VLT observations. The
0.5-10 keV absorbed flux of the source was 2.2x10^-11 erg/s/cm^2, which is less
by a factor of about two compared to the previous XMM-Newton observation on
September 2003. Therefore, we conclude that a similar flux decrease took place
in the X-ray and IR bands. We briefly discuss these results in the framework of
the proposed mechanism(s) responsible for the IR variable emission of Anomalous
