    Generalization and performance improvement of a coherence multiplexing system

    Usually a coherence multiplexing system uses delay-filters at the transmitter and receiver to perform the code. An extension to other filter types is described. Using a continuous source the signal-to-beat noise ratio is proportional to the square of the inverse of the number of simultaneous users. A further extension is made by using a pulsed source and by replacing the filters by banks of filters. Each element of each filter bank also comprizes a unique delay. In that case the SNR can be made proportional to the inverse of the number of users, so that more users can be handled simultaneously

    La mayoría de los esfuerzos para ayudar a las sociedades a adaptarse al cambio climático se han centrado en enfoques impuestos desde el gobierno hacia la comunidad, sin tener en cuenta los factores locales como modos de vida, ubicación geográfica, riesgos climáticos y características socioeconómicas. La adaptación de base comunitaria, pretende que con base al conocimiento y la experiencia local se generen estrategias de adaptación al cambio climático (comunidad- gobierno). La obtención de ese conocimiento por parte de los investigadores, se hace generalmente a través de encuestas y más recientemente por medio de metodologías participativas, que se aplican en talleres. Sin embargo, la eficacia de estas metodólogas en obtener información clave para generar planes de adaptación al cambio climático ha sido poco evaluada. Por esto Bioversity International y Fundación Conserva evalúan la eficacia de estas metodologías, agrupadas en un kit de herramientas, y comparan los resultados con los obtenidos a través de la encuesta línea base a nivel de hogar de CCAFS. Los resultados sugieren que el kit recopila información clave que permite generar planes de adaptación al cambio climático, aunque comparándolo con otros kits usados para el mismo fin, podría ser mejorado. Se sugiere incluir la forma de recopilación y análisis de la información, omitir actividades que colectan información repetitiva y ajustar la duración de las actividades del kit, para que se acomoden a las actividades rurales. Tanto, la encuesta como las metodologías participativas permiten la recopilación de información valiosa y complementaria. La encuesta requiere de menos tiempo para realizarse y no depende de la asistencia de las personas a los talleres. También, facilita la recolección de información personal y a nivel de cada hogar y permite la entrada a las viviendas para tener una idea de las condiciones de vida. Por otro lado, no facilita la obtención de información que requiera discusión y análisis de situaciones colectivas y que se abordan mejor de manera participativa. Además, las metodologías participativas promueven la interacción entre participantes e investigadores lo que facilita identificar miembros claves de la comunidad

    A Chandra Proper Motion for PSR J1809-2332

    We report on a new Chandra exposure of PSR J1809-2332, the recently discovered pulsar powering the bright EGRET source 3EG J1809-2328. By registration of field X-ray sources in an archival exposure, we measure a significant proper motion for the pulsar point source over an ~11 year baseline. The shift of 0.30+/-0.06" (at PA= 153.3+/-18.4) supports an association with proposed SNR parent G7.5-1.7. Spectral analysis of diffuse emission in the region also supports the interpretation as a hard wind nebula trail pointing back toward the SNR.Comment: To Appear in the Astrophysical Journal, Sept 1 (v. 756

    Rings and Jets around PSR J2021+3651: the `Dragonfly Nebula'

    We describe recent Chandra ACIS observations of the Vela-like pulsar PSR J2021+3651 and its pulsar wind nebula (PWN). This `Dragonfly Nebula' displays an axisymmetric morphology, with bright inner jets, a double-ridged inner nebula, and a ~30" polar jet. The PWN is embedded in faint diffuse emission: a bow shock-like structure with standoff ~1' brackets the pulsar to the east and emission trails off westward for 3-4'. Thermal (kT=0.16 +/-0.02 keV) and power law emission are detected from the pulsar. The nebular X-rays show spectral steepening from Gamma=1.5 in the equatorial torus to Gamma=1.9 in the outer nebula, suggesting synchrotron burn-off. A fit to the `Dragonfly' structure suggests a large (86 +/-1 degree) inclination with a double equatorial torus. Vela is currently the only other PWN showing such double structure. The >12 kpc distance implied by the pulsar dispersion measure is not supported by the X-ray data; spectral, scale and efficiency arguments suggest a more modest 3-4 kpc.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, Accepted to Ap

    Adaptive Importance Sampling for Performance Evaluation and Parameter Optimization of Communication Systems

    We present new adaptive importance sampling techniques based on stochastic Newton recursions. Their applicability to the performance evaluation of communication systems is studied. Besides bit-error rate (BER) estimation, the techniques are used for system parameter optimization. Two system models that are analytically tractable are employed to demonstrate the validity of the techniques. As an application to situations that are analytically intractable and numerically intensive, the influence of crosstalk in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) crossconnect is assessed. In order to consider a realistic system model, optimal setting of thresholds in the detector is carried out while estimating error rate performances. Resulting BER estimates indicate that the tolerable crosstalk levels are significantly higher than predicted in the literature. This finding has a strong impact on the design of WDM networks. Power penalties induced by the addition of channels can also be accurately predicted in short run-time

    The COOH terminus of the c-Abl tyrosine kinase contains distinct F- and G-actin binding domains with bundling activity

    The myristoylated form of c-Abl protein, as well as the P210bcr/abl protein, have been shown by indirect immunofluorescence to associate with F-actin stress fibers in fibroblasts. Analysis of deletion mutants of c-Abl stably expressed in fibroblasts maps the domain responsible for this interaction to the extreme COOH-terminus of Abl. This domain mediates the association of a heterologous protein with F-actin filaments after microinjection into NIH 3T3 cells, and directly binds to F-actin in a cosedimentation assay. Microinjection and cosedimentation assays localize the actin-binding domain to a 58 amino acid region, including a charged motif at the extreme COOH-terminus that is important for efficient binding. F-actin binding by Abl is calcium independent, and Abl competes with gelsolin for binding to F- actin. In addition to the F-actin binding domain, the COOH-terminus of Abl contains a proline-rich region that mediates binding and sequestration of G-actin, and the Abl F- and G-actin binding domains cooperate to bundle F-actin filaments in vitro. The COOH terminus of Abl thus confers several novel localizing functions upon the protein, including actin binding, nuclear localization, and DNA binding. Abl may modify and receive signals from the F-actin cytoskeleton in vivo, and is an ideal candidate to mediate signal transduction from the cell surface and cytoskeleton to the nucleus

    Low loss, high contrast optical waveguides based on CMOS compatible LPCVD processing

    A new class of integrated optical waveguide structures is presented, based on low cost CMOS compatible LPCVD processing. This technology allows for medium and high index contrast waveguides with very low channel attenuation. The geometry is basically formed by a rectangular cross-section silicon nitride (Si3N4)(Si_{3}N_{4}) filled with and encapsulated by silicon dioxide (SiO2)(SiO_{2}). The birefringence and minimal bend radius of the waveguide is completely controlled by the geometry of the waveguide layer structures. Experiments on typical geometries will be presented, showing excellent characteristics (channel attenuation ≤0.06 dB/cm, IL ≤0.6 dB, PDL ≤0.2 dB, Bg «1 x 10310^{-3}, bend radius ≤500 μm)

    Multidisciplinary decision-making in older patients with cancer, does it differ from younger patients?

    Background: In order to tailor treatment to the individual patient, it is important to take the patients context and preferences into account, especially for older patients. We assessed the quality of information used in the decision-making process in different oncological MDTs and compared this for older (>70 years) and younger patients. Patients and methods: Cross-sectional observations of oncological MDTs were performed, using an observation tool in a University Hospital. Primary outcome measures were quality of input of information into the discussion for older and younger patients. Secondary outcomes were the contribution of different team members, discussion time for each case and whether or not a treatment decision was formulated. Results: Five-hundred and three cases were observed. The median patient age was 63 year, 32% were >70. In both age groups quality of patient-centered information (psychosocial information and patient's view) was poor. There was no difference in quality of information between older and younger patients, only for comorbidities the quality of information for older patients was better. There was no significant difference in the contributions by team members, discussion time (median 3.54 min) or number of decision reached (87.5%). Conclusion: For both age groups, we observed a lack of patient-centered information. The only difference between the age groups was for information on comorbidities. There were also no differences in contributions by different team members, case discussion time or number of decisions. Decision-making in the observed oncological MDTs was mostly based on medical technical information. (c) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Editorial: Fire regimes in desert ecosystems: Drivers, impacts and changes

    Although not commonly associated with fire, many desert ecosystems across the globe do occasionally burn, and there is evidence that fire incidences are increasing, leading to altered fire regimes in this biome. The increased prevalence of megafires (wildfires \u3e 10,000 ha in size and typically damaging) in most global biomes is linked to climate change, although those occurring in deserts have received far less attention, from both a research and policy perspective, than that of forested ecosystems (Linley et al., 2022). Understanding the drivers of desert fires, from climate to landscape patterns of hydrology and soil, and how these may be changing in the face of anthropogenic pressures, such as invasive species, livestock grazing, and global climate change, is imperative. This Research Topic has published nine papers addressing these drivers, how they have changed, and their impacts on desert biodiversity

    Protein-rich legume and pseudo-cereal crop suitability under present and future European climates

    Open Access Article; Published online: 29 Nov 2019.Replacing animal proteins with plant proteins in diets has been demonstrated to have both health and environmental advantages, driving a debate about the potential of protein-rich crops as dietary replacements for animal products. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how climate change could influence the potential for producing protein-rich crops. This study addresses this knowledge gap for the European Union. We analysed 13 protein-rich crops, using the crop suitability model EcoCrop and climate projections for the 2050s, based on 30 Global Circulation Models, under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5. The results suggest that current protein-rich crop distributions reflect climatic suitability. We demonstrate the heterogeneous impacts of climate change on crop suitability. In general, conditions in northern Europe were modelled to become more favourable for protein-rich crops, while in southern Europe modelled future climates limit the production of traditional protein-rich crops commonly grown there, including chickpea and lentil. Model results show an expanded area of high suitability for quinoa. Our results confirm the need for concerted breeding and research planning strategies to improve the tolerance of faba bean, lentil, and chickpea to the abiotic stresses that are predicted to become more common with climate change. At the same time, production in northern Europe can benefit from experimentation with protein-rich crops predicted to become more suitable there. Production planning and agricultural policy should consider these likely impacts, to encourage shifts that follow the emerging geographic patterns of crop suitability, and to support the resilience of protein-rich crop production in regions that may be negatively impacted by climate change
