Counting loop diagrams: computational complexity of higher-order amplitude evaluation

    Get PDF
We discuss the computational complexity of the perturbative evaluation of scattering amplitudes, both by the Caravaglios-Moretti algorithm and by direct evaluation of the individual diagrams. For a self-interacting scalar theory, we determine the complexity as a function of the number of external legs. We describe a method for obtaining the number of topologically inequivalent Feynman graphs containing closed loops, and apply this to one- and two-loop amplitudes. We also compute the number of graphs weighted by their symmetry factors, thus arriving at exact and asymptotic estimates for the average symmetry factor of diagrams. We present results for the asymptotic number of diagrams up to 10 loops, and prove that the average symmetry factor approaches unity as the number of external legs becomes large.Comment: 27 pages, 17 table

Technological advances in molecular pathology : a journey into the archives

    Get PDF
Pathology laboratories throughout the world have compiled large archives of unique collections of tissue specimens. These tissue samples are used for patient diagnostics and research. Novel molecular insights into alterations in normal cellular function have led to the identification of targets for innovative therapies. Testing for biomarkers combined with molecular pathology has created the potential for __personalized medicine__ and improved diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. New technologies for molecular analysis in molecular tumor diagnostics and research must be developed and implemented to keep pace with the latest insights, resulting in a constant cycle of change. Such translational research can only progress if patient material can be accessed from the archives for further study. The resulting new insights and strategies will eventually be implemented in patient care. This thesis describes three important issues in this cycle of change with a focus on molecular pathology. Tissue preparation, method development and data analysis.UBL - phd migration 201

Notes on determinations of nitrate in plant material.

    Get PDF
The determination of nitrate in extracts of plants including grass, maize, sugarbeet leaves, lucerne, peas, cucumber, radish and lettuce by 3 different methods was tested. The methods based on nitration of O'-xylenol and dialysis of plant extracts and reduction of nitrate to nitrite ions by a Cu-Cd reductor were equally satisfactory. No influence of the extraction ratio was found. Extraction of plant material with water or electrolyte solution gave comparable results. Direct potentiometry gave too high results at lower nitrate ion levels. This phenomenon depends on the nature of plant material analysed and is apparently caused by organic anions. For spinach, the electrode can be used when the nitrate content is about 300 mmol nitrate/kg DM or higher. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission
