    The K-theory of free quantum groups

    In this paper we study the K -theory of free quantum groups in the sense of Wang and Van Daele, more precisely, of free products of free unitary and free orthogonal quantum groups. We show that these quantum groups are K -amenable and establish an analogue of the Pimsner–Voiculescu exact sequence. As a consequence, we obtain in particular an explicit computation of the K -theory of free quantum groups. Our approach relies on a generalization of methods from the Baum–Connes conjecture to the framework of discrete quantum groups. This is based on the categorical reformulation of the Baum–Connes conjecture developed by Meyer and Nest. As a main result we show that free quantum groups have a γ -element and that γ=1 . As an important ingredient in the proof we adapt the Dirac-dual Dirac method for groups acting on trees to the quantum case. We use this to extend some permanence properties of the Baum–Connes conjecture to our setting

    Routine abdominal ultrasonography has limited value in the care for patients with indolent systemic mastocytosis

    Objectives: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a myeloproliferative disease characterized by the accumulation of aberrant mast cells. Since advanced subtypes of SM can lead to organ dysfunction and shortened survival, timely recognition of progressive disease is important for the adequate treatment of SM patients. Methods: Here, we report the results of our cohort study on the value of routine abdominal ultrasonography for the detection of progression of indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM). Results: We included 88 patients with ISM, of whom 9 developed new hepatosplenomegaly during follow-up. In this group, the median serum tryptase level increased by 11.60 μg/l, compared with a decrease of −0.20 μg/l in the 79 patients with unchanged ultrasonography results (p = 0.016). A change in liver and/or spleen size never led to a change in clinical classification, nor management. Discussion: Based on the finding that a change in ultrasonography findings did not correlate to disease progression in general, it appears that isolated hepatosplenomegaly does not have prognostic implications in patients with ISM. Conclusions: Routine abdominal ultrasonography is redundant in the follow-up of patients with ISM. A combination of physical examination with serum tryptase levels can be used to screen for hepatosplenomegaly

    The Basophil Activation Test Is Not a Useful Screening Tool for Hymenoptera Venom-Related Anaphylaxis in Patients with Systemic Mastocytosis

    Background: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) patients are at a high risk for anaphylaxis, with Hymenoptera as the main culprit. A screening instrument to identify which patients are sensitized to Hymenoptera before they experience anaphylaxis would therefore be of great value. The basophil activation test (BAT) is proposed as a possible tool for diagnosing Hymenoptera venom-related allergy (HVA), especially in patients in whom conventional allergy tests yield contradictory results. Methods: We included outpatients with SM, according to WHO criteria, from September 2011 to January 2012. Next, to obtain various clinical data including intradermal test results, specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) measurements and BAT were performed. Results: We included 29 patients, 9 of whom had a history of HVA and 4 of whom had experienced anaphylaxis due to other triggers. Sixteen patients had no history of anaphylaxis. sIgE was detected in 6 patients with HVA and in 2 patients with anaphylaxis due to other triggers. The BAT was positive in only 1 patient, in whom the skin test and sIgE were also positive. Compared to patients with skin lesions, those without skin lesions had significantly more anaphylaxis and sIgE to Hymenoptera. During a 3-year follow-up, no one experienced new anaphylactic episodes. Conclusion: The BAT is not a reliable tool for randomly screening SM patients for HVA

    Bone Mineral Density in Sjögren Syndrome Patients with and Without Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis

    Primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) can be complicated by distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), which may contribute to low bone mineral density (BMD). Our objective was to evaluate BMD in pSS patients with and without dRTA as compared with healthy controls. BMD of lumbar spine (LS) and femoral neck (FN) was measured in 54 pSS patients and 162 healthy age- and sex-matched controls by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). dRTA was defined as inability to reach urinary pH <5.3 after an ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) test. LS- and FN-BMD were significantly higher in pSS patients compared with controls (1.18 ± 0.21 g/cm2 for patients vs. 1.10 ± 0.18 g/cm2 for controls, P = 0.00

    A Characterization of right coideals of quotient type and its application to classification of Poisson boundaries

    Let GG be a co-amenable compact quantum group. We show that a right coideal of GG is of quotient type if and only if it is the range of a conditional expectation preserving the Haar state and is globally invariant under the left action of the dual discrete quantum group. We apply this result to theory of Poisson boundaries introduced by Izumi for discrete quantum groups and generalize a work of Izumi-Neshveyev-Tuset on SUq(N)SU_q(N) for co-amenable compact quantum groups with the commutative fusion rules. More precisely, we prove that the Poisson integral is an isomorphism between the Poisson boundary and the right coideal of quotient type by maximal quantum subgroup of Kac type.     The 600 yr eruptive history of Villarrica Volcano (Chile) revealed by annually laminated lake sediments

    Lake sediments contain valuable information about past volcanic and seismic events that have affected the lake catchment, and they provide unique records of the recurrence interval and magnitude of such events. This study uses a multilake and multiproxy analytical approach to obtain reliable and high-resolution records of past natural catastrophes from similar to 600-yr-old annually laminated (varved) lake sediment sequences extracted from two lakes, Villarrica and Calafquen, in the volcanically and seismically active Chilean Lake District. Using a combination of micro-X-ray fluorescence (mu XRF) scanning, microfacies analysis, grain-size analysis, color analysis, and magnetic-susceptibility measurements, we detect and characterize four different types of event deposits (lacustrine turbidites, tephra-fall layers, runoff cryptotephras, and lahar deposits) and produce a revised eruption record for Villarrica Volcano, which is unprecedented in its continuity and temporal resolution. Glass geochemistry and mineralogy also reveal deposits of eruptions from the more remote Carran-Los Venados volcanic complex, Quetrupillan Volcano, and the Huanquihue Group in the studied lake sediments. Time-series analysis shows 112 eruptions with a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) >= 2 from Villarrica Volcano in the last similar to 600 yr, of which at least 22 also produced lahars. This significantly expands our knowledge of the eruptive frequency of the volcano in this time window, compared to the previously known eruptive history from historical records. The last VEI >= 2 eruption of Villarrica Volcano occurred in 1991. Based on the last similar to 500 yr, for which we have a complete record from both lakes, we estimate the probability of the occurrence of future eruptions from Villarrica Volcano and statistically demonstrate that the probability of a 22 yr repose period (anno 2013) without VEI >= 2 eruptions is <= 1.7%. This new perspective on the recurrence interval of eruptions and historical lahar activity will help improve volcanic hazard assessments for this rapidly expanding tourist region, and it highlights how lake records can be used to significantly improve historical eruption records in areas that were previously uninhabited
