Synthesis of novel trivalent amino acid glycoconjugates based on the cyclotriveratrylene ('CTV') scaffold

    No full text
The convenient synthesis of novel trivalent amino acid glycoconjugates based on cyclotriveratrylene (‘CTV’) is described. These constructs consist of the CTV scaffold, three oligoethylene glycol spacers of variable length connected to a glyco amino acid residue which can also be varied. The resulting library of trivalent glycoconjugates can be used for studying multivalent interactions

Improving leadership in higher education institutions: a distributed perspective.

    No full text
This paper reports on a qualitative study exploring how distributed patterns of leadership manifest themselves in project teams within a Higher Education institution. The emphasis is on both the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of distributed leadership, thus providing an account of the nature of distributed leadership in higher education and the factors which were found to enhance and inhibit its occurrence and effectiveness. The findings are presented in a model of distributed leadership which seeks to provide an integrative account and a framework for further study. The conclusions focus on both the theoretical implications for the study of distributed leadership and the practical implications for HE institutions wishing to promote effective leadership

Peptidomimetic building blocks for the synthesis of sulfonamide peptoids

    No full text
There is a constant demand for novel building blocks for combinatorial chemistry applications. A one-pot synthesis of a novel class of peptidomimetic building blocks to be used for the preparation of sulfonamide peptoids, is presented here. Furthermore, it is shown that these compounds can be incorporated in a peptide sequence

Emergent Constructions: Experiments Towards Generative On-Site Design and Build Strategies Using Customised Digital Devices

    No full text
This paper presents a currently ongoing research trajectory, investigating integrated design and build workflows using generative design strategies and custom built fabrication devices. The aim of the research, which is being developed through a series of experiments and workshops, is to explore scenarios in which these work-flows can produce emergent architectural structures which are highly adapted towards the intended performance within their specific context and site. The research has produced a number of installations and prototypical structures which explore practical and theoretical dimensions of the methodology explored. It introduces intriguing new scenarios in which the architects' role is focused on the indirect control of the process of design, allowing for a more open-ended process of negotiation between structure, users and environment

Towards the synthesis of sulfonamide-based RNA mimetics

    No full text
The scalable, divergent synthesis of all four monomers required for the preparation of sulfonamide-based RNA mimetics is described. Such mimetics may combine excellent mimicry of the parent RNA with enhanced (bio)chemical robustness and convenient oligomerization. As a proof of principle, a dimer resulting from the monomers is described

New Modified Tyrosine Amino Acid Comprising Substituted 2-Methyl-3-Phenyl-Propionic Acid Compounds, Useful in Synthetic Peptide and Array, for Detecting Hydrolase Enzyme Activity E.G. Phosphatase and EC 3.1, and Peptide Synthesis

The present invention relates to a method and tools which allow the kinetic monitoring of hydrolase enzyme activity. The present invention also aims to provide synthetic peptides and peptide residues modified such that they can be used in assays for monitoring hydrolase enzyme activity, and preferably phosphatase activity. Also claimed are modified tyrosine amino acid derivatives of formula (IV), wherein Y is chosen from -POy 2- with y equal to 2 or 3 and esters thereof, -SOZ - with z equal to 2 or 3 and esters thereof, a carbohydrate or carbohydrate derivatives; and; wherein X1 and/or X2 is selected from -N3, -NO2, -CI, or -CN, -SCN, a C1 to C8 alkyl, or H, wherein either X1 or X2 is not H
