    A prospective study of distal 1/3rd tibia fracture treated using locking compression plate by minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis technique

    Background: Distal tibia fractures are common and represent 6-8% of all lower limb fractures treated by an orthopaedic surgeon. Anatomical reduction with good fracture stability and minimal soft tissue dissection give good functional results. Locking compression plate combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) technique has yielded good results. In this prospective study, authors studied 30 patients treated with LCP using MIPPO technique to know the functional outcome.Methods: A total 30 patients were studied in this technique, which include both male and females of different age groups treated with LCP using MIPPO technique. All the patients were followed up for 12 months between March 2018 to March 2019 in orthopaedic department. The functional and radiological outcomes were assessed.Results: A total 30 patients both male and females were studied with age groups between 18 to 65 years. Average follow-up was 12 months using Olerud and Molander scoring system authors had excellent results in 16 patients (54%), good in 9 patients (30%), fair in 4 patients (12%) and poor outcome in 1 patient (4%).Conclusions: Surgery with locking compression plate along active physiotherapy proved to be better for distal tibia fractures

    ZIGBEE Protocol Based Low Power Health Care Monitoring System

    ZigBee based health care system was a health care monitoring system which mainly measures the physical conditions of the patient. It was based on an LR-WPAN ad-hoc network known as ZigBee”. It was mainly utilized for the implementation of health care system with less cost and low Power usage. The key feature of this paper is that it less energy consumption, optimum bandwidth maintenance and appreciable compatible to the preexisting and newer technologies. This work is implementated in both hardware and software and it was compiled and simulated using MPLAB and Proteus simulation software

    A case report of recalcitrant non union humerus treated with on lay fibular bone grafting and locking compression plate

    Nonunion of diaphyseal fractures of the humerus are frequently seen in clinical practice (incidence of up to 15% in certain studies) and osteosynthesis using dynamic compression plates, intra medullary nails and Ilizarov fixators have been reported previously. Locking compression plates (LCP) are useful in the presence of disuse osteoporosis, segmental bone loss and cortical defects that preclude strong fixation. Fixation using a compression plate and a non-vascularised fibular graft achieves good outcome for infected non-union of the humerus despite prior multiple failed surgeries. We report a failed case of fracture shaft humerus which was operated three times, first with DCP and next two times with DCP and autologous cancellous bone graft from iliac crest. The patient is now treated with LCP and on lay fibular bone grafting

    SOLUBILITY ENHANCEMENT OF NORFLOXACIN BY HYDROTROPY TECHNIQUE

    The objective of this study is to improve the solubility of poorly water soluble anti-bacterial drug Norfloxacin by hydrotropic solubilization technique. For the present study sodium benzoate was used as hydrotropic agent. By using this hydrotropic agent as water soluble carrier, hydrotropic solid dispersions of Norfloxacin were prepared.in 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 ratios (drug: hydrotropic agent). Equilibrium solubilization of pure drug and hydrotropic solid dispersions of Norfloxacin in distilled water by excess solute method and solubility enhancement ratios were calculated by measuring the absorbance of the solutions at 274.80 nm using UV spectrophotometer. The hydrotropic agent did not interfere in analysis. The results showed that there was an increase in the solubility of Norfloxacin with hydrotropic solid dispersions compared to pure drug in distilled water. There was 9.56 fold enhancement in aqueous solubility of Norfloxacin with hydrotropic solid dispersion of 1:4 ratio compared to 1:1 (6.29), 1:2 (7.09) and 1:3 (8.59) ratios

    Kitaev interactions between j=1/2 moments in honeycomb Na2IrO3 are large and ferromagnetic: insights from ab initio quantum chemistry calculations

    Na2_2IrO3_3, a honeycomb 5d5d^5 oxide, has been recently identified as a potential realization of the Kitaev spin lattice. The basic feature of this spin model is that for each of the three metal-metal links emerging out of a metal site, the Kitaev interaction connects only spin components perpendicular to the plaquette defined by the magnetic ions and two bridging ligands. The fact that reciprocally orthogonal spin components are coupled along the three different links leads to strong frustration effects and nontrivial physics. While the experiments indicate zigzag antiferromagnetic order in Na2_2IrO3_3, the signs and relative strengths of the Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions are still under debate. Herein we report results of ab initio many-body electronic structure calculations and establish that the nearest-neighbor exchange is strongly anisotropic with a dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev part, whereas the Heisenberg contribution is significantly weaker and antiferromagnetic. The calculations further reveal a strong sensitivity to tiny structural details such as the bond angles. In addition to the large spin-orbit interactions, this strong dependence on distortions of the Ir2_2O2_2 plaquettes singles out the honeycomb 5d5d^5 oxides as a new playground for the realization of unconventional magnetic ground states and excitations in extended systems.Comment: 13 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures, accepted in NJ

    Prevalence of cricket-related musculoskeletal pain among Indian junior club cricketers

    Background: Cricket is the most commonly played sport in India. The number of children playing cricket are increasing. There is growing evidence that injury rates in junior cricketers are higher than professional cricketers. In India at the community level, there are no standardized specific cricket injury prevention programmes (CIPP) which reduce injury risk. Minimal data is available from Asian countries, especially on junior cricketers. Our study is an attempt to focus on junior club cricketer injuries, plan safety precautions and emphasize role of CIPP.Methods: It was an observational study conducted on male junior club cricketers in the age group of 8-16 years. Based on a self-reported questionnaire, player’s physical status, training, injuries and their nature are assessed over a period of 12 months.Results: Over the study period 36 of 50 cricketers were symptomatic. The lower limb is the most frequently injured. Most common etiology is overuse. We found that the players are not following pre-training warm-up and post-training cool-down.Conclusions: CIPP should be implemented and strictly followed from the early stages of sports life. Pre-training warm-up and post-training cool-down should be included in their routine training. Overuse i.e. playing overtime and ignoring the pain during practice or match should be avoided. A supervised training and regular screening of players by orthopaedician or sports physician will keep them fit to play with full potential

    Origin of magnetic interactions and their influence on the structural properties of Ni2MnGa and related compounds

    In this work, we perform first principles DFT calculations to investigate the interplay between magnetic and structural properties in Ni2MnGa. We demonstrate that the relative stability of austenite (cubic) and non-modulated martensite (tetragonal) phases depends critically on the magnetic interactions between Mn atoms. While standard approximate DFT functionals stabilize the latter phase, a more accurate treatment of electronic localization and magnetism, obtained with DFT+U, suppresses the non-modulated tetragonal structure for the stoichiometric compound, in better agreement with the experiments. We show that the Anderson impurity model, with Mn atoms treated as magnetic impurities, can explain this observation and that the fine balance between super-exchange RKKY type interactions mediated by Ni d and Ga p orbitals determines the equilibrium structure of the crystal. The Anderson model is also demonstrated to capture the effect of the number of valence electrons per unit cell on the structural properties, often used as an empirical parameter to tune the behavior of Ni2MnGa based alloys. Finally, we show that off-stoichiometric compositions with excess Mn promote transitions to a non-modulated tetragonal structure, in agreement with experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 25 figure

    Evaluation on the development of soil fertility gradients with nutrient exhaustive crop (Sorghum bicolor) regard to N, P, and K in Inceptisols in semi-arid regions of Tamil Nadu

    Soil test crop response (STCR's) soil fertility gradient approach is based on the idea that  complex treatments are superimposed in a field to obtain crop responses for correlating with soil test values that are artificially created by differential fertiliser treatments prior to conducting the regular experiment, thereby providing a scientific basis for balanced fertilisation between applied and available forms of nutrients. The present study aimed to develop the fertility gradient with sorghum as test crop in the field concerning N, P, and K and also to evaluate its impact on sorghum nutrient uptake, and soil fertility. The experimental field was split into three equal strips. Strips I, II, and III each received three graded levels of fertiliser N (nitrogen), P2O5 (phosphorus pentoxide), and K2O (potassium oxide) as urea, single super phosphate, and muriate of potash, respectively. The green fodder yield of sorghum recorded at harvest in strip I, II & III was 16.4, 23.4 and 28.2 t ha-1, respectively. Whereas post-harvest soil available nitrogen in strip I, II & III was 155, 190 & 214 kg ha-1 respectively, for available phosphorus 12.5, 23.2 & 31.8 kg ha-1 respectively and for available potassium it is 332, 370 & 396 kg ha-1 respectively. Wide variations in green fodder yield and soil fertility were observed among the strips, establishing the influence of graded amounts of fertiliser treatment on these parameters and the formation of a soil fertility gradient
