    Context in 3D planar navigation

    Get PDF
One of the most frustrating barriers to the widespread use of 3D visualisation is the additional complexity in navigating 3D data. This paper details a new approach to improving navigation in 3D environments where the navigation is mainly planar. Data at a distance from the viewpoint is distorted as if projected onto a partial cylinder to approximate a plan view, thereby exposing information that may have been obscured. Previous approaches are compared with this new technique and screenshots presented. Implementation details of the technique are discussed as well as possible performance and useability issues

Expanding the conversational terrain: Using a choice experiment to assess community preferences for post-disaster redevelopment options

The Canterbury region of New Zealand was shaken by major earthquakes on the 4th September 2010 and 22nd February 2011. The quakes caused 185 fatalities and extensive land, infrastructure and building damage, particularly in the Eastern suburbs of Christchurch city. Almost 450 ha of residential and public land was designated as a ā€˜Red Zoneā€™ unsuitable for residential redevelopment because land damage was so significant, engineering solutions were uncertain, and repairs would be protracted. Subsequent demolition of all housing and infrastructure in the area has left a blank canvas of land stretching along the Avon River corridor from the CBD to the sea. Initially the Governmentā€™s official ā€“ but enormously controversial ā€“ position was that this land would be cleared and lie fallow until engineering solutions could be found that enabled residential redevelopment. This paper presents an application of a choice experiment (CE) that identified and assessed Christchurch residentsā€™ preferences for different land use options of this Red Zone. Results demonstrated strong public support for the development of a recreational reserve comprising a unique natural environment with native fauna and flora, healthy wetlands and rivers, and recreational opportunities that align with this vision. By highlighting the value of a range of alternatives, the CE provided a platform for public participation and expanded the conversational terrain upon which redevelopment policy took place. We conclude the method has value for land use decision-making beyond the disaster recovery context

Time-resolved multi-mass ion imaging: femtosecond UV-VUV pump-probe spectroscopy with the PImMS camera

The Pixel-Imaging Mass Spectrometry (PImMS) camera allows for 3D charged particle imaging measurements, in which the particle time-of-flight is recorded along with (x,y)(x,y) position. Coupling the PImMS camera to an ultrafast pump-probe velocity-map imaging spectroscopy apparatus therefore provides a route to time-resolved multi-mass ion imaging, with both high count rates and large dynamic range, thus allowing for rapid measurements of complex photofragmentation dynamics. Furthermore, the use of vacuum ultraviolet wavelengths for the probe pulse allows for an enhanced observation window for the study of excited state molecular dynamics in small polyatomic molecules having relatively high ionization potentials. Herein, preliminary time-resolved multi-mass imaging results from C2_2F3_3I photolysis are presented. The experiments utilized femtosecond UV and VUV (160.8~nm and 267~nm) pump and probe laser pulses in order to demonstrate and explore this new time-resolved experimental ion imaging configuration. The data indicates the depth and power of this measurement modality, with a range of photofragments readily observed, and many indications of complex underlying wavepacket dynamics on the excited state(s) prepared

    Entrepreneurial search dynamics: reflection paper

    Get PDF
The intended objectives of Smartspec Work Package 1 are firstly to identify related variety and value chain components within EU regions to inform specialisation choices and secondly, to identify the role of organisations and their interaction for the development of entrepreneurial discovery and to assess the role of network connectivity in facilitating intra- and extra-regional asset combination. In order to examine the various questions regarding the network and institutional factors enhancing or mitigating entrepreneurial search processes, in this work package we employ a twin-track multimethodology approach comprised of two parallel streams of enquiry, one of which is primarily empirical and quantitative in nature, and one of which is rather more conceptual and qualitative in nature. Each of these parallel streams of work is designed to progress and develop alongside the other, with various junctures built into the programme for mutual reflection and cross-fertilisation of ideas

Learning spaces, tasks and metrics for effective communication in Second Life within the context of programming LEGO NXT Mindstormsā„¢ robots: towards a framework for design and implementation

    Get PDF
Science education is concerned with the meaningful pursuit of comprehension, knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes. In Vygotskian socialā€constructivist learning, personal interpretation, decision-making and community cooperation fosters longā€term understanding and transference of learned concepts. In short, the construction of knowledge requires learners to be actively involved in the process of learning. For effective science learning, an instructorā€™s pedagogical approach must be anchored in meaningful contexts so that students experience science. This paper presents a discussion of the method that has been applied to assessing and defining effective measurements for evaluating strategies for communicating science using LEGO robots and a Mindstormsā„¢ RCX controller collaboratively constructed and programmed by students using a virtual technology (Second Life) whilst physically situated in different locations
