Effects of Strip-cropping on Small Mammal Population Dynamics in Soybean Agroecosystems
Author Institution: Department of Zoology, Miami UniversityThe present study examined the effects of strip-cropping and harvesting practices on small mammal population dynamics in soybean agroecosystems. Small mammals were live-trapped in four treatments (three replicates each): soybean monoculture, soybean-clover, soybean-buckwheat, and soybean-corn. Peromyscus maniculatus was found in all four treatment types, whereas Mus musculus resided mainly in the soybean-corn treatment. Peromyscus population densities were significantly greater in the soybean monoculture during the week preceding harvest than in the soybean-clover strip-cropped treatment. Peromyscus population densities immediately increased following harvesting practices, then declined. Short-term changes in density were attributed to seed accessibility; long-term changes appeared to be in response to reduced crop cover resulting in increased predation. Populations of Mus were unaffected by harvest practices. Interestingly, more Peromyscus dispersed from strip-cropped treatments than from the monoculture (control) treatment. Female deer mice were found to have larger mean home ranges in the corn strip-cropped treatment than in the monoculture or buckwheat strip-cropped treatment suggesting an impact of spatial resource patterning on small mammal population dynamics
Continuous infusion of an agonist of the tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 in the spinal cord improves recovery after traumatic contusive injury.
AimThe activation of the TNFR2 receptor is beneficial in several pathologies of the central nervous system, and this study examines whether it can ameliorate the recovery process following spinal cord injury.MethodsEHD2-sc-mTNFR2 , an agonist specific for TNFR2, was used to treat neurons exposed to high levels of glutamate in vitro. In vivo, it was infused directly to the spinal cord via osmotic pumps immediately after a contusion to the cord at the T9 level. Locomotion behavior was assessed for 6Â weeks, and the tissue was analyzed (lesion size, RNA and protein expression, cell death) after injury. Somatosensory evoked potentials were also measured in response to hindlimb stimulation.ResultsThe activation of TNFR2 protected neurons from glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity through the activation of phosphoinositide-3 kinase gamma in vitro and improved the locomotion of animals following spinal cord injury. The extent of the injury was not affected by infusing EHD2-sc-mTNFR2 , but higher levels of neurofilament H and 2', 3'-cyclic-nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase were observed 6Â weeks after the injury. Finally, the activation of TNFR2 after injury increased the neural response recorded in the cortex following hindlimb stimulation.ConclusionThe activation of TNFR2 in the spinal cord following contusive injury leads to enhanced locomotion and better cortical responses to hindlimb stimulation
Implementation Challenges in Wrapping Interventions Around Families Living with Parental Mental Illness
Summary: Parental mental illness challenges service providers in adult mental health, child welfare and children’s mental health systems of care. This presentation describes the development and implementation of Family Options, a family-centered, strengths-based, family-driven intervention for families living with parental mental illness. Findings from the Family Options implementation study suggest strategies for the replication of the intervention, as well as recommendations for the enhancement of existing programs like children’s systems of care to meet parents’ needs and improve outcomes for all family members
Identification of the Infrared Counterpart to a Newly Discovered X-ray Source in the Galactic Center
We present first results of a campaign to find and identify new compact
objects in the Galactic Center. Selecting candidates from a combination of
Chandra and 2MASS survey data, we search for accretion disk signatures via
infrared spectroscopy. We have found the infrared counterpart to the Chandra
source CXO J174536.1-285638, the spectrum of which has strong Br-gamma and HeI
emission. The presence of CIII, NIII, and HeII indicate a binary system. We
suspect that the system is some form of high-mass binary system, either a

New Perspectives on Ecological Mechanisms Affecting Coral Recruitment on Reefs
Coral mortality has increased in recent decades, making coral recruitment more important than ever in sustaining coral reef ecosystems and contributing to their resilience. This review summarizes existing information on ecological factors affecting scleractinian coral recruitment. Successful recruitment requires the survival of coral offspring through sequential life history stages. Larval availability, successful settlement, and post-settlement survival and growth are all necessary for the addition of new coral individuals to a reef and ultimately maintenance or recovery of coral reef ecosystems. As environmental conditions continue to become more hostile to corals on a global scale, further research on fertilization ecology, connectivity, larval condition, positive and negative cues influencing substrate selection, and post-settlement ecology will be critical to our ability to manage these diverse ecosystems for recovery. A better understanding of the ecological factors infl uencing coral recruitment is fundamental to coral reef ecology and management

Success in this role, particularly for women with mental health disorders, would seem to be intimately related to mental health promotion, the recovery process, and successful functioning in other major life domains (e.g., employment, community living, and personal health and well-being).
