A N-D VIRTUAL NOTEBOOK ABOUT THE BASILICA OF S. AMBROGIO IN MILAN: INFORMATION MODELING FOR THE COMMUNICATION OF HISTORICAL PHASES SUBTRACTION PROCESS
This essay describes the combination of 3D solutions and software techniques with traditional studies and researches in order to
achieve an integrated digital documentation between performed surveys, collected data, and historical research. The approach of this
study is based on the comparison of survey data with historical research, and interpretations deduced from a data cross-check
between the two mentioned sources. The case study is the Basilica of S. Ambrogio in Milan, one of the greatest monuments in the
city, a pillar of the Christianity and of the History of Architecture. It is characterized by a complex stratification of phases of
restoration and transformation. Rediscovering the great richness of the traditional architectural notebook, which collected surveys
and data, this research aims to realize a virtual notebook, based on a 3D model that supports the dissemination of the collected
information. It can potentially be understandable and accessible by anyone through the development of a mobile app. The 3D model
was used to explore the different historical phases, starting from the recent layers to the oldest ones, through a virtual subtraction
process, following the methods of Archaeology of Architecture. Its components can be imported into parametric software and
recognized both in their morphological and typological aspects. It is based on the concept of LoD and ReverseLoD in order to fit the
accuracy required by each step of the research
The PPAR-γ Agonist Pioglitazone Modulates Proliferation and Migration in HUVEC, HAOSMC and Human Arteriovenous Fistula-Derived Cells
The failure of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) following intimal hyperplasia (IH) increases morbidity and mortality rates in patients undergoing hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease. The peroxisome-proliferator associated receptor (PPAR-γ) may be a therapeutic target in IH regulation. In the present study, we investigated PPAR-γ expression and tested the effect of pioglitazone, a PPAR-γ agonist, in different cell types involved in IH. As cell models, we used Human Endothelial Umbilical Vein Cells (HUVEC), Human Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (HAOSMC), and AVF cells (AVFCs) isolated from (i) normal veins collected at the first AVF establishment (T0), and (ii) failed AVF with IH (T1). PPAR-γ was downregulated in AVF T1 tissues and cells, in comparison to T0 group. HUVEC, HAOSMC, and AVFC (T0 and T1) proliferation and migration were analyzed after pioglitazone administration, alone or in combination with the PPAR-γ inhibitor, GW9662. Pioglitazone negatively regulated HUVEC and HAOSMC proliferation and migration. The effect was antagonized by GW9662. These data were confirmed in AVFCs T1, where pioglitazone induced PPAR- γ expression and downregulated the invasive genes SLUG, MMP-9, and VIMENTIN. In summary, PPAR-γ modulation may represent a promising strategy to reduce the AVF failure risk by modulating cell proliferation and migration
TWNK in Parkinson's Disease: A Movement Disorder and Mitochondrial Disease Center Perspective Study
Background: Parkinsonian features have been described in patients harboring variants in nuclear genes encoding for proteins involved in mitochondrial DNA maintenance, such as TWNK. Objectives: The aim was to screen for TWNK variants in an Italian cohort of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and to assess the occurrence of parkinsonism in patients presenting with TWNK-related autosomal dominant progressive external ophthalmoplegia (TWNK-adPEO). Methods: Genomic DNA of 263 consecutively collected PD patients who underwent diagnostic genetic testing was analyzed with a targeted custom gene panel including TWNK, as well as genes causative of monogenic PD. Genetic and clinical data of 18 TWNK-adPEO patients with parkinsonism were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Six of 263 PD patients (2%), presenting either with isolated PD (n = 4) or in combination with bilateral ptosis (n = 2), carried TWNK likely pathogenic variants. Among 18 TWNK-adPEO patients, 5 (28%) had parkinsonism. Conclusions: We show candidate TWNK variants occurring in PD without PEO. This finding will require further confirmatory studies. © 2022 Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico. This report, based on the Dark Sectors workshop at SLAC in April 2016,
summarizes the scientific importance of searches for dark sector dark matter
and forces at masses beneath the weak-scale, the status of this broad
international field, the important milestones motivating future exploration,
and promising experimental opportunities to reach these milestones over the
next 5-10 years

Laser ablation is superior to TACE in large-sized hepatocellular carcinoma: A pilot case-control study
Background:Limited therapies are available for large ( 6540 mm) unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Currently, the standard treatment with transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is unsatisfactory with high recurrence rate and limited effect on survival. Laser Ablation (LA) has emerged as a relatively new technique characterized by high efficacy and good safety. This study is aimed to evaluate the efficacy of LA in comparison to TACE in patients with large HCC. Methods: Eighty-two patients with a single HCC nodule 6540 mm (BCLC stage A or B) were enrolled in this case-control study. Forty-one patients were treated with LA and 41 patients were treated with TACE. Response to therapy was evaluated according to the mRECIST criteria. Survival was calculated with Kaplan-Meier from the time of cancer diagnosis to death with values censored at the date of the last follow-up. Results: Twenty-six (63.4%) and 8 (19.5%) patients had a complete response after LA and TACE, respectively (p < 0.001). Subsequently we stratified the HCCs in 3 categories according to the nodule size: 40-50 mm, 51-60 mm, and > 60 mm. LA resulted superior to TACE especially in nodules ranging between 51 and 60 mm in diameter, with a complete response rate post-LA and post-TACE of 75% and 14.3%, respectively (p = 0.0133). The 36 months cumulative survival rate in patients treated with LA and TACE was 55.4% and 48.8%, respectively. The disease recurrence rates after LA and TACE were 19.5% and 75.0%, respectively. Conclusions: LA is a more effective therapeutic option than TACE in patients with solitary large HCC
Towards a Muon Collider
A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is
needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges
of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass
energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon
Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent
advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to
provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future
work.Comment: 118 pages, 103 figure
