    The IL1B-511 Polymorphism (rs16944 AA Genotype) Is Increased in Aspirin-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease in Mexican Population

    Aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is characterized by chronic hyperplastic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis, asthma, and aspirin sensitivity. The mechanisms which produce these manifestations of intolerance are not fully defined, current research focuses on cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) inhibition, metabolism of arachidonic acid, and the COX pathway to the lipoxygenase (LO) route, inducing increased synthesis of leukotrienes (LT). The biological plausibility of this model has led to the search for polymorphisms in genes responsible for proinflammatory cytokines synthesis, such as IL1B and IL8. We performed a genetic association study between IL8-251 (rs4073) and IL1B-511 (rs16944) polymorphisms in AERD, aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA), and healthy control subjects. Using allelic discrimination by real-time PCR, we found statistically nonsignificant associations between AERD, ATA, and healthy control subjects for the GG and GA genotypes of IL1B (rs16944). Interestingly, the AA genotype showed an increased frequency in the AERD patients versus the ATA group (GF = 0.19 versus 0.07, p = 0.018, OR 2.98, and 95% CI 1.17–7.82). This is the first observation that IL1B polymorphisms are involved in AERD. Thus, future studies must investigate whether interleukin-1β is released in the airways of AERD patients and whether it relates to genetic polymorphisms in the IL1B gene

    There is an increase in the prevalence of asthma and obesity, constituting a public health problem at national and global levels. The association between the two pathologies has not been clearly determined; however, a certain synergy has been proposed, which leads to more severe bronchospasms, longer recovery time, and more prolonged use of medications in obese asthmatic patients. The discovery of leptin, an adipokine that is directly related to the amount of total body fat and the production of proinflammatory cytokines, has generated greater interest in white adipose tissue. Our objective was to describe the possible mechanisms involved and the association between obesity and asthma. A bibliographic search was conducted in the scientific literature using the National Biotechnology Information Center (NCBI) database of the USA as a search tool; keywords used were: asthma, leptin, obesity and inflammation. There are numerous clinical and experimental studies that explore the role of obesity as an inflammatory entity in asthma, some of which have evaluated the role of “shared” genetic polymorphisms in both pathologies. Apparently, the interaction between asthma and obesity is complex, there are mechanisms that link both pathologies, these can influence the improvement or exacerbation of symptoms

    Acarofauna en papaya var. Maradol (Carica papaya L.) en el estado de Yucatán, México

    Se colectaron ácaros asociados a papayo Maradol en 20 huertas en el estado de Yucatán, México. Para separar los ácaros, las muestras se procesaron por lavado y tamizado. Se identificó a los ácaros fitófagos Tetranychus merganser, Eutetranychus banksi (Tetranychidae ambos), Calacarus citrifolii (Eriophyidae) y Daidalotarsonemus sp. (Tarsonemidae), así como a los depredadores Amblyseius sp., Chelaseius sp. y Galendromus helveolus (Phytoseiidae todos). Se define a T. merganser como el ácaro plaga más dañino para el papayo en Yucatán porque fue la especie que alcanzó las poblaciones más elevadas, y a E. banksi y a C. citrifolii como plagas de menor importancia. No se encontraron indicios de alguna enfermedad similar a la mancha concéntrica de los cítricos en papayo. Los fitoseídos se encontraron en números muy reducidos, por lo que se supone que no están ejerciendo un papel importante como enemigos naturales de los ácaros fitófagos en papayo

    Cervical cancer is the second most frequent tumor type in women worldwide with cases developing clinical recurrence, metastasis, and chemoresistance. The cancer stem cells (CSC) may be implicated in tumor resistance to therapy. RESveratrol (RES), a natural compound, is an antioxidant with multiple beneficial activities. We previously determined that the expression of RAD51 is decreased by RES. The aim of our study was to examine molecular mechanism by which CSC from HeLa cultures exhibit chemoresistance. We hypothesized CSC repair more efficiently DNA breaks and that RAD51 plays an important role in this mechanism. We found that CSC, derived from cervical cancer cell lines, overexpress RAD51 and are less sensitive to Etoposide (VP16). We inhibited RAD51 in CSC-enriched cultures using RES or siRNA against RAD51 messenger RNA and observed a decrease in cell viability and induction of apoptosis when treated simultaneously with VP16. In addition, we found that inhibition of RAD51 expression using RES also sensitizes CSC to VP16 treatment. Our results suggest that resveratrol is effective to sensitize cervical CSC because of RAD51 inhibition, targeting high RAD51 expressing CD49f-positive cells, which supports the possible therapeutic application of RES as a novel agent to treat cancer
