The Historiographical Representation of Spanish Naval Warfare during the Long xviiith Century: Tactical and Strategic Thought, Historical Navalism and Naval Historiography in the xxist Century
The subject of the present essay is the historiographical representation of Spanish naval warfare in the long xviiith century, based the theoretical separation of the concept of «strategy» from the previous, wider concept of «tactics». It aims at showing the origins of Spanish late xviiith‑century definition of «naval strategy», conceived as a scientific method for the planning of naval operations based on the study of history. It also traces the influence of strategic studies in Spanish naval historiography during the xixth and xxth centuries as well as its connection with the international development of military and naval historiography during the xxist century.
Resource Mobilization for Spanish Naval shipbuilding in the South Pacific: New Spain, Philippines, India and Cambodia (sixteenth to seventeenth centuries)
The purpose of ths article is to understand the functioning of the Spanish shipbuilding industry in South East Asia, from the perspective of the exploitation of timber resources and indigenous labour. It also aims at understanding the causes of the transfer of this industry from the Pacific coasts of New Spain, where it was based during most of the sixteenth century, to the Philippine islands and, later on, to other regions of South East Asia. It describes the administrative stucture of the Spanish settlment in the Philippine islands from the perspective of the administration of its human and timber resuources, as well as its the relationship of the shipbuilding industry with the projects for further Spanish expansion into China, Cambodia and Siam.

Abstract The purpose of the present article is to outline the industrial policies developed by the Spanish Monarchy for the production of warships during the long Eighteenth century (1670-1834), in Spain, America and the Philippines. Its main hypothesis is that an important element to complete our understanding of the administrative systems of Spanish naval shipbuilding is the relationship between the State, the entrepreneurs dedicated to this aspect of the armaments industry, and the specialised workforce recruited through the registry of maritime professions known as Matrícula de Mar. This line of argumentation intersects with the historiographical debate dedicated to understand the State-building process of imperial Spain through the two main administrative methods employed in its armaments industries (private contracting and direct state administration). The Matrícula de Mar allowed the Spanish crown to create new militarised corporations of shipbuilding workers and, from the last third of the Eighteenth century it followed a consistent policy of concentrating the shipbuilding contracts on small-scale entrepreneurs belonging to these corporations. This had important implications for the meaning of the alternative between private contracting and direct state administration. The article also details the peculiarities of shipbuilding administration in Spanish America and Asia, through the expansion of the Matrícula de Mar. AbstractThe purpose of the present article is to outline the industrial policies developed by the Spanish Monarchy for the production of warships during the long Eighteenth century (1670-1834), in Spain, America and the Philippines.
The main intention of this paper is to make a first synthesis of the data concerning
the conception of the war between the fifteenth century Purépechas. This synthesis
is based on the contrast found in archaeological data, primarily from mortuary
contexts, and ethnohistoric contained in chronicles, dictionaries and pictures. Therefore the symbolism of weapons, the role of war and the sacrifices will be
addressed, as well as the tactical aspects and technology. From all these data it is
concluded that most of the strategies were not aimed at killing the enemy on the
battlefield but their subjugation and subsequent death on the sacrificial stone. To
sum up, the final section is an attempt to understand the war not only as a means
to feed the deities, but also as a predatory mechanism for exchanging life forces
