The influence of massive stars in the interstellar medium of IC 1613: the supernova remnant S8 and the nebula S3 associated with a WO star
We present a detailed kinematical analysis of two selected nebulae in the
Local Group irregular galaxy IC 1613. The nebulae are: S8, the only known
supernova remnant in this galaxy, and S3, a Wolf-Rayet nebula associated with
the only WO star in this galaxy. For S8, we have obtained and analyzed its
radial velocity field, where we found complex profiles which can be fitted by
several velocity components. These profiles also show the presence of high
velocity, low density gas. From this, we have obtained the expansion velocity,
estimated the preshock density and calculated the basic kinematical parameters
of this SNR. We suggest that in S8 we are seing a SNR partially hidden by dust.
This suggestion comes from the fact that the SNR is located between two
superbubbles where a ridge of obscured material unveils the existence of dust.
Moreover, we show that this hypothesis prevails when energetic arguments are
taken into account. In the case of S3, this nebula shows bipolar structure. By
means of its kinematics, we have analyzed its two lobes, the ``waist'', as well
as its relation with the nearest superbubbles. For the first time we are able
to see closed the NW lobe, showing a clover leaf shape. This fact allows a
better quantitative knowledge of the nebula as a whole. Furthermore, we found
evidence of an expansion motion in the NW lobe. In the light of our results, we
can express that these nebulae are the product of very massive stellar
evolution. It is surprising the influence these stars still have in shaping
their surrounding gas, and on the energy liberation towards the interstellar

Living on the Edge: High-Latitude Porites Carbonate Production Under Temperate Eutrophic Conditions
Non-framework building high-latitude coral communities have recently received increased attention as a result of their potential to act as refugia during global change, as proxies for such change and for testing the environmental tolerance limits of various species of coral. In this study, we report on high-resolution in situ measured environmental factors influencing the development of monospecific (Porites panamensis) non-framework building coral communities and the resulting coral-derived carbonate sediment production in the northern Gulf of California, Mexico (BahĂa de Los Angeles, 29°N, 113°E). Half-hourly measurements of temperature and chlorophyll a (a nutrient proxy) for a 1-year period indicate temperature extremes ranging from 14°C to 30°C, and average chlorophyll a values of 2.2 mg Chl a/m3(eutrophic). Even though P. panamensis only occur as small massive and encrusting colonies, they nonetheless show a significant carbonate sediment production potential (0.14 kg CaCO3/m2/year). A calculation of carbonate production rates vs amount of coral found in the sediment shows that this high-latitude community must have persisted for an extended period of time
The color of smiling: computational synaesthesia of facial expressions
This note gives a preliminary account of the transcoding or rechanneling
problem between different stimuli as it is of interest for the natural
interaction or affective computing fields. By the consideration of a simple
example, namely the color response of an affective lamp to a sensed facial
expression, we frame the problem within an information- theoretic perspective.
A full justification in terms of the Information Bottleneck principle promotes
a latent affective space, hitherto surmised as an appealing and intuitive

Development of a Semi-Field System for Contained Field Trials With Aedes Aegypti in Southern Mexico
Development of new genetic approaches to either interfere with the ability of mosquitoes to transmit dengue virus or to reduce vector population density requires progressive evaluation from the laboratory to contained field trials, before open field release. Trials in contained outdoor facilities are an important part of this process because they can be used to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of modified strains in settings that include natural environmental variations without releasing mosquitoes into the open field. We describe a simple and cost-effective semi-field system designed to study Aedes aegypti carrying a dominant lethal gene (fsRIDL) in semi-field conditions. We provide a protocol for establishing, maintaining, and monitoring stable Ae. aegypti population densities inside field cages
Observations of Stellar Objects at a Shell Boundary in the Star-Forming Complex in the Galaxy IC1613
The single region of ongoing star formation in the galaxy IC 1613 has been
observed in order to reveal the nature of compact emission-line objects at the
edges of two shells in the complex, identified earlier in H-alpha line images.
The continuum images show these compact objects to be stars. Detailed
spectroscopic observations of these stars and the surrounding nebulae were
carried out with an integral field spectrograph MPFS mounted on the 6m
telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory. The resulting stellar
spectra were used to determine the spectral types and luminosity classes of the
objects. An Of star we identified is the only object of this spectral type in
IC 1613. The results of optical observations of the multi-shell complex are
compared to 21cm radio observations. The shells harboring the stars at their
boundaries constitute the most active part of the star-forming region. There is
evidence that shocks have played an important role in the formation of the
