    In-vitro demonstration of cell-mediated immunity to vaccinia virus in man

    Cell mediated immunity to vaccinia virus in man was studied by lymphocyte transformation. Vaccinia antigen, propagated on BHK-21 and Vero cells, could be used successfully for in-vitro testing after partial purification as well as crude infectious homogenates. Vaccinia antigen preparations were effective both in the infective and the inactivated state. Inactivation was usually accompanied with a certain loss of stimulating activity. Development of cell mediated immune response in-vitro after first vaccination was investigated in 17 adults. Vaccinia virus specific lymphocyte transformation was seen in the second week after vaccination in all cases. Following revaccination no increase of lymphocyte transformation ratio could be observed in 11 persons studied. At the same time the titers of humoral antibodies were elevated

    Spin and energy transfer in nanocrystals without transport of charge

    We describe a mechanism of spin transfer between individual quantum dots that does not require tunneling. Incident circularly-polarized photons create inter-band excitons with non-zero electron spin in the first quantum dot. When the quantum-dot pair is properly designed, this excitation can be transferred to the neighboring dot via the Coulomb interaction with either {\it conservation} or {\it flipping} of the electron spin. The second dot can radiate circularly-polarized photons at lower energy. Selection rules for spin transfer are determined by the resonant conditions and by the strong spin-orbit interaction in the valence band of nanocrystals. Coulomb-induced energy and spin transfer in pairs and chains of dots can become very efficient under resonant conditions. The electron can preserve its spin orientation even in randomly-oriented nanocrystals.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Machine Learning in Tremor Analysis: Critique and Directions

    Tremor is the most frequent human movement disorder, and its diagnosis is based on clinical assessment. Yet finding the accurate clinical diagnosis is not always straightforward. Fine-tuning of clinical diagnostic criteria over the past few decades, as well as device-based qualitative analysis, has resulted in incremental improvements to diagnostic accuracy. Accelerometric assessments are commonplace, enabling clinicians to capture high-resolution oscillatory properties of tremor, which recently have been the focus of various machine-learning (ML) studies. In this context, the application of ML models to accelerometric recordings provides the potential for less-biased classification and quantification of tremor disorders. However, if implemented incorrectly, ML can result in spurious or nongeneralizable results and misguided conclusions. This work summarizes and highlights recent developments in ML tools for tremor research, with a focus on supervised ML. We aim to highlight the opportunities and limitations of such approaches and provide future directions while simultaneously guiding the reader through the process of applying ML to analyze tremor data. We identify the need for the movement disorder community to take a more proactive role in the application of these novel analytical technologies, which so far have been predominantly pursued by the engineering and data analysis field. Ultimately, big-data approaches offer the possibility to identify generalizable patterns but warrant meaningful translation into clinical practice. © 2023 The Authors.     Preclinical/subclinical rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease: misleading terms with potentially deleterious consequences

    Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a leading cause of mortality in patients with rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. The 5-year mortality rate is twice as high in patients with rheumatoid arthritis-associated ILD than in patients with rheumatoid arthritis without ILD. Moreover, a report showed that mortality rates in patients with disease codes for rheumatoid arthritis-associated ILD remained unchanged from 2005–18, even though the overall rheumatoid arthritis mortality rate declined during this time period. Despite the evidence that ILD contributes to premature death in rheumatoid arthritis, screening for ILD in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is not routinely performed in clinical practice and numerous questions remain regarding the management of rheumatoid arthritis-associated ILD

    Financial phantasmagoria: corporate image-work in times of crisis

    Our purpose in this article is to relate the real movements in the economy during 2008 to the ?image-work? of financial institutions. Over the period January?December 2008 we collected 241 separate advertisements from 61 financial institutions published in the Financial Times. Reading across the ensemble of advertisements for themes and evocative images provides an impression of the financial imaginaries created by these organizations as the global financial crisis unfolded. In using the term ?phantasmagoria? we move beyond its colloquial sense of a set of strange images designed to dazzle towards the more technical connotation used by Ranci�re (2004) who suggested that words and images can offer a trace of an overall determining set-up if they are torn from their obviousness so they become phantasmagoric figures. The key phantasmagoric figure we identify here is that of the financial institution as timeless, immortal and unchanging; a coherent and autonomous entity amongst other actors. This notion of uniqueness belies the commonality of thinking which precipitated the global financial crisis as well as the limited capacity for control of financial institutions in relation to market events. It also functions as a powerful naturalizing force, making it hard to question certain aspects of the recent period of ?capitalism in crisis?
