The slimming effect of advection on black-hole accretion flows
At super-Eddington rates accretion flows onto black holes have been described
as slim (aspect ratio ) or thick (H/R >1) discs, also known as
tori or (Polish) doughnuts. The relation between the two descriptions has never
been established, but it was commonly believed that at sufficiently high
accretion rates slim discs inflate, becoming thick. We wish to establish under
what conditions slim accretion flows become thick. We use analytical equations,
numerical 1+1 schemes, and numerical radiative MHD codes to describe and
compare various accretion flow models at very high accretion rates.We find that
the dominant effect of advection at high accretion rates precludes slim discs
becoming thick. At super-Eddington rates accretion flows around black holes can

Optimization conditions of UV-C radiation combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction of cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) lycopene extract
The aim of this work was to study the effect of UV-C radiation on ultrasound assisted extraction
(UAE) of cherry tomato bioactive compounds. Cherry tomatoes were exposed to two UV-C radiation
doses (0.5 and 1.0 J cm−2
) and stored at 20 ± 0.5 oC for 7 days. Next, they were lyophilized, and
the bioactive compounds were extracted by UAE at 20 KHz. To evaluate the effectiveness of the
extraction process of the bioactive compounds, a CCRD (central composite rotational design) was
used together with RSM (response surface methodology), for extraction times from 4 to 12 minutes
and concentrations (g of lyophilized product / L of ethanol) of 1:10, 1:20 and 1:30. The extracts
obtained from the irradiated tomatoes presented 5.8 times more lycopene content than the controls
and higher antioxidant activity was obtained for 4 and 8 min, in the concentrations 1:10 and 1:20 (m
v−1). Through numerical model optimization, optimal extraction conditions were obtained. The results
demonstrated that by previously irradiating tomatoes with UV-C light, the UAE yielded considerably

Exponential Distributions in a Mechanical Model for Earthquakes
We study statistical distributions in a mechanical model for an earthquake
fault introduced by Burridge and Knopoff [R. Burridge and L. Knopoff, {\sl
Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am.} {\bf 57}, 341 (1967)]. Our investigations on the size
(moment), time duration and number of blocks involved in an event show that
exponential distributions are found in a given range of the paramenter space.
This occurs when the two kinds of springs present in the model have the same,
or approximately the same, value for the elastic constants. Exponential
distributions have also been seen recently in an experimental system to model
earthquake-like dynamics [M. A. Rubio and J. Galeano, {\sl Phys. Rev. E} {\bf

Effect of Static Disorder in an Electron Fabry-Perot Interferometer with Two Quantum Scattering Centers
In a recent paper -- F. Ciccarello \emph{et al.}, New J. Phys. \textbf{8},
214 (2006) -- we have demonstrated that the electron transmission properties of
a one-dimensional (1D) wire with two identical embedded spin-1/2 impurities can
be significantly affected by entanglement between the spins of the scattering
centers. Such effect is of particular interest in the control of transmission
of quantum information in nanostructures and can be used as a detection scheme
of maximally entangled states of two localized spins. In this letter, we relax
the constraint that the two magnetic impurities are equal and investigate how
the main results presented in the above paper are affected by a static disorder
in the exchange coupling constants of the impurities. Good robustness against
deviation from impurity symmetry is found for both the entanglement dependent
transmission and the maximally entangled states generation scheme.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
On the extra phase correction to the semiclassical spin coherent-state propagator
The problem of an origin of the Solary-Kochetov extra-phase contribution to
the naive semiclassical form of a generalized phase-space propagator is
addressed with the special reference to the su(2) spin case which is the most
important in applications. While the extra-phase correction to a flat
phase-space propagator can straightforwardly be shown to appear as a difference
between the principal and the Weyl symbols of a Hamiltonian in the
next-to-leading order expansion in the semiclassical parameter, the same
statement for the semiclassical spin coherent-state propagator holds provided
the Holstein-Primakoff representation of the su(2) algebra generators is

Astrometry of mutual approximations between natural satellites. Application to the Galilean moons
Typically we can deliver astrometric positions of natural satellites with
errors in the 50-150 mas range. Apparent distances from mutual phenomena, have
much smaller errors, less than 10 mas. However, this method can only be applied
during the equinox of the planets. We developed a method that can provide
accurate astrometric data for natural satellites -- the mutual approximations.
The method can be applied when any two satellites pass close by each other in
the apparent sky plane. The fundamental parameter is the central instant
of the passage when the distances reach a minimum.
We applied the method for the Galilean moons. All observations were made with
a 0.6 m telescope with a narrow-band filter centred at 889 nm with width of 15
nm which attenuated Jupiter's scattered light. We obtained central instants for
14 mutual approximations observed in 2014-2015. We determined with an
average precision of 3.42 mas (10.43 km). For comparison, we also applied the
method for 5 occultations in the 2009 mutual phenomena campaign and for 22
occultations in the 2014-2015 campaign. The comparisons of determined by
our method with the results from mutual phenomena show an agreement by less
than 1-sigma error in , typically less than 10 mas. This new method is

Fractal analysis of weld defect patterns obtained by radiographic tests
This paper presents a fractal analysis of radiographic patterns obtained from
specimens with three types of inserted welding defects: lack of fusion, lack of
penetration, and porosity. The study focused on patterns of carbon steel beads
from radiographs of the International Institute of Welding (IIW). The
radiographs were scanned using a greyscale with 256 levels, and the fractal
features of the surfaces constructed from the radiographic images were
characterized by means of Hurst, detrended-fluctuation, and minimal-cover
analyses. A Karhunen-Loeve transformation was then used to classify the curves
obtained from the fractal analyses of the various images, and a study of the
classification errors was performed. The obtained results indicate that fractal
analyses can be an effective additional tool for pattern recognition of weld

Phase diagram of a model for a binary mixture of nematic molecules on a Bethe lattice
We investigate the phase diagram of a discrete version of the Maier-Saupe
model with the inclusion of additional degrees of freedom to mimic a
distribution of rodlike and disklike molecules. Solutions of this problem on a
Bethe lattice come from the analysis of the fixed points of a set of nonlinear
recursion relations. Besides the fixed points associated with isotropic and
uniaxial nematic structures, there is also a fixed point associated with a
biaxial nematic structure. Due to the existence of large overlaps of the
stability regions, we resorted to a scheme to calculate the free energy of
these structures deep in the interior of a large Cayley tree. Both
thermodynamic and dynamic-stability analyses rule out the presence of a biaxial
phase, in qualitative agreement with previous mean-field results
Avaliação das condições de temperatura e escarificação para a superação de diásporos de teca (Tectona grandis Linn. F.) provenientes do Estado de Rondônia.
A germinação lenta e irregular diásporos de teca (Tectona grandis Linn. F.) é uma limitação para a produção de mudas. Embora métodos práticos estejam disponíveis poucos estudos quantificaram sistematicamente o efeito do aquecimento e da escarificação na quebra da dormência. O emprego de altas temperaturas na quebra de dormência pode ser realizado utilizando um coletor solar, aparelho de montagem simples que permite a captação da energia solar e transformação em energia calorífera. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a interação dos fatores aquecimento e escarificação para a superação da dormência de diásporos de teca. Foi avaliado experimento em delineamento de fatorial completo com quatro níveis do fator aquecimento (A1 - solarizador, A2 - estufa a 80ºC (12h), A3 - estufa a 80ºC (4h/3dias), A4- sem aquecimento) e três níveis do fator escarificação (E1 - escarificação física, E2 - escarificação química e E3 - sem escarificação), totalizando 12 tratamentos com cinco repetições de 25 plantas por parcela. O teste F a 1% de probabilidade indicou a ocorrência de interação significativa entre os fatores aquecimento e escarificação, resultado da menor germinação dos frutos escarificados. O fator aquecimento afetou positivamente a germinação. O menor desempenho associado aos maiores custos e riscos para manipulação desencorajam a utilização da escarificação química na quebra de dormência em teca. A alternância de temperaturas favoreceu a germinação, sendo que o coletor solar mostrou-se uma alternativa prática, viável e de menor custo para a superar a dormência de diásporos de teca.bitstream/CPAF-RO-2010/13270/1/bpd57-teca-.pd
