Portable electrophoresis apparatus using minimum electrolyte

    Get PDF
An electrophoresis unit for use in conducting electrophoretic analysis of specimens is described. The unit includes a sealable container in which a substrate mounted specimen is suspended in an electrolytic vapor. A heating unit is employed to heat a supply of electrolyte to produce the vapor. The substrate is suspended within the container by being attached between a pair of clips which also serve as electrodes to which a direct current power source may be connected

On the Geroch-Traschen class of metrics

We compare two approaches to semi-Riemannian metrics of low regularity. The maximally 'reasonable' distributional setting of Geroch and Traschen is shown to be consistently contained in the more general setting of nonlinear distributional geometry in the sense of Colombea

Systematic reviews of complementary therapies – an annotated bibliography. Part 2: Herbal medicine

    Get PDF
Background Complementary therapies are widespread but controversial. We aim to provide a comprehensive collection and a summary of systematic reviews of clinical trials in three major complementary therapies (acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy). This article is dealing with herbal medicine. Potentially relevant reviews were searched through the register of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and bibliographies of articles and books. To be included articles had to review prospective clinical trials of herbal medicines; had to describe review methods explicitly; had to be published; and had to focus on treatment effects. Information on conditions, interventions, methods, results and conclusions was extracted using a pre-tested form and summarized descriptively. Results From a total of 79 potentially relevant reviews pre-selected in the screening process 58 met the inclusion criteria. Thirty of the reports reviewed ginkgo (for dementia, intermittent claudication, tinnitus, and macular degeneration), hypericum (for depression) or garlic preparations (for cardiovascular risk factors and lower limb atherosclerosis). The quality of primary studies was criticized in the majority of the reviews. Most reviews judged the available evidence as promising but definitive conclusions were rarely possible. Conclusions Systematic reviews are available on a broad range of herbal preparations prescribed for defined conditions. There is very little evidence on the effectiveness of herbalism as practised by specialist herbalists who combine herbs and use unconventional diagnosis

Web-centric systems in support of argumentation, negotiation, and organizatioinal memory

    Get PDF
The purpose of this thesis is to propose and demonstrate a new negotiation and argumentation medium. This medium will take advantage of the latest in web technologies while conducting a detailed analysis and design of a prototype web based decision support system to support on-line argumentation, claims, and team decisions. The information obtained from the application will be stored in an ODBC database, to be used as part of the organizational memory. Organization memory will significantly enhance an organizations ability to utilize historical data in conjunction with current decision making requirements. The findings in this study strongly support the strengths of the action-resource based argumentation system (ARBAS) model and indicate that future research and application development would significantly advance the fields of web-based negotiation and argumentation. Comparison of photoexcited p-InAs THz radiation source with conventional thermal radiation sources

    No full text
P-type InAs excited by ultrashort optical pulses has been shown to be a strong emitter of terahertz radiation. In a direct comparison between a p-InAs emitter and conventional thermal radiationsources, we demonstrate that under typical excitation conditions p-InAs produces more radiation below 1.2 THz than a globar. By treating the globar as a blackbody emitter we calibrate a siliconbolometer which is used to determine the power of the p-InAs emitter. The emitted terahertz power was found to be 98±10 nW in this experiment

Self-Similar Evaporation of a Rigidly-Rotating Cosmic String Loop

The gravitational back-reaction on a certain type of rigidly-rotating cosmic string loop, first discovered by Allen, Casper and Ottewill, is studied at the level of the weak-field approximation. The near-field metric perturbations are calculated and used to construct the self-acceleration vector of the loop. Although the acceleration vector is divergent at the two kink points on the loop, its net effect on the trajectory over a single oscillation period turns out to be finite. The net back-reaction on the loop over a single period is calculated using a method due to Quashnock and Spergel, and is shown to induce a uniform shrinkage of the loop while preserving its original shape. The loop therefore evolves by self-similar evaporation.Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Classical and Quantum Gravit

Community rotorcraft air transportation benefits and opportunities

    Get PDF
Information about rotorcraft that will assist community planners in assessing and planning for the use of rotorcraft transportation in their communities is provided. Information useful to helicopter researchers, manufacturers, and operators concerning helicopter opportunities and benefits is also given. Three primary topics are discussed: the current status and future projections of rotorcraft technology, and the comparison of that technology with other transportation vehicles; the community benefits of promising rotorcraft transportation opportunities; and the integration and interfacing considerations between rotorcraft and other transportation vehicles. Helicopter applications in a number of business and public service fields are examined in various geographical settings
