Fixed points and amenability in non-positive curvature
Consider a proper cocompact CAT(0) space X. We give a complete algebraic
characterisation of amenable groups of isometries of X. For amenable discrete
subgroups, an even narrower description is derived, implying Q-linearity in the
torsion-free case.
We establish Levi decompositions for stabilisers of points at infinity of X,
generalising the case of linear algebraic groups to Is(X). A geometric
counterpart of this sheds light on the refined bordification of X (\`a la
Karpelevich) and leads to a converse to the Adams-Ballmann theorem. It is
further deduced that unimodular cocompact groups cannot fix any point at
infinity except in the Euclidean factor; this fact is needed for the study of
CAT(0) lattices.
Various fixed point results are derived as illustrations.Comment: 33 page
Three-loop HTL gluon thermodynamics at intermediate coupling
We calculate the thermodynamic functions of pure-glue QCD to three-loop order
using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of
finite temperature quantum field theory. We show that at three-loop order
hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory is compatible with lattice results for
the pressure, energy density, and entropy down to temperatures .
Our results suggest that HTLpt provides a systematic framework that can used to
calculate static and dynamic quantities for temperatures relevant at LHC.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figs. 2nd version: improved discussion and fixing typos.

Three-loop HTL QCD thermodynamics
The hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) framework is used to
calculate the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma to three-loop
order. This is the highest order accessible by finite temperature perturbation
theory applied to a non-Abelian gauge theory before the high-temperature
infrared catastrophe. All ultraviolet divergences are eliminated by
renormalization of the vacuum, the HTL mass parameters, and the strong coupling
constant. After choosing a prescription for the mass parameters, the three-loop
results for the pressure and trace anomaly are found to be in very good
agreement with recent lattice data down to , which are
temperatures accessible by current and forthcoming heavy-ion collision
experiments.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures; corresponds with published version in JHE
Cooperation of decay-accelerating factor and membrane cofactor protein in regulating survival of human cervical cancer cells

Abstract

Background

Decay-accelerating factor (DAF) and membrane cofactor protein (MCP) are the key molecules involved in cell protection against autologus complement, which restricts the action of complement at critical stages of the cascade reaction. The cooperative effect of DAF and MCP on the survival of human cervical cancer cell (ME180) has not been demonstrated.

Methods

In this study we applied, for the first time, short hairpin RNA (shRNA) to knock down the expression of the DAF and MCP with the aim of exploiting complement more effectively for tumor cell damage. Meanwhile, we investigated the cooperative effects of DAF and MCP on the viability and migration, moreover the proliferation of ME180 cell.

Results

The results showed that shRNA inhibition of DAF and MCP expression enhanced complement-dependent cytolysis (CDC) up to 39% for MCP and up to 36% for DAF, and the combined inhibition of both regulators yielded further additive effects in ME180 cells. Thus, the activities of DAF and MCP, when present together, are greater than the sum of the two protein individually.

Conclusion

These data indicated that combined DAF and MCP shRNA described in this study may offer an additional alternative to improve the efficacy of antibody-and complement-based cancer immunotherapy.</p
Dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12) derivatives of phosphonium salts: easy formation of nido-carborane phosphonium zwitterions
The first examples of arylphosphonium salts containing a dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12) (closo-carborane) are reported; in contrast to the 1,12-carborane derivative, the 1,2- and 1,7-isomers undergo a facile deboronation reaction in polar solvents to afford the corresponding nido-carborane phosphonium zwitterions
A Survey on the Krein-von Neumann Extension, the corresponding Abstract Buckling Problem, and Weyl-Type Spectral Asymptotics for Perturbed Krein Laplacians in Nonsmooth Domains
In the first (and abstract) part of this survey we prove the unitary
equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the
orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly
positive operator, for some in a Hilbert space to an abstract buckling problem operator.
This establishes the Krein extension as a natural object in elasticity theory
(in analogy to the Friedrichs extension, which found natural applications in
quantum mechanics, elasticity, etc.).
In the second, and principal part of this survey, we study spectral
properties for , the Krein--von Neumann extension of the
perturbed Laplacian (in short, the perturbed Krein Laplacian)
defined on , where is measurable, bounded and
nonnegative, in a bounded open set belonging to a
class of nonsmooth domains which contains all convex domains, along with all
domains of class , .Comment: 68 pages. arXiv admin note: extreme text overlap with arXiv:0907.144
Geometric optics with atomic beams scattered by a detuned standing laser wave
We report on theoretical and numerical study of propagation of atomic beams
crossing a detuned standing-wave laser beam in the geometric optics limit. The
interplay between external and internal atomic degrees of freedom is used to
manipulate the atomic motion along the optical axis by light. By adjusting the
atom-laser detuning, we demonstrate how to focus, split and scatter atomic
beams in a real experiment. The novel effect of chaotic scattering of atoms at
a regular near-resonant standing wave is found numerically and explained
qualitatively. Some applications of the effects found are discussed
Limits on WWZ and WW\gamma couplings from p\bar{p}\to e\nu jj X events at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV
We present limits on anomalous WWZ and WW-gamma couplings from a search for
WW and WZ production in p-bar p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. We use p-bar p
-> e-nu jjX events recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider during the 1992-1995 run. The data sample corresponds to an integrated
luminosity of 96.0+-5.1 pb^(-1). Assuming identical WWZ and WW-gamma coupling
parameters, the 95% CL limits on the CP-conserving couplings are
-0.33<lambda<0.36 (Delta-kappa=0) and -0.43<Delta-kappa<0.59 (lambda=0), for a
form factor scale Lambda = 2.0 TeV. Limits based on other assumptions are also
presented.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 2 table
