LIVED EXPERIENCES OF EARLY PREGNANCY AMONG TEENAGERS: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY
This case study attempts to determine the lived experiences of early pregnancy among high and low performing students in terms of the causes, effects, challenges and their coping mechanisms. The naturalistic paradigm was used in the study with the purposively chosen informants with varied tools to cross-check their responses. Results show that curiosity, lack of sexual knowledge, financial and family problems and uncontrolled emotions cause pregnancy among teenagers. Teenage mothers face a lot of challenges after pregnancy like providing proper care and needs of their child. High performing teenage mothers are college levels and work for a living to support the needs of their child. Low performing teenage mothers ended up as housewives. Teenage mothers have less possibility to finish their studies after engaging in early pregnancy. Taking care of the baby and providing financial assistance are challenges they encountered and tried to cope up with. The academic performance, the financial status and support of the family of teenage mothers determine if they can pursue their studies and achieve their dreams in life. Sex and sexuality education should not just be a concept but should be developed further as a complete discipline and much more research should be conducted to that regard
Digital Simulations for Grade 7 to 10 Mathematics
This article describes a Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology (DOST-PCIEERD) project aimed to facilitate the implementation of the mathematical objectives raised by the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K to 12 program in the Philippines through the use of innovative digital technologies. In particular, a selection of application software (“apps”) were created for Grade 7 to 10 mathematics that covered topics indicated in the five strands outlined in the K to 12 program – namely (1) number, (2) geometry, (3) measurement, (4) patterns and algebra, and (5) statistics and probability. The design of the apps was informed by an amalgamated framework of the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer 2005) and Mathematical Theories of Representation (Goldin 1998). The design was informed by how students learn and how students learn mathematics. The project also aimed to design manipulable software that allows learners to construct and grapple with their mental representations of mathematical concepts. This paper describes a selection of the apps designed by the project and how their features were informed by the theoretical framework. It also presents results from pilot studies that demonstrate the apps’ potential to increase performance, facilitate conceptual development, and increase learners’ engagement
Copyright Protection for Philippine Publications
Archivists and librarians bear enormous responsibilities in providing access to materials under copyright without documented permission in that they share with their patrons any liability for copyright violation. They are uncomfortably placed on the line between the right of the
intellectual property-holder to the fruit of his/her labor, on the one hand, and the right of the public to know, on the other. At the same time, archivists and librarians must serve the demands of research and scholarship. An added
complication is the ease with which present-day technology enables users of information to duplicate or replicate copyrighted material. Thus, copyright laws have become harder to enforce and interpret. The line should be drawn by the law, but in many cases, judgment calls are made, and the judgment often is made wittingly or unwittingly by the archivist or librarian. When the right to know comes into conflict with the right of the author or creator to the fruit of labor, the archivist or librarian is bound to rely on the law.
To anticipate and avert whatever legal problems may arise, and to provide a clear understanding of what may and may not be done with copyrighted (and even uncopyrighted)materials, this paper discusses issues and concerns of Filipino librarians and archivists with the new Philippine Copyright Law, and seeks to answer the following questions:
• What copyright problems are encountered in Philippine libraries/archives?
• What is protected by the Philippine Copyright Law?
• What reproduction rights do Philippine libraries/archives have under the law?
• How can these libraries/archives avoid copyright liability?
• What can Filipino librarians do to help in the enforcement of the law
The State of the Filipiniana Collection at the DLSU Library
This article presents an interesting case study in the development and growth of a Filipiniana Collection in one of the country 's leading academic institutions. The state of
the art of De La Salle University Library s collection of Filipiniana, from its early beginnings in 1970 until school year 2000, speaks loudly of the commitment of this
institution to contribute to the organization, preservation and use of our cultural heritage as embodied in this unique body of literature
Digital Initiatives in Archival Preservation
For digital archives, the innovative use of information technology will enable archival information to be accessed anywhere anytime by anyone who needs them. This is the ultimate objective of archival preservation---to preserve materials of enduring value for the sake of posterity. However, the need to integrate technology and content is evidently significant. Funding assistance and the commitment of archivists and information professionals in such digital initiatives are critical to its success
The Future of Library Cooperation in Southeast Asia
The promotion of library cooperation in the fields of documentation, bibliographic access, digitization, open access scholarly publishing and related activities would enhance today the networking and linkage capabilities among libraries in developing countries, particularly those in. the disadvantaged regions, such as in Southeast Asia. The strategic development of libraries in this region through collaboration, partnering schemes, and networking can create an information-rich environment, and wide opportunities to benefit from shared information resources. A major part of the success of any library cooperation
will largely depend on how well cooperating members can exploit these networking opportunities and contribute to the development and growth of knowledge on a global
scale. This paper, while reviewing and expanding on the above points, aims to reawaken the spirit of cooperation among libraries within the region by promoting the development of sustainable projects that are doable and mutually beneficial
Research in Librarianship: Challenges, Competencies, and Strategies
Research in librarianship, particularly within the context of the Philippine situation, is sad to say, very disappointing. Why, because there is really not much to talk about on research in Philippine Librarianship, outside of the realm of graduate work, or research pursued in connection with graduate studies. While our profession has an abundance of well-educated, well-trained professionals, it is sadly lacking in research-oriented librarians. Research has an important role in understanding the needs to which libraries should be responsive, and if librarians need to conduct research in order to better assess the effectiveness of their approaches to delivering library services, then librarians and other LIS professionals, including the agencies responsible for educating them, and their employing institutions, should be more attentive to such a critical activity as library research
Library consortia and cooperation in this digital age: an Overview of the Philippine Experience
For developing countries like the Philippines, there is a remarkable range of cooperative activities and consortial arrangements that even transcend geographical boundaries. This article presents an overview of Philippine experience with library cooperation, their commonalities and variations, the significant contributions of different library consortia to the growth and development of libraries within and outside their sphere of influence, and the challenges these local models of consortia are facing in this digital age
Library Automation and its Impact on Strategic Planning for Academic Libraries: a case study of De La Salle University Library
In the Philippines, only a few academic and /or research libraries have taken the lead in spearheading library automation. As one of the three leading educational institutions, De La Salle University took on the challenge of charting a strategic course towards a totally automated library environment . This case study attempts to make an assessment of the University Library’s computerization planning process, through an analysis of the issues and concerns it had to face in developing an automation program, and concludes with a strategic plan for its implementation and future directions
