CM cycles on Kuga–Sato varieties over Shimura curves and Selmer groups
Given a modular form f of even weight larger than two and an imaginary quadratic field K
satisfying a relaxed Heegner hypothesis, we construct a collection of CM cycles on a Kuga–Sato
variety over a suitable Shimura curve which gives rise to a system of Galois cohomology classes
attached to f enjoying the compatibility properties of an Euler system. Then we use Kolyvagin’s
method [21], as adapted by Nekova´¿r [28] to higher weight modular forms, to bound the size of the relevant Selmer group associated to f and K and prove the finiteness of the (primary part) of the Shafarevich–Tate group, provided that a suitable cohomology class does not vanish.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Detection of Anomalous Reactor Activity Using Antineutrino Count Rate Evolution Over the Course of a Reactor Cycle
This paper analyzes the sensitivity of antineutrino count rate measurements
to changes in the fissile content of civil power reactors. Such measurements
may be useful in IAEA reactor safeguards applications. We introduce a
hypothesis testing procedure to identify statistically significant differences
between the antineutrino count rate evolution of a standard 'baseline' fuel
cycle and that of an anomalous cycle, in which plutonium is removed and
replaced with an equivalent fissile worth of uranium. The test would allow an
inspector to detect anomalous reactor activity, or to positively confirm that
the reactor is operating in a manner consistent with its declared fuel
inventory and power level. We show that with a reasonable choice of detector
parameters, the test can detect replacement of 73 kg of plutonium in 90 days
with 95% probability, while controlling the false positive rate at 5%. We show
that some improvement on this level of sensitivity may be expected by various
means, including use of the method in conjunction with existing reactor
safeguards methods. We also identify a necessary and sufficient daily
antineutrino count rate to achieve the quoted sensitivity, and list examples of
detectors in which such rates have been attained.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted to J. Appl. Phy
Coherent water transport across the South Atlantic
The role of mesoscale eddies in transporting Agulhas leakage is investigated
using a recent technique from nonlinear dynamical systems theory applied on
geostrophic currents inferred from the over two-decade-long satellite altimetry
record. Eddies are found to acquire material coherence away from the Agulhas
retroflection, near the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic. Yearly, 1 to 4
coherent material eddies are detected with diameters ranging from 40 to 280 km.
A total of 23 eddy cores of about 50 km in diameter and with at least 30\pct of
their contents traceable into the Indian Ocean were found to travel across the
subtropical gyre with minor filamentation. Only 1 eddy core was found to pour
its contents on the North Brazil Current. While ability of eddies to carry
Agulhas leakage northwestward across the South Atlantic is supported by our
analysis, this is more restricted than suggested by earlier ring transport
assessments.Comment: In pres
