Investigations on structural, optical, and impedance spectroscopy studies of titanium dioxide nanoparticles
This article explains a novel synthesis for producing titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles by a sol-gel technique using titanium tetraisopropoxide as a titanium source. The synthesized nanoparticles were analyzed using many measurements like X-ray diffraction (XRD), HRTEM, absorption UV spectroscopy, FTIR, and ac impedance spectroscopy. X-ray peaks were used to calculate the crystallite size and lattice strain by WilliamsonâHall method. Crystallite size calculated from x-ray diffraction using the Scherrer equation gives an approximate size and cannot be used for measurements. TiO2 nanoparticles are found to possess a tetragonal structure with a crystalline size around 12 nm. Particle size was confirmed by HRTEM images. The optical studies response for the nanoparticles showed the possible visible absorption peaks for TiO2 nanoparticles are 323 nm. Bandgap energy (Eg) of the TiO2 nanoparticle calculated from UV visible absorption spectra is discussed, and the bandgap is 3.14 eV. FTIR spectra showed vibration bands of the Ti-O network. AC Conductivity properties of TiO2 nanoparticles are studied in the frequency range 1 to 8 MHz at varying temperatures. The conductivity of the TiO2 nanoparticle is found to be constant in the low angular frequency region. Dielectric parameters were analyzed at different temperatures and frequencies.

Assessing chronological age of unaccompanied minors in Southern Italy
The increasing volume of, and subsequent complexities resulting from, migratory flows in the broader context of globalization has led to a range of problems, not only the protection of human rights and disease control but also the identification of those with the right to apply for refugee status and the age assessment of unaccompanied minors. Italy is a magnet for immigration from other countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea because the Italian coasts are within easy reach. In Italy, as in other western countries, unaccompanied asylum seekers deemed to be younger than 18 years face a very different path through the immigration system from that experienced by adults. Generally, adults are subject to immediate deportation or detention in jail. Minors are processed through the juvenile system, where detection is not mandatory; they will often have access to educational programs and may be granted a residency permit. The Section of Legal Medicine of the University of Bari was approached by immigration police authorities and judges to explore the possibility of examining unaccompanied asylum seekers, who claim do be younger than 18 years, to assess their age. A group of forensic pathologists and odontologists performed this evaluation relying on the skeletal maturation as seen on radiographs of the wrist and the pelvis for iliac crests and on an orthopantomograph, together with background information and clinical examination of each individual. Case studies are presented. This article does not attempt to give a definitive account of the different scientific methods for the assessment of age. It is important to understand some of the methods that may be used in an attempt to assess developmental maturity and from which it may be possible to ''read off'' an approximate chronological age. © 2011 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

Non-spatial skills differ in the front and rear peri-personal space
In measuring behavioural and pupillary responses to auditory oddball stimuli delivered in the front and rear peri-personal space, we find that pupils dilate in response to rare stimuli, both target and distracters. Dilation in response to targets is stronger than the response to distracters, implying a task relevance effect on pupil responses. Crucially, pupil dilation in response to targets is also selectively modulated by the location of sound sources: stronger in the front than in the rear peri-personal space, in spite of matching behavioural performance. This supports the concept that even non-spatial skills, such as the ability to alert in response to behaviourally relevant events, are differentially engaged across subregions of the peri-personal space

A new process chain for producing bulk metallic glass replication masters with micro- and nano-scale features
YesA novel process chain for serial production of polymer-based devices incorporating both micro- and nano-scale features is proposed. The process chain is enabled by the use of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG) to achieve the necessary level of compatibility and complementarity between its component technologies. It integrates two different technologies, namely laser ablation and focused ion beam (FIB) milling for micro-structuring and sub-micron patterning, respectively, thus to fabricate inserts incorporating different length scale functional features. Two alternative laser sources, namely nano-second (NS) and pico-second (PS) lasers, were considered as potential candidates for the first step in this master-making process chain. The capabilities of the component technologies together with some issues associated with their integration were studied. To validate the replication performance of the produced masters, a Zr-based BMG insert was used to produce a small batch of micro-fluidic devices by micro-injection moulding. Furthermore, an experimental study was also carried out to determine whether it would be possible by NS laser ablation to structure the Zr-based BMG workpieces with a high surface integrity whilst retaining the BMG's non-crystalline morphology. Collectively, it was demonstrated that the proposed process chain could be a viable fabrication route for mass production of polymer devices incorporating different length scale features
Anomalous density dependence of static friction in sand
We measured experimentally the static friction force on the surface of
a glass rod immersed in dry sand. We observed that is extremely sensitive
to the closeness of packing of grains. A linear increase of the grain-density
yields to an exponentially increasing friction force. We also report on a novel
periodicity of during gradual pulling out of the rod. Our observations
demonstrate the central role of grain bridges and arches in the macroscopic

Straining at work and its relationship with personality profiles and individual consequences in healthcare workers (HCWs)
Straining is an attenuated form of mobbing, in which the continuity of vexatious actions is not driven by a discriminatory intent. With the objective of testing the possible moderating role of personality in the relationship between perceptions about straining at work and individual consequences, a correlational design research involved 374 healthcare workers (HCWs) from two Italian hospitals. The following questionnaires were administered: (1) Short Negative Acts Questionnaire (SâNAQ), to assess discriminative actions at work); (2) the Italian version of the Big Five Inventory (BFIâ10 scale), to assess personality factors; (3) Occupational Stress Indicator (OSI), to measure psychological and physical health. Regression analysis and Structural Equation Models (SEM) were computed in order to test the relationships between variables. Perceived straining showed significant correlations with both psychological and physical health. Conscientiousness was inversely proportional to workârelated bullying (WB), as agreeableness was to personal bullying (PB). Emotional stability was negatively correlated with all the three component scales of SâNAQ: WB, PB, and social bullying. The results seem to confirm that straining perceptions especially elicit, through emotional stability, psychological consequences. As regards the role of emotional stability in risk perceptions, it seems management has to pay thorough attention to personal factors in organizational perceptions and to straining actions
