    Improving Sustainability and Circularity of European Food Waste Management with a Life Cycle Approach

    In the past years, several research initiatives have been promoted in the area of food waste. Many of these were focused on the identification of key drivers of food wastage and on the quantification of food waste generation. While these initiatives provided fairly accurate information over European food waste generation and management routes, they did not always deliver comprehensive and comparable knowledge on the sustainability of food waste management and on ways to mitigate negative consequences at environmental, economic and social levels. Building on most recent methodological advancement and policy needs, the work presented in this report aims at providing policy/decision makers and waste managers with a life-cycle based framework methodology to quantify the environmental and economic sustainability performance of European food waste management. This methodology can help identify options for improvement of such performance, thus can offer relevant insight to the decision making process. A numerical case study is also developed. This is meant to give an example of simplified application of the proposed methodology to a fictitious European waste management context. The environmental dimension has been evaluated with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software EASETECH, while the economic assessment is conducted based on a number of different indicators expressing the costs associated with food waste management. This methodology makes use of multi-objective optimization and Pareto optimality concepts in order to help identify most sustainable management options for food waste, intended as those that minimize environmental and economic impacts. In any case, the proposed methodology is meant to only provide relevant information that can support science-based decision making.     Effect of different dietary tannin extracts on lamb growth performances and meat oxidative stability: comparison between mimosa, chestnut and tara.

    Little information is available on the effects of different sources of tannins on ruminant product quality. Nowadays several tannin-rich extracts, produced from different plants, are available and contain tannins belonging to different chemical groups, but most of these have not been used so far as feed supplements. The present study aimed at comparing the effects of feeding three tannin extracts (one containing condensed tannins and two containing hydrolysable tannins) to lambs on growth performances and meat oxidative stability. Comisana male lambs were divided into four groups (n=9 each) and were fed for 75 days: a concentrate-based diet (CON), or CON supplemented with 4% tannin extracts from either mimosa (MI; Acacia mearnsii, De Wild; condensed tannins), chestnut (CH; Castanea sativa, Mill; hydrolysable ellagitannins) or tara (TA; Cesalpinia spinosa, (Molina) Kuntze; hydrolysable gallotannins). Only CH reduced growth rate, final weight, carcass weight and feed intake (P0.05). The TA diet increased (P<0.001) the concentration of γ-tocopherol in muscle and tended to increase that of α-tocopherol (P=0.058). Oxidative stability of raw and cooked meat, or of meat homogenates incubated with pro-oxidants, was not affected by the extracts. These results, compared with those reported in the literature, highlight that some effects of tannins cannot be easily generalized, but may strictly depend on their specific characteristics and on conditions inherent to the basal diet and the metabolic status of the animals

    Molecular detection of tick-borne pathogens in wild red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Central Italy

    Spleen samples from 153 red foxes, shot during regular hunting season in the province of Pisa (Central Italy), were examined to detect DNA of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia canis, Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, Hepatozoon canis and Babesia sp./Theileria sp. DNA of vector-borne pathogens was detected in 120 (78.43%; 95% CI: 71.06–84.66%) foxes. Specifically, 75 (49%; 95% CI: 40.86–57.22%) animals scored PCR-positive per H. canis, 68 (44.44%; 95% CI: 36.42–52.69%) for E. canis, 35 (22.88%; 95% CI: 16.48–30.35%) for piroplasms (Theileria annae), 3 (1.96%; 95% CI: 0.41–5.62%) for C. burnetii and 1 (0.65%; 95% CI: 0.02–3.59%) for A. phagocytophilum. No positive reaction was observed for F. tularensis. Fifty-six animals (36.6%; 95% CI: 28.97–44.76%) were positive for two or three pathogens. Red foxes result to be involved in the cycle of vector-borne pathogens that are associated to disease in dogs and humans

    Serum chloride as a respiratory failure marker in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Respiratory failure is the most common cause of death in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and occurs with great variability among patients according to different phenotypic features. Early predictors of respiratory failure in ALS are important to start non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Venous serum chloride values correlate with carbonate (HCO3-) blood levels and reflect metabolic compensation of respiratory acidosis. Despite its wide availability and low cost, few data on serum chloride as a prognostic marker exist in ALS literature. In the present study, we evaluated serum chloride values at diagnosis as prognostic biomarkers for overall survival and NIV adaptation in a retrospective center-based cohort of ALS patients. We collected all ALS patients with serum chloride assessment at diagnosis, identified through the Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta Register for ALS, evaluating the correlations among serum chloride, clinical features, and other serum biomarkers. Thereafter, time-to-event analysis was modeled to predict overall survival and NIV start. We found a significant correlation between serum chloride and inflammatory status markers, serum sodium, forced vital capacity (FVC), ALS functional rating scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) item 10 and 11, age at diagnosis, and weight loss. Time-to-event analysis confirmed both in univariate analysis and after multiple confounders’ adjustment that serum chloride value at diagnosis significantly influenced survival and time to NIV start. According to our analysis, based on a large ALS cohort, we found that serum chloride analyzed at diagnosis is a low-cost marker of impending respiratory decompensation. In our opinion, it should be added among the serum prognostic biomarkers that are able to stratify patients into different prognostic categories even when performed in the early phases of the disease

    Withdrawal of mechanical ventilation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients: a multicenter Italian survey

    Background: Law 219/2017 was approved in Italy in December 2017, after a years-long debate on the autonomy of healthcare choices. This Law, for the first time in Italian legislation, guarantees the patient's right to request for withdrawal of life-sustaining treatments, including mechanical ventilation (MV). Objective: To investigate the current status of MV withdrawal in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients in Italy and to assess the impact of Law 219/2017 on this practice. Methods: We conducted a Web-based survey, addressed to Italian neurologists with expertise in ALS care, and members of the Motor Neuron Disease Study Group of the Italian Society of Neurology. Results: Out of 40 ALS Italian centers, 34 (85.0%) responded to the survey. Law 219/2017 was followed by an increasing trend in MV withdrawals, and a significant increase of neurologists involved in this procedure (p 0.004). However, variations across Italian ALS centers were observed, regarding the inconsistent involvement of community health services and palliative care (PC) services, and the intervention and composition of the multidisciplinary team. Conclusions: Law 219/2017 has had a positive impact on the practice of MV withdrawal in ALS patients in Italy. The recent growing public attention on end-of-life care choices, along with the cultural and social changes in Italy, requires further regulatory frameworks that strengthen tools for self-determination, increased investment of resources in community and PC health services, and practical recommendations and guidelines for health workers involved
