Enacting Productive Dialogue: Addressing the Challenge that Non-Human Cognition Poses to Collaborations Between Enactivism and Heideggerian Phenomenology
This chapter uses one particular proposal for interdisciplinary collaboration – in this case, between early Heideggerian phenomenology and enactivist cognitive science – as an example of how such partnerships may confront and negotiate tensions between the perspectives they bring together. The discussion begins by summarising some of the intersections that render Heideggerian and enactivist thought promising interlocutors for each other. It then moves on to explore how Heideggerian enactivism could respond to the challenge of reconciling the significant differences in the ways that each discourse seeks to apply the structures it claims to uncover
Optical Surface Photometry of a Sample of Disk Galaxies. II Structural Components
This work presents the structural decomposition of a sample of 11 disk
galaxies, which span a range of different morphological types. The U, B, V, R,
and I photometric information given in Paper I (color and color-index images
and luminosity, ellipticity, and position-angle profiles) has been used to
decide what types of components form the galaxies before carrying out the
decomposition. We find and model such components as bulges, disks, bars, lenses

Robust Speech Detection for Noisy Environments
This paper presents a robust voice activity detector (VAD) based on hidden Markov models (HMM) to improve speech recognition systems in stationary and non-stationary noise environments: inside motor vehicles (like cars or planes) or inside buildings close to high traffic places (like in a control tower for air traffic control (ATC)). In these environments, there is a high stationary noise level caused by vehicle motors and additionally, there could be people speaking at certain distance from the main speaker producing non-stationary noise. The VAD presented in this paper is characterized by a new front-end and a noise level adaptation process that increases significantly the VAD robustness for different signal to noise ratios (SNRs). The feature vector used by the VAD includes the most relevant Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), normalized log energy and delta log energy. The proposed VAD has been evaluated and compared to other well-known VADs using three databases containing different noise conditions: speech in clean environments (SNRs mayor que 20 dB), speech recorded in stationary noise environments (inside or close to motor vehicles), and finally, speech in non stationary environments (including noise from bars, television and far-field speakers). In the three cases, the detection error obtained with the proposed VAD is the lowest for all SNRs compared to Acero¿s VAD (reference of this work) and other well-known VADs like AMR, AURORA or G729 annex b
Control over stress induces plasticity of individual prefrontal cortical neurons: A conductance-based neural simulation
Behavioral control over stressful stimuli induces resilience to future conditions when control is lacking. The medial prefrontal cortex(mPFC) is a critically important brain region required for plasticity of stress resilience. We found that control over stress induces plasticity of the intrinsic voltage-gated conductances of pyramidal neurons in the PFC. To gain insight into the underlying biophysical mechanisms of this plasticity we used the conductance- based neural simulation software tool, NEURON, to model the increase in membrane excitability associated with resilience to stress. A ball and stick multicompartment conductance-based model was used to realistically fit passive and active data traces from prototypical pyramidal neurons in neurons in rats with control over tail shock stress and those lacking control. The results indicate that the plasticity of membrane excitability associated with control over stress can be attributed to an increase in Na+ and Ca2+ T-type conductances and an increase in the leak conductance. Using simulated dendritic synaptic inputs we observed an increase in excitatory postsynaptic summation and amplification resulting in elevated action potential output. This realistic simulation suggests that control over stress enhances the output of the PFC and offers specific testable hypotheses to guide future electrophysiological mechanistic studies in animal models of resilience and vulnerability to stress
Machine learning techniques to select Be star candidates. An application in the OGLE-IV Gaia south ecliptic pole field
Statistical pattern recognition methods have provided competitive solutions
for variable star classification at a relatively low computational cost. In
order to perform supervised classification, a set of features is proposed and
used to train an automatic classification system. Quantities related to the
magnitude density of the light curves and their Fourier coefficients have been
chosen as features in previous studies. However, some of these features are not
robust to the presence of outliers and the calculation of Fourier coefficients
is computationally expensive for large data sets. We propose and evaluate the
performance of a new robust set of features using supervised classifiers in
order to look for new Be star candidates in the OGLE-IV Gaia south ecliptic
pole field. We calculated the proposed set of features on six types of variable
stars and on a set of Be star candidates reported in the literature. We
evaluated the performance of these features using classification trees and
random forests along with K-nearest neighbours, support vector machines, and
gradient boosted trees methods. We tuned the classifiers with a 10-fold
cross-validation and grid search. We validated the performance of the best
classifier on a set of OGLE-IV light curves and applied this to find new Be
star candidates. The random forest classifier outperformed the others. By using
the random forest classifier and colour criteria we found 50 Be star candidates
in the direction of the Gaia south ecliptic pole field, four of which have
infrared colours consistent with Herbig Ae/Be stars. Supervised methods are
very useful in order to obtain preliminary samples of variable stars extracted
from large databases. As usual, the stars classified as Be stars candidates
must be checked for the colours and spectroscopic characteristics expected for
them
Atmosphere Extinction at the ORM on La Palma: A 20 yr Statistical Database Gathered at the Carlsberg Meridian Telescope
The Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), in the Canary Islands
(Spain), was one of the candidates to host the future European Extremely Large
Telescope (E-ELT) and is the site of the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), the
largest optical infrared facility to date. Sky transparency is a key parameter
as it defines the quality of the photometry to be acquired in the astronomical
observations. We present a study of the atmosphere extinction at the ORM,
carried out after analysis of a database spanning more than 20 yr, to our
knowledge, the longest and most complete and homogeneous in situ database
available for any observatory. It is based on photometric measurements in the V
band and r' band (transformed to the V -band extinction coefficient kV) using
the Carlsberg Meridian Telescope (CMT). Clear seasonal variations that repeat
yearly are observed. The median value of kV is 0.13 mag/airmass; the mean value
has a maximum in the summer months (June- September), corresponding to the
season with maximum frequency of nights affected by dust or cirrus (~29% in
summer, but only ~13% during the rest of the year). Two volcanic eruptions took
place during the database baseline, which has enabled the study of the impact
of volcanoes on the global atmosphere extinction. For the 5 yr of available
information, we have estimated the average monthly weather downtime from the
CMT data log, obtaining a result (20.7%) in reasonable agreement with earlier
studies. The main conclusion of our study is that there is no significant
evidence from the CMT data for any secular changes in kV over the 20 yr
