    The Historical Development of the Port of Livorno (Italy) and Its New Port Plan 2010 in Advanced Stage of Elaboration

    The geographical location makes the port of Livorno one of the most important in Italy. The port, in fact, benefits of an extended network of roads and rails connecting it with the rest of Italy, and central and southern Europe as well. The history of Livorno and its port is inextricably linked to that of Pisa and Florence, and to the complexity of events that determined the political set-up of the region along several centuries. Looking at the new port plan of Livorno has made it necessary an extensive overview of the history of both the port, and of its planning. This analysis has allowed: to understand the reason for the different choices made in the past for the development of the port, highlighting, when necessary, the errors made; to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing port infrastructure; to identify the works needed to boost the port in the European context. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the analysis performed for the implementation of the new Livorno port plan 2010 and show how the port planning in Italy is often conditioned by hundreds of centuries of history

    Development of n-DoF preloaded structures for impact mitigation in cobots

    A core issue in collaborative robotics is that of impact mitigation, especially when collisions happen with operators. Passively compliant structures can be used as the frame of the cobot, although usually they are implemented by means of a single DoF. However, n-DoF preloaded structures offer a number of advantages, in terms of flexibility in designing their behavior. In this work we propose a comprehensive framework for classifying n-DoF preloaded structures, including 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional arrays. Also, we study the implications of the peculiar behavior of these structures - which present sharp stiff-to-compliant transitions at design-determined load thresholds - on impact mitigation. To this regard, an analytical n-DoF dynamic model was developed and numerically implemented. A prototype of a 10-DoF structure was tested under static and impact loads, showing a very good agreement with the model. Future developments will see the application of n-DoF preloaded structures to impact-mitigation on cobots and in the field of mobile robots, as well as to the field of novel architected materials

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Differentiated thyroid carcinoma offers a good model to investigate the possible correlation between specific gene mutations and chromosome instability. Papillary thyroid neoplasms are characterized by different mutually exclusive genetic alterations, some of which are associated with aneuploidy and aggressive phenotype.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We investigated the centrosome status and mitotic abnormalities in three thyroid carcinoma-derived cell lines, each maintaining the specific, biologically relevant gene alteration harbored by the parental tumors: <it>RET/PTC1 </it>rearrangement in TPC1; heterozygous and homozygous <it>BRAF<sup>V600E </sup></it>mutation in K1 and in B-CPAP, respectively. B-CPAP cells showed a statistically significant (<it>P </it>< 0.01) higher frequency of abnormal mitotic figures compared to TPC1 and K1 cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data indicate that <it>RET/PTC1 </it>oncogenic activity is not related to mitotic chromosome impairment and missegregation whereas, based on the consistent difference in types/frequencies of centrosome and spindle abnormalities observed between K1 and B-CPAP cells, the hetero/homozygous allelic status of <it>BRAF<sup>V600E </sup></it>mutation seems to be not irrelevant in respect to chromosomal instability development.</p
