    Landings and discards on the pulse trawl MFV "Vertrouwen"TX68 in 2009

    The catches in terms of landings and discards were monitored onboard MFV “Vertrouwen” TX68, fishing with two pulse trawls using the Verburg-Holland system during four weeks in June-August 2009. The average fishing speed was about 5 knots. The fishing area of the four trips was east of the coast of England and fishing depth was 36m on average with a minimum depth of 20 m and a maximum depth of 46 m. For this study the standard sampling procedure for the yearly monitoring of discards of conventional beam trawl fleet was applied (van Helmond and van Overzee, 2008). Sampled numbers of fish per haul were raised to numbers and weight per hour, for both. When compared with conventional beam trawls in previous years it seems that with the pulse trawl more sole in number and weights per unit of time was discarded and less plaice was discarded. However, the average discard percentages of as well plaice as sole for the pulse trawl of this study were within range with the average discard percentages of conventional beam trawls in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (van Keeken, 2006; van Helmond and van Overzee, 2007; van Helmond and van Overzee, 2008) . This study gives a general impression of the performance in terms of catches of fishing with a pulse trawl using the Verburg-Holland system. However it is recommended to conduct a comparative study on performance of a beam trawl and a pulse trawl, where the two vessels of similar size fish simultaneously, like was done in 2006 by van Marlen et al.     Attentional processes of high-skilled soccer players with congenital hemiparesis: Differences related to the side of the hemispheric lesion

Participants (N = 10) dribbled a slalom course as quickly and accurately as possible under two attentional-focus manipulation conditions. In the task-relevant focus condition, they attended to the foot that was in contact with the ball, whereas in the task-irrelevant focus condition, they monitored a series of words played on a tape. The time taken to complete the slalom course was registered. Performances of individuals with left and right hemiparesis were compared to explore differential effects of hemispheric lesion. The high-skilled players with congenital hemiparesis showed similar attentional-focus effects as those previously reported in the literature for high-skilled players without neurological disorders (Beilock et al., 2002; Ford et al., 2005). Task-relevant focus increased dribbling time, whereas a task-irrelevant focus did not result in a significant change in dribbling time. These findings generalized to each of the five participants with left hemiparesis (i.e., damage to the right hemisphere). By contrast, the effects of a task-relevant focus were less consistent for participants with right hemiparesis (i.e., left-hemisphere damage). This corroborates suggestions that the reinvestment of procedural knowledge is a left-lateralized function. The implications for the training of individuals with congenital brain damage are discussed

    The effect of the "Rod-and-frame" Illusion on grip planning in a sequential object manipulation task

    We investigated the effect of visual context (i.e., a visual illusion) on the planning of a sequential object manipulation task. Participants (n = 13) had to grasp a rod embedded in a "rod-and-frame" illusion and insert the rod-end into a tight hole in a pre-defined way. The grip type (defined by start posture, either pronated or supinated; and end posture, either comfortable or uncomfortable) used to grasp the rod was registered as a macroscopic variable of motor planning. Different rod orientations forced the participants to switch between grip types. As expected, most participants switched between pronated and supinated start postures, such that they ended the movement with a comfortable end posture. As it has been argued that planning is dependent on visual context information, we hypothesized that the visual illusion would affect the specific rod orientation at which participants would switch into a different grip type. This hypothesis was confirmed. More specifically, the illusion affected the critical spatial information that is used for action planning. Collectively, these findings are the first to show an effect of an illusion on motor planning in a sequential object manipulation task. © 2007 Springer-Verlag

    Eye–hand coordination during manual object transport with the affected and less affected hand in adolescents with hemiparetic cerebral palsy

    In the present study we investigated eye–hand coordination in adolescents with hemiparetic cerebral palsy (CP) and neurologically healthy controls. Using an object prehension and transport task, we addressed two hypotheses, motivated by the question whether early brain damage and the ensuing limitations of motor activity lead to general and/or effector-specific effects in visuomotor control of manual actions. We hypothesized that individuals with hemiparetic CP would more closely visually monitor actions with their affected hand, compared to both their less affected hand and to control participants without a sensorimotor impairment. A second, more speculative hypothesis was that, in relation to previously established deficits in prospective action control in individuals with hemiparetic CP, gaze patterns might be less anticipatory in general, also during actions performed with the less affected hand. Analysis of the gaze and hand movement data revealed the increased visual monitoring of participants with CP when using their affected hand at the beginning as well as during object transport. In contrast, no general deficit in anticipatory gaze control in the participants with hemiparetic CP could be observed. Collectively, these findings are the first to directly show that individuals with hemiparetic CP adapt eye–hand coordination to the specific constraints of the moving limb, presumably to compensate for sensorimotor deficits

    Disentangling heterogeneity in contemporary undifferentiated arthritis – A large cohort study using latent class analysis

    Objectives: Undifferentiated arthritis(UA) is clinically heterogeneous and differs in outcomes ranging from spontaneous resolution to RA-development. Therefore, we hypothesized that subgroups exist within UA and we aimed to identify homogeneous groups based on clinical features, and thereafter to relate these groups to the outcomes spontaneous resolution and RA-development. These outcomes can only be studied in UA-patients in which DMARD-treatment does not influence the natural disease course; these cohorts are scarce. Methods: We studied autoantibody-negative UA-patients (not fulfilling 1987/2010 RA-criteria, no alternate diagnosis), included in the Leiden Early Arthritis Clinic between 1993 and 2006, when early DMARD-treatment in UA was infrequent. Latent class analysis was used to identify subgroups based on combinations of clinical features. Within these subgroups, test-characteristics were assessed for spontaneous resolution of arthritis and RA-development within 1 year. Results: 310 consecutive UA-patients were studied. Five classes were identified: location and number of swollen joints were most distinguishing. Classes were characterized by: 1) polyarthritis, often symmetric; 2) oligoarthritis, frequently with subacute onset; 3) wrist-monoarthritis, often with subacute onset, increased BMI and without morning stiffness; 4) small-joint monoarthritis, often without increased acute phase reactants, and 5) large-joint monoarthritis, often with subacute onset. Studying the classes in relation to the outcomes revealed that patients without spontaneous resolution (thus having persistent disease) were nearly absent in the classes characterized by monoarthritis (specificity &gt;90%). Additionally, patients who developed RA were infrequent in monoarthritis classes (sensitivity &lt;7%). Conclusion: Using a data-driven unsupervised approach, five subgroups within contemporary UA were identified. These have differences in the natural course of disease.</p
