On possibility to increase the TMCI threshold by RF quadrupole
Transverse mode coupling instability is one of the major limitations of a single bunch current in storage rings. Up to now it appeared in large electron-positron machines, while its presence in proton colliders is under question. This paper is devoted to a theoretical analysis of the effect of longitudinal variation of the betatron tune (induced by RF quad) on transverse mode coupling instability threshold. It is shown, that it is possible to significantly enhance the threshold, introducing the difference of betatron tunes for the head and the tail of a bunch (due to RF quad) comparable with the synchrotron tune
Motivic Milnor fibre for nondegenerate function germs on toric singularities
We study function germs on toric varieties which are nondegenerate for their
Newton diagram. We express their motivic Milnor fibre in terms of their Newton
diagram. We extend a formula for the motivic nearby fibre to the case of a
toroidal degeneration. We illustrate this by some examples.Comment: 14 page
Is the Luttinger liquid a new state of matter?
We are demonstrating that the Luttinger model with short range interaction
can be treated as a type of Fermi liquid. In line with the main dogma of
Landau's theory one can define a fermion excitation renormalized by interaction
and show that in terms of these fermions any excited state of the system is
described by free particles. The fermions are a mixture of renormalized right
and left electrons. The electric charge and chirality of the Landau

A Numerical Treatment of the Rf SQUID: II. Noise Temperature
We investigate rf SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices),
coupled to a resonant input circuit, a readout tank circuit and a preamplifier,
by numerically solving the corresponding Langevin equations and optimizing
model parameters with respect to noise temperature. We also give approximate
analytic solutions for the noise temperature, which we reduce to parameters of
the SQUID and the tank circuit in the absence of the input circuit. The
analytic solutions agree with numerical simulations of the full circuit to
within 10%, and are similar to expressions used to calculate the noise
temperature of dc SQUIDs. The best device performance is obtained when
\beta_L'\equiv 2\pi L I_0\Phi_0 is 0.6 - 0.8; L is the SQUID inductance, I_0
the junction critical current and \Phi_0 the flux quantum. For a tuned input
circuit we find an optimal noise temperature T_{N,opt}\approx 3Tf/f_c, where T,
f and f_c denote temperature, signal frequency and junction characteristic
frequency, respectively. This value is only a factor of 2 larger than the
optimal noise temperatures obtained by approximate analytic theories carried
out previously in the limit \beta_L'<<1. We study the dependence of the noise
temperature on various model parameters, and give examples using realistic
device parameters of the extent to which the intrinsic noise temperature can be

Topological String Amplitudes, Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Spaces and Threshold Corrections
We present the most complete list of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau complete
intersections in toric ambient varieties and develop the methods to solve the
topological string and to calculate higher genus amplitudes on these compact
Calabi-Yau spaces. These symplectic invariants are used to remove redundancies
in examples. The construction of the B-model propagators leads to compatibility
conditions, which constrain multi-parameter mirror maps. For K3 fibered
Calabi-Yau spaces without reducible fibers we find closed formulas for all
genus contributions in the fiber direction from the geometry of the fibration.
If the heterotic dual to this geometry is known, the higher genus invariants
can be identified with the degeneracies of BPS states contributing to
gravitational threshold corrections and all genus checks on string duality in
the perturbative regime are accomplished. We find, however, that the BPS
degeneracies do not uniquely fix the non-perturbative completion of the
heterotic string. For these geometries we can write the topological partition
function in terms of the Donaldson-Thomas invariants and we perform a
non-trivial check of S-duality in topological strings. We further investigate
transitions via collapsing D5 del Pezzo surfaces and the occurrence of free Z2
quotients that lead to a new class of heterotic duals.Comment: 117 pages, 1 Postscript figur
Output spectrum of a detector measuring quantum oscillations
We consider a two-level quantum system (qubit) which is continuously measured
by a detector and calculate the spectral density of the detector output. In the
weakly coupled case the spectrum exhibits a moderate peak at the frequency of
quantum oscillations and a Lorentzian-shape increase of the detector noise at
low frequency. With increasing coupling the spectrum transforms into a single
Lorentzian corresponding to random jumps between two states. We prove that the
Bayesian formalism for the selective evolution of the density matrix gives the
same spectrum as the conventional master equation approach, despite the
significant difference in interpretation. The effects of the detector
nonideality and the finite-temperature environment are also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Low-frequency measurement of the tunneling amplitude in a flux qubit
We have observed signatures of resonant tunneling in an Al three-junction
qubit, inductively coupled to a Nb LC tank circuit. The resonant properties of
the tank oscillator are sensitive to the effective susceptibility (or
inductance) of the qubit, which changes drastically as its flux states pass
through degeneracy. The tunneling amplitude is estimated from the data. We find
good agreement with the theoretical predictions in the regime of their

Study of KS KL Coupled Decays and KL -Be Interactions with the CMD-2 Detector at VEPP-2M Collider
The integrated luminosity about 4000 inverse nanobarn of around phi meson
mass ( 5 millions of phi mesons) has been collected with the CMD-2 detector at
the VEPP-2M collider. A latest analysis of the KS KL coupled decays based on 30
% of available data is presented in this paper.
The KS KL pairs from phi meson decays were reconstructed in the drift chamber
when both kaons decayed into two charged particles. From a sample of 1423
coupled decays a selection of candidates to the CP violating KL into pi+ pi-
decay was performed. CP violating decays were not identified because of the
domination of events with a KL regenerating at the Be beam pipe into KS and a
background from KL semileptonic decays.
The regeneration cross section of 110 MeV/c KL mesons was found to be 53 +-
17 mb in agreement with theoretical expectations. The angular distribution of
KS mesons after regeneration and the total cross section of KL for Be have been

Selective quantum evolution of a qubit state due to continuous measurement
We consider a two-level quantum system (qubit) which is continuously measured
by a detector. The information provided by the detector is taken into account
to describe the evolution during a particular realization of measurement
process. We discuss the Bayesian formalism for such ``selective'' evolution of
an individual qubit and apply it to several solid-state setups. In particular,
we show how to suppress the qubit decoherence using continuous measurement and
