A chemically selective laser ion source has been used in a -decay study
of heavy Ag isotopes into even-even Cd nuclides. Gamma-spectroscopic
techniques in time-resolving event-by-event and multiscaling modes have
permitted the identification of the first 2 and 4 levels in
Cd, Cd, and tentatively the 2 state in
Cd. From a comparison of these new states in Cd with the
and level systematics of Pd and Te
isotopes and several recent model predictions, possible evidence
for a weakening of the spherical neutron-shell below double-magic
Sn is obtained
Progress in ISOL target-ion source systems
The heart of every ISOL (isotope separation on-line) facility is its target and ion source system. Its efficiency, selectivity and rapidity is decisive for the production of intense and pure ion beams of short-lived isotopes. Recent progress in ISOL target and ion source technology is discussed at the examples of radioactive ion beams of exotic zinc and tin isotopes that were purified by isothermal chromatography and molecular sideband separation respectively. An outlook is given to which other elements these purification methods are applicable. © 2008 Elsevier B.V
Search for beta-delayed charged particles from the halo nucleus sup 1 sup 4 Be
In a search for beta-delayed charged particles from sup 1 sup 4 Be we have obtained an upper limit on beta-delayed alpha particles, B(beta alpha)<1.2x10 sup - sup 4 , and found evidence for beta-delayed tritons at intensity of 6x10 sup - sup 5 <B(beta t)<4x10 sup - sup 4 (both at 95% confidence level). By adding information on the beta-delayed neutron branches from direct measurements at low neutron energy and indirect detection via recoiling nuclei at high energy, and by including also information from earlier experiments, we deduce the beta strength distribution from sup 1 sup 4 Be. This differs significantly from shell-model calculations at high excitation energy
Search for beta-delayed charged particles from the halo nucleus Be-14
In a search for beta-delayed charged particles from Be-14 we have obtained an upper limit on beta-delayed a particles, B(betaalpha
Precision measurement of the decay rate of in host materials
A controlled and precise determination of the cross sections of the fusion reactions 7Be(p,gamma)8B and 3He(4He,gamma)7Be, which play an important role in determining the solar neutrino flux, necessitates the knowledge of a precise value of the electron-capture half-life of 7Be. This half-life may depend on the material hosting the 7Be atoms via small modifications of the electron density around the 7Be nucleus. In this brief communication we report on the measurement of 7Be implanted in four materials: copper, aluminum, sapphire, and PVC. The four results are consistent with a null host dependence within two standard deviations and their weighted average of 53.236(39) d agrees very well with the adopted value in the literature, 53.22(6) d. The present results may exhibit a slight (0.22%) increase of the half-life at room temperature for metals compared to insulators that requires further studies
