Approach to Equilibrium of a Nondegenerate Quantum System: Decay of Oscillations and Detailed Balance as Separate Effects of a Reservoir
The approach to equilibrium of a nondegenerate quantum system involves the
damping of microscopic population oscillations, and, additionally, the bringing
about of detailed balance, i.e. the achievement of the correct Boltzmann
factors relating the populations. These two are separate effects of interaction
with a reservoir. One stems from the randomization of phases and the other from
phase space considerations. Even the meaning of the word `phase' differs
drastically in the two instances in which it appears in the previous statement.
In the first case it normally refers to quantum phases whereas in the second it
describes the multiplicity of reservoir states that corresponds to each system
state. The generalized master equation theory for the time evolution of such
systems is here developed in a transparent manner and both effects of reservoir
interactions are addressed in a unified fashion. The formalism is illustrated
in simple cases including in the standard spin-boson situation wherein a
quantum dimer is in interaction with a bath consisting of harmonic oscillators.
The theory has been constructed for application in energy transfer in molecular
aggregates and in photosynthetic reaction centers
Suppression of Conductance in a Topological Insulator Nanostep Junction
We investigate quantum transport via surface states in a nanostep junction on
the surface of a 3D topological insulator that involves two different side
surfaces. We calculate the conductance across the junction within the
scattering matrix formalism and find that as the bias voltage is increased, the
conductance of the nanostep junction is suppressed by a universal factor of 1/3
compared to the conductance of a similar planar junction based on a single
surface of a topological insulator. We also calculate and analyze the Fano
factor of the nanostep junction and predict that the Fano factor saturates at
1/5, five times smaller than for a Poisson process
Magnonic Crystal with Two-Dimensional Periodicity as a Waveguide for Spin Waves
We describe a simple method of including dissipation in the spin wave band
structure of a periodic ferromagnetic composite, by solving the Landau-Lifshitz
equation for the magnetization with the Gilbert damping term. We use this
approach to calculate the band structure of square and triangular arrays of Ni
nanocylinders embedded in an Fe host. The results show that there are certain
bands and special directions in the Brillouin zone where the spin wave lifetime
is increased by more than an order of magnitude above its average value. Thus,
it may be possible to generate spin waves in such composites decay especially
slowly, and propagate especially large distances, for certain frequencies and
directions in -space.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys Rev
Ferromagnetism in Co doped CeO2: observation of giant magnetic moment with a high Curie temperature
Journal ArticleWe report room temperature ferromagnetism in single crystal Ce1−xCoxO2−δ (x≤0.05) films deposited on a LaAlO3(001) substrate. Films were grown by a pulsed laser deposition technique and were thoroughly characterized using x-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy-Z contrast, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, optical transmission spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. These films are transparent in the visible regime and exhibit a very high Curie temperature ~740-875 K with a giant magnetic moment. Our results indicate that the ferromagnetic property is intrinsic to the CeO2 system and is not a result of any secondary magnetic phase or cluster formation
Effect of Micro-Pitting on Gear Vibrations and Dynamic Excitation Source
This paper quantitatively investigates the effect of micro-pitting on Transmission Error (TE) of a pair of spur gears and its correlation with vibrations. Micro-pitting is a gear surface failure phenomenon. It changes the gear profile form. The measured profile form variation can be used to calculate Transmission Error. This paper describes the micro-pitting test rig and profile form variation measurement. Calculation method of Transmission Error from profile form error data has also been presented
Enhancing the significance of gravitational wave bursts through signal classification
The quest to observe gravitational waves challenges our ability to
discriminate signals from detector noise. This issue is especially relevant for
transient gravitational waves searches with a robust eyes wide open approach,
the so called all- sky burst searches. Here we show how signal classification
methods inspired by broad astrophysical characteristics can be implemented in
all-sky burst searches preserving their generality. In our case study, we apply
a multivariate analyses based on artificial neural networks to classify waves
emitted in compact binary coalescences. We enhance by orders of magnitude the
significance of signals belonging to this broad astrophysical class against the
noise background. Alternatively, at a given level of mis-classification of
noise events, we can detect about 1/4 more of the total signal population. We
also show that a more general strategy of signal classification can actually be
performed, by testing the ability of artificial neural networks in
discriminating different signal classes. The possible impact on future
observations by the LIGO-Virgo network of detectors is discussed by analysing
recoloured noise from previous LIGO-Virgo data with coherent WaveBurst, one of
the flagship pipelines dedicated to all-sky searches for transient
gravitational waves
