Bunching of fluxons by the Cherenkov radiation in Josephson multilayers
A single magnetic fluxon moving at a high velocity in a Josephson multilayer
(e.g., high-temperature superconductor such as BSCCO) can emit electromagnetic
waves (Cherenkov radiation), which leads to formation of novel stable dynamic
states consisting of several bunched fluxons. We find such bunched states in
numerical simulation in the simplest cases of two and three coupled junctions.
At a given driving current, several different bunched states are stable and
move at velocities that are higher than corresponding single-fluxon velocity.
These and some of the more complex higher-order bunched states and transitions
between them are investigated in detail.Comment: 6 pages + 6 Figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. B on July 1, 200
Mapping a Continental Shelf and Slope in the 1990s: A Tale of Three Multibeams
Increasing societal pressures on the U.S. continental shelves adjacent to dense population centers have brought to light the lack of accurate base maps in these areas. Existing bathymetric maps and random sidescan sonar surveys are either not accurate enough or do not provide the coverage necessary to make policy decisions. Until the mid 1990s, it was not financially prudent nor technically efficient to map the shallow shelves. However, the availability of high-resolution multibeam mapping systems now allow efficient and accurate mapping of the continental margins. In 1996 the U.S. Geological Survey began a large-scale seafloor mapping campaign on the continental shelf and slope adjacent to Los Angeles, CA. The first survey used a Kongsberg Simrad EM1000 (95 kHz). The survey continued in 1998 by mapping the slope and proximal basins from Newport to Long Beach, CA, using a Kongsberg Simrad EM300 (30 kHz). The area was completed in May 1999 by mapping the entire shelf adjacent to Long Beach, CA using an EM3000D (a dual-headed 300-kHz system). The mapping used both INS from the vehicle motion sensor and DGPS to provide position accuracies of ~1 m. All the data were processed in the field in near realtime using software developed at the Univ. of New Brunswick. Because of the different systems used and the range of water depths, the spatial resolution of the processed data varies from \u3c0.5 m on the inner shelf to 8 m on the basin floors.
Perspective overviews of backscatter draped over bathymetry reveals a host of geological features unknown to exist in this area. These features include shallow, linear gullys, barchan dunes, small-scale bedforms in shallow troughs, major canyon system complexes, large- and smallscale mass movements, faults, and large areas of outcrop. The effects on sediment transport of man-made features, such as sewer outfall pipes and dredge-disposal fields, are clearly delineated on the new maps. The maps provide the fundamental base maps for studies as varied as those involving benthic habitats, marine disposal sites, sediment transport, and tectonic ma
Suppression of dissipation in Nb thin films with triangular antidot arrays by random removal of pinning sites
The depinning current Ic versus applied magnetic field B close to the
transition temperature Tc of Nb thin films with randomly diluted triangular
arrays of antidots is investigated. % Our experiments confirm essential
features in Ic(B) as predicted by Reichhardt and Olson Reichhardt [Phys.Rev. B
76, 094512 (2007)]. % We show that, by introducing disorder into periodic
pinning arrays, Ic can be enhanced. % In particular, for arrays with fixed
density n_p of antidots, an increase in dilution Pd induces an increase in Ic
and decrease of the flux-flow voltage for B>Bp=n_p Phi_0.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Fluxon-semifluxon interaction in an annular long Josephson 0-pi-junction
We investigate theoretically the interaction between integer and half-integer
Josephson vortices (fluxons and semifluxons) in an annular Josephson junction.
Semifluxons usually appear at the 0--boundary where there is a
-discontinuity of the Josephson phase. We study the simplest, but the most
interesting case of one -discontinuity in a loop, which can be created
only artificially. We show that measuring the current-voltage characteristic
after injection of an integer fluxon, one can determine the polarity of a
semifluxon. Depending on the relative polarity of fluxon and semifluxon the
static configuration may be stable or unstable, but in the dynamic state both
configurations are stable. We also calculate the depinning current of
fluxons pinned by an arbitrary fractional vortex.Comment: 8pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR
Transport, magnetic, and structural properties of LaCeMnO thin films. Evidence for hole-doping
Cerium-doped manganite thin films were grown epitaxially by pulsed laser
deposition at C and oxygen pressure Pa and were
subjected to different annealing steps. According to x-ray diffraction (XRD)
data, the formation of CeO as a secondary phase could be avoided for
Pa. However, transmission electron microscopy shows the presence
of CeO nanoclusters, even in those films which appear to be single phase in
XRD. With O annealing, the metal-to-insulator transition temperature
increases, while the saturation magnetization decreases and stays well below
the theoretical value for electron-doped LaCeMnO with mixed
Mn/Mn valences. The same trend is observed with decreasing film
thickness from 100 to 20 nm, indicating a higher oxygen content for thinner
films. Hall measurements on a film which shows a metal-to-insulator transition
clearly reveal holes as dominating charge carriers. Combining data from x-ray
photoemission spectroscopy, for determination of the oxygen content, and x-ray
absorption spectroscopy (XAS), for determination of the hole concentration and
cation valences, we find that with increasing oxygen content the hole
concentration increases and Mn valences are shifted from 2+ to 4+. The
dominating Mn valences in the films are Mn and Mn, and only a
small amount of Mn ions can be observed by XAS. Mn and Ce
XAS signals obtained in surface-sensitive total electron yield mode are
strongly reduced in the bulk-sensitive fluorescence mode, which indicates
hole-doping in the bulk for those films which do show a metal-to-insulator
transition.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
Crossover between different regimes of inhomogeneous superconductivity in planar superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids
We studied experimentally the effect of a stripe-like domain structure in a
ferromagnetic BaFe_{12}O_{19} substrate on the magnetoresistance of a
superconducting Pb microbridge. The system was designed in such a way that the
bridge is oriented perpendicular to the domain walls. It is demonstrated that
depending on the ratio between the amplitude of the nonuniform magnetic field
B_0, induced by the ferromagnet, and the upper critical field H_{c2} of the
superconducting material, the regions of the reverse-domain superconductivity
in the H-T plane can be isolated or can overlap (H is the external magnetic
field, T is temperature). The latter case corresponds to the condition
B_0/H_{c2}<1 and results in the formation of superconductivity above the
magnetic domains of both polarities. We discovered the regime of edge-assisted
reverse-domain superconductivity, corresponding to localized superconductivity
near the edges of the bridge above the compensated magnetic domains. Direct
verification of the formation of inhomogeneous superconducting states and
external-field-controlled switching between normal state and inhomogeneous
superconductivity were obtained by low-temperature scanning laser microscopy.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
Curvature, hybridization, and STM images of carbon nanotubes
The curvature effects in carbon nanotubes are studied analytically as a
function of chirality. The pi-orbitals are found to be significantly
rehybridized in all tubes, so that they are never normal to the tubes' surface.
This results in a curvature induced gap in the electronic band-structure, which
turns out to be larger than previous estimates. The tilting of the pi-orbitals
should be observable by atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy
measurements.Comment: Four pages in revtex format including four epsfig-embedded figures.

Coupling between phonons and intrinsic Josephson oscillations in cuprate superconductors
The recently reported subgap structures observed in the current-voltage
characteristic of intrinsic Josephson junctions in the high-T_c superconductors
Tl_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10+\delta} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} are explained by
the coupling between c-axis phonons and Josephson oscillations. A model is
developed where c-axis lattice vibrations between adjacent superconducting
multilayers are excited by the Josephson oscillations in a resistive junction.
The voltages of the lowest structures correspond well to the frequencies of
longitudinal c-axis phonons with large oscillator strength in the two
materials, providing a new measurement technique for this quantity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revtex, aps, epsf, psfig. submitted to Physical
