    Spatial mapping of hepatitis C prevalence in recent injecting drug users in contact with services.

    In developed countries the majority of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections occur in injecting drug users (IDUs) with prevalence in IDUs often high, but with wide geographical differences within countries. Estimates of local prevalence are needed for planning services for IDUs, but it is not practical to conduct HCV seroprevalence surveys in all areas. In this study survey data from IDUs attending specialist services were collected in 52/149 sites in England between 2006 and 2008. Spatially correlated random-effects models were used to estimate HCV prevalence for all sites, using auxiliary data to aid prediction. Estimates ranged from 14% to 82%, with larger cities, London and the North West having the highest HCV prevalence. The methods used generated robust estimates for each area, with a well-identified spatial pattern that improved predictions. Such models may be of use in other areas of study where surveillance data are sparse

    All Things New: An Analysis of Alfred Gaul’s “A New Heaven and a New Earth”

    These program notes originally accompanied the performance of a vocal piece, “A New Heaven and a New Earth” by English composer Alfred Robert Gaul. The notes provide a brief overview of the historical context of Gaul’s work as well as an examination of classification difficulties that arise when dealing with sacred works of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. They further detail the unique challenges that are inherent in presenting an underperformed musical work. As part of a performing arts research project, these program notes also address the methods of expression and creative process that went into preparing the performance of this vocal selection. The objectives of this research project were to 1) give performers guidance in the performance process for underperformed works, and 2) to provide a concise musicological background of Alfred Gaul’s sacred work, The Holy City. This research project utilized a variety of research techniques to achieve the above objectives, including experience and historical-based research methods drawn from the field of artistic practice

    OVERCOMING COMMUNICATIVE AND CULTURAL BARRIERS: A STUDY OF THE PERCEPTIONS AND INTERACTIONS BETWEEN AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

    Globalization is a central aspect to the developing American society, both vocationally and culturally. Increased international representation on college campuses is one example of the prevalence of globalization in an everyday context. As the rate of international students present on American university campuses increases, more research has been focusing on the experiences of international students. The present study focused on adding to the literature surrounding American students’ perceptions and interactions with international students when communicative and cultural barriers arise. The thesis statement proposed that American students attending an American university who had previous international travel experience would be more adept at interacting positively with international students. While the primary thesis statement was not statistically significant, the amount of time that one had spent abroad was found to be a significant predictor of positive responses for one of the cultural barriers provided in the study. The study’s results allow room for future research to more fully determine what the greatest factors are in American and international student interactions in an American context

    Pulse retrieval and soliton formation in a non-standard scheme for dynamic electromagnetically induced transparency

    We examine in detail an alternative method of retrieving the information written into an atomic ensemble of three-level atoms using electromagnetically induced transparency. We find that the behavior of the retrieved pulse is strongly influenced by the relative collective atom-light coupling strengths of the two relevant transitions. When the collective atom-light coupling strength for the retrieval beam is the stronger of the two transitions, regeneration of the stored pulse is possible. Otherwise, we show the retrieval process can lead to creation of soliton-like pulses.Comment: 11 figure

    Alpha/beta and gamma interferons are induced by infection with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus in vivo

    In contrast to the results of previous in vitro studies, experimental infection of calves with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus (ncpBVDV) was found to induce strong alpha/beta and gamma interferon responses in gnotobiotic animals. These responses were associated with depressed levels of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) in serum. The results of this study indicate that the immunosuppression caused by ncpBVDV is not associated with low interferon responses or elevated levels of TGF-β

    Since the mid-1980s, preventing HIV transmission among people who inject drugs (PWIDs) has been one of the cornerstones of the UK’s response to HIV. The early comprehensive implementation of harm reduction, particularly needle and syringe programmes, has been widely acknowledged as key to a low prevalence of HIV among PWIDs in the UK. However, this harm-reduction strategy was developed to avert an HIV epidemic among people injecting heroin and while the prevalence in this population remains low, it is clear that there are now emerging populations of PWIDs with different patterns of drug use and risks

    Measuring the quantum statistics of an atom laser beam

    We propose and analyse a scheme for measuring the quadrature statistics of an atom laser beam using extant optical homodyning and Raman atom laser techniques. Reversal of the normal Raman atom laser outcoupling scheme is used to map the quantum statistics of an incoupled beam to an optical probe beam. A multimode model of the spatial propagation dynamics shows that the Raman incoupler gives a clear signal of de Broglie wave quadrature squeezing for both pulsed and continuous inputs. Finally, we show that experimental realisations of the scheme may be tested with existing methods via measurements of Glauber's intensity correlation function.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

The Crazyflie 2.1 quad from Bitcraze provides an excellent platform for research and development. In this project, our goal is to perform system identification on the Crazyflie to propose a complete model. A gray box method is explored, which includes leveraging the parameters that are already known, to develop a set of equations. Through theory, simulations, and measurements, a complete quadcopter model is developed
