    MEANS OF METAPHOR TRANSLATION IN THE STORY BERLIN, CITY OF BIRDS BY E. ÖZDAMAR

    The article examines the aspect of metaphor translation from German into Russian in the story Berlin, City of Birds by E. Özdamar, which is done through a cognitive metaphorological approach. It is concerned with the problem of metaphor interpretation as one of the most challenging issues of the theory and practice of translation. The work analyzes metaphor and means of its translation in the framework of conceptual metaphor theory put forward by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson in 1980 and developed further to be applied to a broad range of linguistic phenomena. Metaphor modelling is considered the principal means of conveying the cognitive dominant of the story represented by the two main images of the story, those of Berlin and birds being newcomers to the city. The author employs the metaphor model to depict the city as a motionless photograph that is restored to life due to the advent of birds. The means of metaphor translation include full translation, lexical, morphological and syntactical changes, and omission or addition of lexical units

    Topological constraints on spiral wave dynamics in spherical geometries with inhomogeneous excitability

    We analyze the way topological constraints and inhomogeneity in the excitability influence the dynamics of spiral waves on spheres and punctured spheres of excitable media. We generalize the definition of an index such that it characterizes not only each spiral but also each hole in punctured, oriented, compact, two-dimensional differentiable manifolds and show that the sum of the indices is conserved and zero. We also show that heterogeneity and geometry are responsible for the formation of various spiral wave attractors, in particular, pairs of spirals in which one spiral acts as a source and a second as a sink -- the latter similar to an antispiral. The results provide a basis for the analysis of the propagation of waves in heterogeneous excitable media in physical and biological systems.Comment: 5 pages, 6 Figures, major revisions, accepted for publication in Phys.     Image of Giant in Mythology of Ob Ugrians and Zabolotny Tatars

    The results of a comparative analysis of the images of giants in the mythological traditions of geographically close unrelated peoples — the Ob Ugrians (Khanty and Mansi) and the Zabolotny Tatars are presented in the article. It is noted that the assimilation and leveling of the features of the giants images in original cultures did not occur, despite the fact that the myths of the West Siberian peoples were subjected to processes of mutual influence. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the external features and the origin of mythological characters (giants) with the specifics of the geoclimatic landscapes inhabited by the peoples that form the epic. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that for the first time the genesis, attributes and functions of the mythological heroes of unrelated peoples living in adjacent territories — the Ob Ugrians and the Zabolotny Tatars — are compared. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the image of a giant has significant prospects in the reconstruction of an ethnic cultural space, since, being one of the most archaic characters in myths, at the same time it remains a part of modern cultural consciousness. The author’s vision of the common and unique features of giants as distinctive characters of the Ob-Ugric and Siberian Tatar mythological systems is presented in the article.     Female Demonic Characters in the Myths and Folklore of the Peoples of Western Siberia: Genesis, Functions, Attributes

    The results of a comparative analysis of female demonic characters that exist in the myths and folklore of the peoples of Western Siberia are presented. It is noted that the total assimilation and leveling of the peculiarities of distinctive cultures did not occur, despite the fact that the rituals and myths of the West Siberian peoples were subjected to processes of mutual influence, flow and adaptation for centuries. The relevance of the study is due to the need to study the existing picture both in its integrity and in individual fragments. It is reported that the image of a female witch, a malicious old woman, is found in the myths and tales of most of the peoples living in Western Siberia. The article analyzes the etymology of the names and attributes of female demonic characters: Porne in Khanty mythology, Parne in Nenets mythology, Forest old woman and Albasty among Siberian Tatars, Baba Yaga among Slavs. The authors pay special attention to the commonality of mythological motifs, the similar structure of fairy tales, arising on the basis of demonic images of the feminine type. The possible relationship of these images with totemic representations, common in ancient cultures, is indicated. The question of the correlation of the folklore plot “the boy and the witch” with the ritualism of the West Siberian peoples, in particular, with the rites of birth, initiation, and fire worship, is examined. By comparing the traditions of neighboring cultures, the archetypal nature of the initiation scenario while maintaining its ethnospatial specificity is proved

    Analysis of the English Language Needs of Students at the Russian Technological University

    The article looks into the English language needs of engineering students and young graduates at one of the leading technological universities in Russia - NUST MISiS. The authors used a mixed methodology approach to explore how often and in what real-life situations current and former students use the English language. 107 paper questionnaires were completed by master’s degree students in class and the answers were counted; 123 responses were received online from 2015 and 2016 graduates and processed statistically; 17 structured interviews with college administrators and subject professors were recorded and then coded for the main categories. The results demonstrate that despite dramatic changes at NUST MISiS under The Competitiveness Enhancement Program 5-100, good English competence is not a priority, with the majority of young graduates being ‘unsure’ about its benefits for their career and some administrators calling it ‘the least required competence’. However, the English language needs vary across subject departments. Thus, students majoring in new materials and programming use English on a regular basis, while economists and metallurgists might not really need it in both studies and future job. Overall, the most required skill is reading, and the least used ones are oral communication and academic writing in English. The authors discuss how orientation on potential rather than actual needs can affect the ESP/EAP course design in the context of engineering education in Russia

    Forming of Students Valeological Culture in Studying of Natural-Science Disciplines (by Example of Physics Course)

    The article is devoted to the problem of valeological culture education in the process of studying of natural-science disciplines at school. The importance of developing skills aimed at the development of a healthy lifestyle in the process of realization of intersubject links on the example of studying of a school course of physics is noted. It is shown that in explaining to students the physical laws of nature, phenomena and processes the most appropriate is the use of specific examples, including the area of valeology, which not only broaden pupils’ outlook, but also affect the development of their culture of health. The article focuses on pedagogical techniques, allowing the teacher to develop individual abilities of students and create an atmosphere of success for each student both in the classroom and in extracurricular time in self-preparation for classes. Different forms of work are described that students can fulfill implementing interdisciplinary links between valeology and physics: self-dependent development of physics tasks using valeology material, writing essays, making presentations, preparing reports, making visual teaching aids, etc. It is concluded that this work allows the learner not only to accumulate knowledge about health care, but also to apply them in practice
