Swift J164449.3+573451 event: generation in the collapsing star cluster?
We discuss the multiband energy release in a model of a collapsing galactic
nucleus, and we try to interpret the unique super-long cosmic gamma-ray event
Swift J164449.3+573451 (GRB 110328A by early classification) in this scenario.
Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes can form evolutionary a compact
self-gravitating subsystem in the galactic center. Collisions and merges of
these stellar remnants during an avalanche contraction and collapse of the
cluster core can produce powerful events in different bands due to several
mechanisms. Collisions of neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes can
generate gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) similar to the ordinary models of short GRB
origin. The bright peaks during the first two days may also be a consequence of
multiple matter supply (due to matter release in the collisions) and accretion
onto the forming supermassive black hole. Numerous smaller peaks and later
quasi-steady radiation can arise from gravitational lensing, late accretion of
gas onto the supermassive black hole, and from particle acceleration by shock
waves. Even if this model will not reproduce exactly all the Swift
J164449.3+573451 properties in future observations, such collapses of galactic
nuclei can be available for detection in other events.Comment: 7 pages, replaced by the final versio
Event Reconstruction for a DIRC
Monte Carlo simulations were made for a possible DIRC at the WASA detector at
COSY. A statistical method for pattern recognition is presented and the
possible angle resolution and velocity precision achieved are discussed.Comment: Minor changes in text. Figures updated. accepted by JINS
Noise and vibration from building-mounted micro wind turbines Part 2: Results of measurements and analysis
Description
To research the quantification of vibration from a micro turbine, and to develop a method of prediction of vibration and structure borne noise in a wide variety of installations in the UK.
Objective
The objectives of the study are as follows:
1) Develop a methodology to quantify the amount of source vibration from a building mounted micro wind turbine installation, and to predict the level of vibration and structure-borne noise impact within such buildings in the UK.
2) Test and validate the hypothesis on a statically robust sample size
3) Report the developed methodology in a form suitable for widespread adoption by industry and regulators, and report back on the suitability of the method on which to base policy decisions for a future inclusion for building mounted turbines in the GPDO
Prevalence of intestinal helminth infections among primary school children in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos, Nigeria
Background: Intestinal parasites are among the most common infection of school age-children worldwide and remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children in developing countries. Thus the prevalence and risk factors of intestinal helminth infections was investigated among children in four primary schools in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos, Nigeria.Methodology: A descriptive cross sectional study of one hundred and twenty children, selected using a multistage sampling method. Fecal samples were collected from the pupils and examined microscopically using direct smear and Formol- ether concentration technique. Each child was interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Data was analysed with Epi Info 6.Results: Their ages ranged from 5-19 years and most 63 (52.5%) were female. Thirteen (11%) of the samples were found positive. The two major intestinal helminths identified were Ascaris lumbricoides (76.9%) and Hookworm (15.4%) with a mixed infection of both accounting for 7.7% of the samples. Females (69.2%) were more infected. The socioeconomic status (lower education and having a skilled job)of the parents, female gender, being in a higher class, use of pit latrines and use of well water were found to contribute to the prevalence of intestinal helminth infection, although showed no statistical significant association with the presence of parasites in their stool samples (P > 0.05).Conclusion: There is need to improve sanitation and peoples' living conditions, provide clean water, health education, chemotherapy and encourage good hygiene and healthy habits. Keywords: Prevalence, Helminths, School Children, Lagos, Nigeri
The Accounting Office Interface: Syracuse University
This presentation will discuss Syracuse University Library’s invoice interface with our university’s fund accounting system. Interfacing is the way two independent, automated systems meet and communicate with each other. Our Library is on the NOTIS system, and our acquisitions subsystem has been in place since July, 1991. Our accounting office uses a vendored system from Walker Interactive Products, which handles the accounts payable component of that system. Our acronym for the system is CAPPS, which stands for Computerized Accounts Payable Purchasing System. Prior to July, 1991, we had a locally developed system, which did, indeed, interface with the accounting office as well. We therefore had some previous experience in this area that could be applied to the NOTIS environment, but of course much needed to be modified. We interface with our accounting office on a weekly basis in the areas of invoice payment and vendor input and update. Many of the NOTIS reports that we run, are fairly standard, and as a result it is not necessary to discuss many of them in detail. However, many reports are special to Syracuse University in terms of our interface, and it is on those which we intend to concentrate
Hands-Off Instruction: A Study of the Effectiveness of a Media-Based Library Instruction Module
Georgia College, a four-year senior college in the University System, offers only limited informal library instruction to its students. In the past, with the exception of English 102
classes, it has been offered on an ad hoc basis as individual faculty members have requested it. One justification for the lack of a structured
library orientation program has been the premise, current in the library profession, that the most effective bibliographic instruction is personalized, "hands-on" experience
North Carolina Libraries Face the Depression: A Regional Field Agent and the "Bell Cow" State, 1930-36
Librarians, like other professionals, flatter themselves with the notion that their problems are unique. The generational arrogance that comes with an expanded knowledge base, new technology, and professional respectability often obscures the similarities of their situation with that of their forebears. Thus, with cuts in the serials budgets of most state universities, the closing of big city branches and consolidation of services - all set against the national backdrop of the savings and loans scandal and what is now formally acknowledged as a "recession" - information professionals may forget that librarians in the Great Depression faced comparable challenges
The Male Librarian and the Feminine Image: A Survey of Stereotype, Status, and Gender Perceptions
Although the literature of librarianship is replete with personality studies, which purport to link the psychological characteristics of librarians with problems of stereotype, professional image, professional status, and occupational prestige, most assume that the only negative Image is that associated with the female stereotype. Only rarely have feminist studies challenged the assumptions upon which such claims are based, due to the fact that men's studies in the field have been virtually nonexistent. This article reports the results of a survey of male librarians relating to the existence and nature of the male professional stereotype, and the impact of social expectations and gender-related work issues on the attitudes of male library and information professionals. Because male librarians are rarely studied as men, it was necessary to design an exploratory instrument. Although categorically ranked responses provided indicators of general attitudes towards gender-status issues, open-ended comments revealed a greater diversity of attitudes than had been previously supposed. The study illumines an unexplored area of research in the field, and establishes the need for further qualitative research in the area of gender studies in librarianship
