    Bennet Woodcroft and the value of English patents, 1617-1841

    We examine the potentialities of a new indicator measuring the value of English patents in the period 1617-1841. The indicator is based on the relative visibility of each individual patent in the contemporary technical and legal literature as summarized in Bennet Woodcroft's Reference Index of Patents of Invention. We conclude that the indicator provides a reasonable proxy for the value of patents and that it can be usefully employed to shed light on the timing and scope of innovation during the Industrial Revolution. In particular, our indicator offers a suitable reconciliation between the patent records evidence and the Crafts-Harley view of the Industrial Revolutio

    Patterns of innovation during the Industrial Revolution: A reappraisal using a composite indicator of patent quality

    The distinction between macro- and microinventions is at the core of recent debates on the Industrial Revolution. Yet, the empirical testing of this notion has remained elusive. We address this issue by introducing a new quality indicator for all patents granted in England in the period 1700–1850. The indicator provides the opportunity for a large-scale empirical appraisal of macro- and microinventions. Our findings indicate that macroinventions did not exhibit any specific time-clustering, while microinventions were characterized by clustering behavior. In addition, we also find that macroinventions displayed a labor-saving bias and were mostly introduced by professional engineers. These results suggest that Allen's and Mokyr's views of macroinventions, rather than conflicting, should be regarded as complementary

    TRIS II: search for CMB spectral distortions at 0.60, 0.82 and 2.5 GHz

    With the TRIS experiment we have performed absolute measurements of the sky brightness in a sky circle at δ=+42\delta = +42^{\circ} at the frequencies ν=\nu = 0.60, 0.82 and 2.5 GHz. In this paper we discuss the techniques used to separate the different contributions to the sky emission and give an evaluation of the absolute temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background. For the black-body temperature of the CMB we get: Tcmbth=(2.837±0.129±0.066)KT_{cmb}^{th}=(2.837 \pm 0.129 \pm 0.066)K at ν=0.60\nu=0.60 GHz; Tcmbth=(2.803±0.0510.300+0.430)KT_{cmb}^{th}=(2.803 \pm 0.051 ^{+0.430} _{-0.300})K at ν=0.82\nu=0.82 GHz; Tcmbth=(2.516±0.139±0.284)KT_{cmb}^{th}=(2.516 \pm 0.139 \pm 0.284)K at ν=2.5\nu=2.5 GHz. The first error bar is statistic (1σ\sigma) while the second one is systematic. These results represent a significant improvement with respect to the previous measurements. We have also set new limits to the free-free distortions, 6.3×106<Yff<12.6×106 -6.3 \times 10^{-6} < Y_{ff} < 12.6 \times 10^{-6}, and slightly improved the Bose-Einstein upper limit, μ<6×105|\mu| < 6 \times 10^{-5}, both at 95% confidence level.Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Chemical characterization of biomass fuel particulate deposits and ashes in households of Mt. Everest region (NEPAL)

    During a sampling campaign, carried out during June 2012, inside some traditional households located in four villages (Phakding, Namche, Pangboche and Tukla) of Mt. Everest region in southern part of the central Himalaya (Nepal), particulate matter (PM) depositions and ashes have been collected. Moreover, outdoor PM depositions have also been analyzed. Chemical characterization of PM depositions and ashes for major ions, organic carbon, elemental carbon (EC), metal content and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) allowed identifying, as major contributes to indoor PM, the following sources: biomass burning, cooking and chimney ashes. These sources significantly affect outdoor PM depositions: in-house biomass burning is the major source for outdoor EC and K+ as well as biomass burning and cooking activities are the major sources for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

    The contribution of the Unresolved Extragalactic Radio Sources to the Brightness Temperature of the sky

    The contribution of the Unresolved Extragalactic Radio Sources to the diffuse brightness of the sky was evaluated using the source number - flux measurements available in literature. We first optimized the fitting function of the data based on number counts distribution. We then computed the brightness temperature at various frequencies from 151 MHz to 8440 MHz and derived its spectral dependence. As expected the frequency dependence can be described by a power law with a spectral index γ2.7\gamma \simeq -2.7, in agreement with the flux emitted by the {\it steep spectrum} sources. The contribution of {\it flat spectrum} sources becomes relevant at frequencies above several GHz. Using the data available in literature we improved our knowledge of the brightness of the unresolved extragalactic radio sources. The results obtained have general validity and they can be used to disentangle the various contributions of the sky brightness and to evaluate the CMB temperature.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Phylogenetic comparison of huntingtin homologues reveals the appearance of a primitive polyQ in sea urchin

    Huntingtin is a completely soluble 3,144 amino acid (aa) protein characterized by the presence of an amino-terminal polymorphic polyglutamine (polyQ) tract, whose aberrant expansion causes the progressively neurodegenerative Huntington's disease (HD). Biological evidence indicates that huntingtin (htt) is beneficial to cells (particularly to brain neurons) and that loss of its neuronal function may contribute to HD. The exact protein domains involved in its neuroprotective function are unknown. Evolutionary analyses of htt primary aa have so far been limited to a few species, but its thorough assessment may help to clarify the functions emerging during evolution. We made an extensive comparative analysis of the available htt protein homologues from different organisms along the metazoan phylogenetic tree and defined the presence of 3 different conservative blocks corresponding to human htt aa 1-386 (htt1), 683-1,586 (htt2), and 2,437-3,078 (htt3), in which HEAT (Huntingtin, Elongator factor3, the regulatory A subunit of protein phosphatase 2A, and TOR1) repeats are well conserved. We also describe the cloning and sequencing of sea urchin htt mRNA, the oldest deuterostome homologue so far available. Multiple alignment shows the first appearance of a primitive polyQ in sea urchin, which predates an ancestral polyQ sequence in a nonchordate environment and defines the polyQ characteristic as being typical of the deuterostome branch. The fact that glutamines have conserved positions in deuterostomes and the polyQ size increases during evolution suggests that the protein has a possibly Q-dependent role. Finally, we report an evident relaxing constraint of the N-terminal block in Ciona and drosophilids that correlates with the absence of polyQ and which may indicate that the N-terminal portion of htt has evolved different functions in Ciona and protostome

    Febrile Neutropenia Duration Is Associated with the Severity of Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis in Pediatric Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Recipients

    Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a common complication in pediatric patients receiving al-logeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Frequently, a precise cause cannot be identified, and many factors can contribute to its genesis. Gut microbiota (GM) has been recently linked to many transplant-related complications, and may also play a role in the pathogenesis of FN. Here, we conducted a longitudinal study in pediatric patients receiving HSCT from three centers in Europe profiling their GM during the transplant course, particularly at FN onset. We found that a more stable GM configuration over time is associated with a shorter duration of fever. Moreover, patients with longer lasting fever exhibited higher pre-HSCT levels of Collinsella, Megasphaera, Prevotella and Roseburia and increased proportions of Eggerthella and Akkermansia at the engraftment. These results suggest a possible association of the GM with the genesis and course of FN. Data seem consistent with previous reports on the relationship of a so-called “healthy” GM and the reduction of transplant complications. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the pediatric HSCT setting. Future studies are warranted to define the underling biological mechanisms and possible clinical implications

    Universities are centers of knowledge in our societies and their role when it comes to innovation has become more important over the years. Companies have several reasons to engage in research collaborations with universities, namely to gain access to innovative technologies. University-Industry R&D collaborations are expected to play an important role in regional economies, and to fulfill the industry’s demand for innovative products, technologies and processes. However, the knowledge on what are the potential risks resulting from these collaborations and the risk response strategies to reduce the negative risk impacts and to enhance positive risk impacts is still limited.
