    The Development of the Eocene Platform Carbonates from Wells in the Middle Adriatic Off-Shore Area, Croatia

    In the Middle Adriatic deep off-shore wells the following sedimentary facies exist: fenestral and Charophyte limestone facies (X); facies of foraminiferal wackestone-packstone, ostracod marls and fine grained breccia conglomerate (A); facies of foraminiferal packstone-grainstone (B) and miliolidal mudstone-wackestone (C); facies of porous limestone?, grainstone? (Y); facies of fossiliferous mudstone-packstone (D); algal boundstone/bindstone and wackestone facies (E); facies of the foraminiferal mudstone-packstone (F); Nummulites-Discocyclina floatstone-packstone and grainstone-rudstone facies (G). The sediments were deposited close to the carbonate platform margin. Beds of facies X have an uncertain stratigraphic position; younger than the Cretaceous but older than the Cuisian. A transgressive sequence that is composed of facies A, B, C and Y was formed during the Cuisian, whereas the others belong to Lutetian (and Biarritzian). At the end of the Middle Eocene they were tectonically compressed and covered by flysch deposits. Good stratigraphic correlation between the wells along the Dinaric strike strongly suggests that the facies are laterally extensive in this direction. Perpendicular to the trend they are considerably reduced. Oil shows in the Kate-1 well originated from the Lower Cretaceous source rocks (evaporite complex)

    Superconducting properties of the In-substituted topological crystalline insulator, SnTe

    We report detailed investigations of the properties of a superconductor obtained by substituting In at the Sn site in the topological crystalline insulator (TCI), SnTe. Transport, magnetization and heat capacity measurements have been performed on crystals of Sn0.6_{0.6}In0.4_{0.4}Te, which is shown to be a bulk superconductor with TconsetT_c^{\rm{onset}} at 4.70(5)\sim4.70(5)~K and TczeroT_c^{\rm{zero}} at 3.50(5)\sim3.50(5)~K. The upper and lower critical fields are estimated to be μ0Hc2(0)=1.42(3)\mu_0H_{c2}(0)=1.42(3)~T and μ0Hc1(0)=0.90(3)\mu_0H_{c1}(0)=0.90(3)~mT respectively, while κ=56.4(8)\kappa=56.4(8) indicates this material is a strongly type II superconductor

    The Role of Palaeogene Clastics in the Tectonic Interpretation of Northern Dalmatia (Southern Croatia)

    The Palaeogene coarse-grained clastics of Northern Dalmatia (Jelar breccia, Promina deposits and Flysch) are syntectonic deposits related to the structural evolution of the Dinaride Thrust Belt. The Jelar breccia is a proximal sedimentary unit deposited in response to early compression of the carbonate platform (Lutetian to Bartonian). Flysch deposits are considered as their distal equivalents. The Early Jelar breccia displays a blended clast composition related to the simultaneous erosion of various carbonate stratigraphic units along the Early Velebit Fault. The Late Jelar breccia, the next tectonically generated deposit, has an inverted clast composition related to the erosion of the faulted Velebit anticline. The next tectonic phase (Bartonian to possibly Oligocene) caused folding and thrusting of underlying platform carbonates and tectonic transport, cannibalisation and reworking of the existing Flysch, Early and Late Jelar breccias. Continuing compression created a new elongated foreland basin with NW-SE extension, filled with about 2000 m of prograding Promina deposits. The final structural setting of Northern Dalmatia was the result of thrusting of the northeast edge of the Promina deposits. This produced duplexing of internal thrusts, uplift of the Promina deposits on the highest topographic position and significant erosion. This polyphase and complex tectonism can be described by a thin skin tectonic model in which Upper Jurassic - Lower Cretaceous platform anhydrites acted as a perfect gliding surface

    Extreme Sensitivity of Superconductivity to Stoichiometry in FeSe (Fe1+dSe)

    The recently discovered iron arsenide superconductors, which display superconducting transition temperatures as high as 55 K, appear to share a number of general features with high-Tc cuprates, including proximity to a magnetically ordered state and robustness of the superconductivity in the presence of disorder. Here we show that superconductivity in Fe1+dSe, the parent compound of the superconducting arsenide family, is destroyed by very small changes in stoichiometry. Further, we show that non-superconducting Fe1+dSe is not magnetically ordered down to low temperatures. These results suggest that robust superconductivity and immediate instability against an ordered magnetic state should not be considered as intrinsic characteristics of iron-based superconducting systems, and that Fe1+dSe may present a unique opportunity for determining which materials characteristics are critical to the existence of superconductivity in high Tc iron arsenide superconductors and which are not.Comment: Updated to reflect final version and include journal referenc

    Ganga and Yamuna Rivers: Through the Lens of the National Green Tribunal

    Despite the country’s extensive environmental jurisprudence and many historic rulings in which the courts have rescued worsening environmental situations, river (Ganga and Yamuna) water does not match the mandated minimum “bathing quality.” Rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna, which flow through numerous states and towns, would be in a different situation. Without strict monitoring and enforcement of the measures, no action plan can work. Punishment of defaulters can serve as deterrence while also instilling fear in other non-compliant enterprises. In comparison to environmental legislation, the NGT Act allows for substantially harsher fines and penalties. River rejuvenation plans must be carefully monitored to ensure that they do not suffer the same fate. Making action plans will not improve river water quality unless they are implemented with sincerity and consistency, as well as continuous monitoring and severe enforcement

    A Cooperative Control Framework For Haptic Guidance Of Bimanual Surgical Tasks Based On Learning From Demonstration

    Whilst current minimally invasive surgical robots offer many advantages to the surgeon, most of them are still controlled using the traditional master-slave approach, without fully exploiting the complementary strengths of both the human user and the robot. This paper proposes a framework that provides a cooperative control approach to human-robot interaction. Typical teleoperation is enhanced by incorporating haptic guidance-based feedback for surgical tasks, which are demonstrated to and learned by the robot. Safety in the surgical scene is maintained during reproduction of the learned tasks by including the surgeon in the guided execution of the learned task at all times. Continuous Hidden Markov Models are used for task learning, real-time learned task recognition and generating setpoint trajectories for haptic guidance. Two different surgical training tasks were demonstrated and encoded by the system, and the framework was evaluated using the Raven II surgical robot research platform. The results indicate an improvement in user task performance with the haptic guidance in comparison to unguided teleoperation

    Patterns and trends of utilization of incretin-based medicines between 2008 and 2014 in three Italian geographic areas

    Background: The incretin-based medicines GLP1 analogues (GLP1a) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) are hypoglycaemic agents licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although these drugs possess comparable efficacy and low risk of hypoglycaemia, differences in terms of route of administration (subcutaneous versus oral), effect on body weight and gastrointestinal tolerabily can impact their actual use in clinical practice. This study aimed to describe the real-world utilization of incretin-based medicines in the Italian clinical practice. Methods: A multi-database, population-based, descriptive, cohort study was performed using administrative data collected between 2008 and 2014 from three Italian geographic areas. Subjects aged 6518 were selected. New users were defined as those with 651 dispensing of GLP1a or DPP4i during the year of interest and none in the past. Trends of cumulative annual incidence of use in the general adult population were observed. New users of GLP1a or DPP4i were respectively described in terms of demographic characteristics and use of antidiabetic drugs during 1 year before and after the first incretin dispensing. Results: The overall study population included 4,943,952 subjects. A total of 7357 new users of GLP1a and 41,907 of DPP4i were identified during the study period. Incidence of use increased between 2008 (0.2\u2030 for both GLP1a and DPP4i) and 2011 (GLP1a = 0.6\u2030; DPP4i = 2.5\u2030) and slightly decreased thereafter. In 2014, 61% of new GLP1a users received once-daily liraglutide while 52% of new DPP4i users received metformin/DPP4i in fixed-dose. The percentage of new DPP4i users older than 65 years of age increased from 30.9 to 62.6% during the study period. Around 12% of new users had not received any antidiabetic before starting an incretin. Conclusions: During the study period, DPP4i rapidly became the most prescribed incretin-based medicine, particularly among older new user. The choice of the specific incretin-based medicine at first prescription appeared to be directed towards those with higher convenience of use (e.g. oral DPP4i rather than subcutaneous GLP1a, once-daily liraglutide rather than twice-daily exenatide). The non-negligibile use of incretin-based medicines as first-line pharmacotherapy for T2DM warrants further effectiveness and safety evaluations to better define their place in therapy

    Geologic reconnaissance of the island of Velika Palagruža (central Adriatic, Croatia)

    Velika Palagruža (Pelagosa) is the largest island of the Palagruža archipelago (central Adriatic Sea, Croatia). Despite its minute size the island bears a certain geological interest being the only exposed piece of land in the central part (Mid-Adriatic ridge) of the common Adriatic foreland of the Apenninic and the Dinaridic orogenic domains. The litho-, bio-, and chemostratigraphic (strontium and sulphur isotopes) characteristics of the sedimentary units, along with tectono-structural and geomorphic characteristics of the island, are described in this paper. The oldest Žalo unit is composed of highly deformed siliciclastics containing gypsum, and carbonates of Middle Triassic (Ladinian) age. This unit represents a transitional fl uvial-to-shallow marine, occasionally evaporitic environment, typical of the Middle Triassic rifting phase of the Adriatic microplate. Soft and strongly deformed Žalo unit deposits are found along a probably still active, WNW&ndash;ESE striking, subvertical, oblique-slip fault that crosses the entire length of the island. The Žalo unit is probably in diapiric contact with the Lanterna unit, poorly defi ned as Late Triassic, and characterized by dolomite with chert and dolomite breccia, presumably deposited in a transitional platform-to-basin environment of an evolving Adriatic basin. The Lanterna unit deposits are capped by Miocene biocalcarenites of the Salamandrija unit over an almost perpendicular discordance, possibly representing an unconformity, suggesting that an early deformational phase preceded a Miocene marine transgression. Talus, landslide deposits, and humic soil make up the cover of the bedrock sedimentary succession, and they represent the ultimate phase of emersion of the island, which probably occurred during Pliocene(?) to Quaternary times. An active neotectonic regime of the central Adriatic is evidenced by present-day seismicity, while recent uplifting of the island is shown by the presence of remnants of pebbly palaeobeach deposits, marine (erosional) straths, and cyanobacterial supratidal encrustations (pelagosite) currently observed at various elevations above mean sea level. </span

    Covid-19 patient management in outpatient setting: A population-based study from southern italy

    Evidence on treatments for early-stage COVID-19 in outpatient setting is sparse. We explored the pattern of use of drugs prescribed for COVID-19 outpatients’ management in Southern Italy in the period February 2020–January 2021. This population-based cohort study was conducted using COVID-19 surveillance registry from Caserta Local Health Unit, which was linked to claims databases from the same catchment area. The date of SARS-CoV-2 infection diagnosis was the index date (ID). We evaluated demographic and clinical characteristics of the study drug users and the pattern of use of drugs prescribed for outpatient COVID-19 management. Overall, 40,030 patients were included in the analyses, with a median (IQR) age of 44 (27–58) years. More than half of the included patients were asymptomatic at the ID. Overall, during the study period, 720 (1.8%) patients died due to COVID-19. Azithromycin and glucocorticoids were the most frequently prescribed drugs, while oxygen was the less frequently prescribed therapy. The cumulative rate of recovery from COVID-19 was 84.2% at 30 days from ID and it was lower among older patients. In this study we documented that the drug prescribing patterns for COVID-19 treatment in an outpatient setting from Southern Italy was not supported from current evidence on beneficial therapies for early treatment of COVID-19, thus highlighting the need to implement strategies for improving appropriate drug prescribing in general practice
