Moving through a dappled world: the aesthetics of shade and shadow in place

In addressing geography’s neglect of shade and shadow, this paper explores how the dynamic play of shadow and light constitutes an integral part of everyday affective and sensory attunement to place and guides pedestrian movement. First, we identify how particular shadows are shaped by distinctive kinds of solar radiance, material forms, human visual perception and cultural representations. We then consider the different cultural ways in which shade and shadow have been interpreted across space and time and identify diverse shadowy effects in different geographical contexts. Thereafter, we focus on particular key elements of central Melbourne’s shadow aesthetics, discuss how patterns of shade guide urban choreographies, and explore how architects have imaginatively manipulated shadow

Reflexivity, the picturing of selves, the forging of methods

This paper addresses alternative models for a reflexive methodology and examines the ways in which doctoral students have appropriated these texts in their theses. It then considers the indeterminate qualities of those appropriations. The paper offers a new account of reflexivity as 'picturing', drawing analogies from the interpretation of two very different pictures, by Velázquez and Tshibumba. It concludes with a more open and fluid account of reflexivity, offering the notion of 'signature', and drawing on the work of Gell and also Deleuze and Guattari in relation to the inherently specific nature of 'concepts' situated in space and time

Depuis longtemps, les histoires de pirates font partie de la littérature et de l'imaginaire. Mais, en ce début de xxie siècle, elles reviennent au devant de la scène, dans les discussions politiques et à la une des journaux. Certains pirates modernes ressemblent à leurs homologues d'antan. Opérant dans l'océan Indien, au large des côtes somaliennes, ils disposent d'embarcations rapides et puissamment armées. Leurs opérations navales correspondent bien à la définition juridique de la piraterie telle qu'elle est donnée par l'article 101 de la convention des Nations unies sur le droit de la mer. Un autre " piratage " défraie aussi la chronique, mais il s'avère plus difficile à cerner. Il ne concerne plus des biens matériels, mais des films, des logiciels et des musiques sous forme numérique.
