Thermal Decomposition and Combustion of γ-irradiated Polyamide 6 Containing Phosphorus Oxynitride or Phospham
Polyamide 6 (PA-6) containing the fire retardants phosphorus oxynitride ((PON)m) or phospham ((PN2H)n) was exposed to 60Co-γ-rays (absorbed dose: 1.0–4.0 MGy). The irradiation led to crosslinking of the polymer which caused an increase in the char yield and a decrease in the flammability of the polymer. The combustion behavior was strongly affected by irradiation: dripping was totally prevented in the case of system PA-6/(PN2H)n and strongly retarded in the case of system PA-6/(PON)m. The thermal stability of the system PA-6/(PN2H)n decreased with increasing absorbed dose whereas the thermal stability of the system PA-6/(PON)m did not change
Entanglement of macroscopic test masses and the Standard Quantum Limit in laser interferometry
We show that the generation of entanglement of two heavily macroscopic
mirrors with masses of up to several kilograms are feasible with state of the
art techniques of high-precision laser interferometry. The basis of such a
demonstration would be a Michelson interferometer with suspended mirrors and
simultaneous homodyne detections at both interferometer output ports. We
present the connection between the generation of entanglement and the Standard
Quantum Limit (SQL) for a free mass. The SQL is a well-known reference limit in
operating interferometers for gravitational-wave detection and provides a
measure of when macroscopic entanglement can be observed in the presence of
realistic decoherence processes

Equine or porcine synovial fluid as a novel ex vivo model for the study of bacterial free-floating biofilms that form in human joint infections
Bacterial invasion of synovial joints, as in infectious or septic arthritis, can be difficult to treat in both veterinary and human clinical practice. Biofilms, in the form of free-floating clumps or aggregates, are involved with the pathogenesis of infectious arthritis and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Infection of a joint containing an orthopedic implant can additionally complicate these infections due to the presence of adherent biofilms. Because of these biofilm phenotypes, bacteria within these infected joints show increased antimicrobial tolerance even at high antibiotic concentrations. To date, animal models of PJI or infectious arthritis have been limited to small animals such as rodents or rabbits. Small animal models, however, yield limited quantities of synovial fluid making them impractical for in vitro research. Herein, we describe the use of ex vivo equine and porcine models for the study of synovial fluid induced biofilm aggregate formation and antimicrobial tolerance. We observed Staphylococcus aureus and other bacterial pathogens adapt the same biofilm aggregate phenotype with significant antimicrobial tolerance in both equine and porcine synovial fluid, analogous to human synovial fluid. We also demonstrate that enzymatic dispersal of synovial fluid aggregates restores the activity of antimicrobials. Future studies investigating the interaction of bacterial cell surface proteins with host synovial fluid proteins can be readily carried out in equine or porcine ex vivo models to identify novel drug targets for treatment of prevention of these difficult to treat infectious diseases
Quantum-Dense Metrology
Quantum metrology utilizes entanglement for improving the sensitivity of
measurements. Up to now the focus has been on the measurement of just one out
of two non-commuting observables. Here we demonstrate a laser interferometer
that provides information about two non-commuting observables, with
uncertainties below that of the meter's quantum ground state. Our experiment is
a proof-of-principle of quantum dense metrology, and uses the additional
information to distinguish between the actual phase signal and a parasitic
signal due to scattered and frequency shifted photons. Our approach can be
readily applied to improve squeezed-light enhanced gravitational-wave detectors
at non-quantum noise limited detection frequencies in terms of a sub shot-noise
veto-channel.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; includes supplementary material
Effectiveness and Overall Safety of NutropinAq (R) for Growth Hormone Deficiency and Other Paediatric Growth Hormone Disorders: Completion of the International Cooperative Growth Study, NutropinAq (R) European Registry (iNCGS)
Objective: The International Cooperative Growth Study, NutropinAq® European Registry (iNCGS) (NCT00455728) monitored long-term safety and effectiveness of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH; NutropinAq® [somatropin]) in paediatric growth disorders.
Methods: Open-label, non-interventional, post-marketing surveillance study recruiting children with growth disorders. Endpoints included gain in height standard deviation score (SDS), adult height, and occurrence of adverse events (AEs).
Results: 2792 patients were enrolled. 2082 patients (74.6%) had growth hormone deficiency (GHD), which was isolated idiopathic in 1825 patients (87.7%). Non-GHD diagnoses included Turner syndrome (TS) (n=199), chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) (n=10), other non-GHD (n=498), and missing data for three participants. Improvements from baseline height SDS occurred at all time points to Month 132, and in all subgroups by disease aetiology. At Month 12, mean (95% CI) change in height SDS by aetiology was: idiopathic GHD 0.63 (0.61;0.66), organic GHD 0.71 (0.62;0.80), TS 0.59 (0.53; 0.65), CRI 0.54 (-0.49;1.56), and other non-GHD 0.64 (0.59;0.69). Mean height ( ± SD) at the last visit among the 235 patients with adult or near-adult height recorded was 154.0 cm ( ± 8.0) for girls and 166.7 cm ( ± 8.0) for boys. The most frequent biological and clinical non-serious drug-related AEs were increased insulin-like growth factor concentrations (314 events) and injection site haematoma (99 events). Serious AEs related to rhGH according to investigators were reported (n=30); the most frequent were scoliosis (4 events), epiphysiolysis (3 events), and strabismus (2 events).
Conclusions: There was an improvement in mean height SDS in all aetiology subgroups after rhGH treatment. No new safety concerns were identified
Tissue Tropism in Host Transcriptional Response to Members of the Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex.
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most common infectious disease of beef and dairy cattle and is characterized by a complex infectious etiology that includes a variety of viral and bacterial pathogens. We examined the global changes in mRNA abundance in healthy lung and lung lesions and in the lymphoid tissues bronchial lymph node, retropharyngeal lymph node, nasopharyngeal lymph node and pharyngeal tonsil collected at the peak of clinical disease from beef cattle experimentally challenged with either bovine respiratory syncytial virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine viral diarrhea virus, Mannheimia haemolytica or Mycoplasma bovis. We identified signatures of tissue-specific transcriptional responses indicative of tropism in the coordination of host's immune tissue responses to infection by viral or bacterial infections. Furthermore, our study shows that this tissue tropism in host transcriptional response to BRD pathogens results in the activation of different networks of response genes. The differential crosstalk among genes expressed in lymphoid tissues was predicted to be orchestrated by specific immune genes that act as 'key players' within expression networks. The results of this study serve as a basis for the development of innovative therapeutic strategies and for the selection of cattle with enhanced resistance to BRD
Experimental characterization of frequency dependent squeezed light
We report on the demonstration of broadband squeezed laser beams that show a
frequency dependent orientation of the squeezing ellipse. Carrier frequency as
well as quadrature angle were stably locked to a reference laser beam at
1064nm. This frequency dependent squeezing was characterized in terms of noise
power spectra and contour plots of Wigner functions. The later were measured by
quantum state tomography. Our tomograph allowed a stable lock to a local
oscillator beam for arbitrary quadrature angles with one degree precision.
Frequency dependent orientations of the squeezing ellipse are necessary for
squeezed states of light to provide a broadband sensitivity improvement in
third generation gravitational wave interferometers. We consider the
application of our system to long baseline interferometers such as a future
squeezed light upgraded GEO600 detector.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Waveguide grating mirror in a fully suspended 10 meter Fabry-Perot cavity
We report on the first demonstration of a fully suspended 10m Fabry-Perot
cavity incorporating a waveguide grating as the coupling mirror. The cavity was
kept on resonance by reading out the length fluctuations via the
Pound-Drever-Hall method and employing feedback to the laser frequency. From
the achieved finesse of 790 the grating reflectivity was determined to exceed
99.2% at the laser wavelength of 1064\,nm, which is in good agreement with
rigorous simulations. Our waveguide grating design was based on tantala and
fused silica and included a ~20nm thin etch stop layer made of Al2O3 that
allowed us to define the grating depth accurately during the fabrication
process. Demonstrating stable operation of a waveguide grating featuring high
reflectivity in a suspended low-noise cavity, our work paves the way for the
potential application of waveguide gratings as mirrors in high-precision
interferometry, for instance in future gravitational wave observatories
Keck-Nirspec Infrared OH Lines: Oxygen Abundances in Metal-Poor Stars Down to [Fe/H] = -2.9
Infrared OH lines at 1.5 - 1.7 um in the H band were obtained with the
NIRSPEC high-resolution spectrograph at the 10m Keck Telescope for a sample of
seven metal-poor stars. Detailed analyses have been carried out, based on
optical high-resolution data obtained with the FEROS spectrograph at ESO.
Stellar parameters were derived by adopting infrared flux method effective
temperatures, trigonometric and/or evolutionary gravities and metallicities
from FeII lines. We obtain that the sample stars with metallicities [Fe/H] <
