    Recurrent flow analysis in spatiotemporally chaotic 2-dimensional Kolmogorov flow

    Motivated by recent success in the dynamical systems approach to transitional flow, we study the efficiency and effectiveness of extracting simple invariant sets (recurrent flows) directly from chaotic/turbulent flows and the potential of these sets for providing predictions of certain statistics of the flow. Two-dimensional Kolmogorov flow (the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with a sinusoidal body force) is studied both over a square [0, 2{\pi}]2 torus and a rectangular torus extended in the forcing direction. In the former case, an order of magnitude more recurrent flows are found than previously (Chandler & Kerswell 2013) and shown to give improved predictions for the dissipation and energy pdfs of the chaos via periodic orbit theory. Over the extended torus at low forcing amplitudes, some extracted states mimick the statistics of the spatially-localised chaos present surprisingly well recalling the striking finding of Kawahara & Kida (2001) in low-Reynolds-number plane Couette flow. At higher forcing amplitudes, however, success is limited highlighting the increased dimensionality of the chaos and the need for larger data sets. Algorithmic developments to improve the extraction procedure are discussed

    Do Professions Represent Competence for Entry-to-Practice in Similar Ways? An Exploration of Competence Frameworks through Document Analysis

    Professional accrediting and regulating bodies are increasingly trying to delineate the knowledge and skills needed for entry-to-practice for quality assurance and international labor mobility. The purpose of this study was to com-pare how professions describe and represent competence. Current, publicly accessible Canadian entry-to-practice competence frameworks for ten professions (Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Psychology, Social Work, Teaching, Engineering, Law, and Planning) were analyzed through content and inductive thematic analysis. Findings revealed that although professions describe similar core competencies across technical and intrinsic domains, systematic differences exist in the architectures of the frameworks. Professions with ‘meta-competencies’ describe competence as being more integrated/holistic. Whereas professions without meta-competencies describe competence as either behavioral-/performance-like lists of ‘attributes’ or groups of knowledge, skills, and ethical/professional values. How competence is represented within frameworks has implications for how professional education programs conceptualize competence and subsequently design and enact curricula, teaching and learning opportunities, and systems of assessment

    : Mobile phone is a source of potentially harmful radiation. The form of signals in two radiation field, the near magnetic field and the remote magnetic field. This research is quantitative, with a cross-sectional approach. The results of the study, the highest standby electromagnetic waves is BlackBerry smartphone, while lowest one is the Samsung. At the calling modes, highest is Blackberry and Nokia and the lowest one is Samsung. At the receiving modes the biggest wave is Blackberry, lowest is Samsung. Based on the results of the ANOVA test it was found that there is a significant difference (p = 0.003, p 0.05). Therefore, no difference statistically and required further analysis (post-hoc) to test the Least Significant Difference (LSD) or the Least Significance difference (LSD). There is a significant difference between the top of the electromagnetic wave smartphone brands Samsung, Nokia, and Blackberry at the time of call. While all four brands of smartphones is apparently the difference electromagnetic waves of the Samsung and Nokia with significant difference (p = 0.001), followed by the differences between the Samsung and Blackberry (p = 0.002). It can also take a look at the difference in the mean difference of the four brands of electromagnetic waves where the average difference between Nokia and Samsung is the smallest (-4.035), followed by the difference between the Samsung with Blackberry (-4.001)

    Can realistic nuclear interactions tolerate a resonant tetraneutron ?

    The possible existence of four-neutron resonances close to the physical energy region is explored. Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations have been solved in configuration space using realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction models. Complex Scaling and Analytical Continuation in the Coupling Constant methods were used to follow the resonance pole trajectories, which emerge out of artificially bound tetraneutron states. The final pole positions for four-neutron states lie in the third energy quadrant with negative real energy parts and should thus not be physically observable.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figs, 2 tables.     A Slowly Precessing Disk in the Nucleus of M31 as the Feeding Mechanism for a Central Starburst

    We present a kinematic study of the nuclear stellar disk in M31 at infrared wavelengths using high spatial resolution integral field spectroscopy. The spatial resolution achieved, FWHM = 0."12 (0.45 pc at the distance of M31), has only previously been equaled in spectroscopic studies by space-based long-slit observations. Using adaptive optics-corrected integral field spectroscopy from the OSIRIS instrument at the W. M. Keck Observatory, we map the line-of-sight kinematics over the entire old stellar eccentric disk orbiting the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at a distance of r<4 pc. The peak velocity dispersion is 381+/-55 km/s , offset by 0.13 +/- 0.03 from the SMBH, consistent with previous high-resolution long-slit observations. There is a lack of near-infrared (NIR) emission at the position of the SMBH and young nuclear cluster, suggesting a spatial separation between the young and old stellar populations within the nucleus. We compare the observed kinematics with dynamical models from Peiris & Tremaine (2003). The best-fit disk orientation to the NIR flux is [θl\theta_l, θi\theta_i, θa\theta_a] = [-33 +/- 4∘^{\circ}, 44 +/- 2∘^{\circ}, -15 +/- 15∘^{\circ}], which is tilted with respect to both the larger-scale galactic disk and the best-fit orientation derived from optical observations. The precession rate of the old disk is ΩP\Omega_P = 0.0 +/- 3.9 km/s/pc, lower than the majority of previous observations. This slow precession rate suggests that stellar winds from the disk will collide and shock, driving rapid gas inflows and fueling an episodic central starburst as suggested in Chang et al.     Conceptualisations of childhood in Namibia: new legislation versus public perception

    BACKGROUND: Namibia is in the process of developing new children's legislation. The aim of this research paper is to explore how the public conceptualisation of childhood in Namibia compares to provisions in the Child Care and Protection Bill (April 2010 draft). METHOD: A qualitative methodological approach was used to explore participants’ conceptualisations of childhood in Namibia. Detailed interviews were conducted with four community members aged 23-75 years. Interviewee one was a 23- year old Oshiwambo male; interviewee two was a 38-year old Damara/Nama female; interviewee three was a 42- year old white female age and interviewee four was a 75-year old white male. Using the data collected, thematic analysis was used to formulate themes within the data. RESULTS: The main themes identified were the role of the state versus the role of parents in childhood, the participation of children in decision-making and the protection of children. The results show that whilst public opinion and the proposals in the bill overlap in some areas such as the need to protect children, in many areas public opinion and the proposals in the bill differ to a great extent. Differences are particularly noticeable for issues such as parental authority versus parental responsibility and child participation. CONCLUSION: At present the conceptualisation of childhood envisaged by the new legislation goes beyond public understanding of childhood. Government and stakeholders should do more to prepare the public for the bill to ensure that the Act is well-received in Namibia

    Perceived childhood exposure to domestic violence: The risk for adult revictimisation

    The prevalence of domestic violence is described as pervasive with a majority of victims being females and perpetrators being males. Often females who experienced domestic violence had been previously exposed to family violence during childhood. The aim of the study was therefore to investigate the perceived childhood exposure to domestic violence as a predisposing factor for revictimisation in adulthood. The study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional correlation design. The sample consisted of 77 female participants from shelters across Cape Town, Western Cape. The study employed an adapted version of the Child Exposure to Domestic Violence (CEDV) Scale. The questionnaire was divided into three sections, namely demographic details, types of exposure to domestic violence the adult may have experienced as a child, and current adult experiences of domestic violence. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences V21 (SPSS). Results suggest that there is a significant positive relationship between past perceived experiences of domestic violence and present perceived experiences of domestic violence. Limitations and recommendations are stipulated for proposed intervention strategies and further study expansion on this topic
