In 1931, Elías Castelnuovo visits the URSS and, the following year, he writes a series of Chronicles on his travel experiences in journalistic media linked to the Argentine Communist Party. During 1932, he compiles and modifies these chronicles; he writes new ones and publishes Yo vi…! ...en Rusia. Consequently, a debate arises in the pages of the magazine Actualidad, in which some of those chronicles had circulated in the first place, regarding the ideological perspective of their author, his theoretical education, the figure of Stalin and the “sexual morality”. Castelnuovo actually participates in the debate in 1933 with the publishing of Rusia Soviética, a second volume to his travel chronicles. The analysis of these chronicles and the controversy that they raised allows for noticing the inflections of Elías Castelnuovo’s poetics –in which irony and humor take on a fundamental role– as well as the tensions in the left of the time, on literary, cultural and political aspects.
The narrative by Elías Castelnuovo is considered by mainstream literary critique (Portantiero 1961; Giordano 1980 [1968]; Romano 1981; Sarlo 1988; Saítta 2008) as the one that better exhibits the characteristics of the cultural and political project of the Boedo group, by manifesting strong populist and naturalistic traits that seek to offer a “compassionate view of the working class” and generate “horror”. Notwithstanding this, a re-reading of his fictional texts and his essays published in the magazine Los Pensadores, one of the most important publications of the group, enables a reconsideration of these conclusions and to admit that, in many ways, the peculiarities and the objectives of Castelnuovo’s literature oppose the main conclusions majorly arrived to by literary critique.
Preparation and evaluation of chitosan-hydrophobic silica composite microspheres: Role of hydrophobic silica in modifying their properties
International audienceBiodegradable microspheres used as controlled release systems are important in pharmaceutics. Chitosan biopolymer represents an attractive alternative to other biomaterials because of its significant physicochemical and biological behaviors. Chitosan microspheres are expected to become promising carrier systems for drug and vaccine delivery, especially via oral, mucosal and transdermal routes. Controlling the swelling rate and swelling capacity of the hydrogel and improving the fragile nature of microspheres under acidic conditions are the key challenges that need to be overcome to allow the use of chitosan microspheres for controlled or sustained release specially via these non-invasive administration routes. There have been many studies on the modification of chitosan microsphere structures with cross-linkers, blends with various kinds of polymers and new organic-inorganic hybrid systems in order to obtain some improved properties. In this work, microspheres composed of chitosan and nanosized hydrophobic silica commercialized under the name Aerosil R972 were generated by a method consisting of two steps: first, preparation of a macroscopically homogeneous chitosan-hydrophobic silica dispersion by an optimized procedure, and then drying. Spray drying was the technique used here. FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and high resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the microspheres, besides acid stability, moisture sorption capacity, release properties and biological assays. The chitosan-hydrophobic silica composite microspheres showed improved thermal degradation, lower water affinity, better acid stability and ability to retard rifampicin (drug model) release under simulated gastric conditions. In vitro biocompatibility studies indicated low cytotoxicity and low capacity to activate cell production of the pro-inflammatory mediator nitric oxide, encouraging further studies on the use of the new chitosan-hydrophobic silica composite microspheres as drug carrier systems via oral or nasal routes

QuickSel: Quick Selectivity Learning with Mixture Models
Estimating the selectivity of a query is a key step in almost any cost-based
query optimizer. Most of today's databases rely on histograms or samples that
are periodically refreshed by re-scanning the data as the underlying data
changes. Since frequent scans are costly, these statistics are often stale and
lead to poor selectivity estimates. As an alternative to scans, query-driven
histograms have been proposed, which refine the histograms based on the actual
selectivities of the observed queries. Unfortunately, these approaches are
either too costly to use in practice---i.e., require an exponential number of
buckets---or quickly lose their advantage as they observe more queries.
In this paper, we propose a selectivity learning framework, called QuickSel,
which falls into the query-driven paradigm but does not use histograms.
Instead, it builds an internal model of the underlying data, which can be
refined significantly faster (e.g., only 1.9 milliseconds for 300 queries).
This fast refinement allows QuickSel to continuously learn from each query and
yield increasingly more accurate selectivity estimates over time. Unlike
query-driven histograms, QuickSel relies on a mixture model and a new
optimization algorithm for training its model. Our extensive experiments on two
real-world datasets confirm that, given the same target accuracy, QuickSel is
34.0x-179.4x faster than state-of-the-art query-driven histograms, including
ISOMER and STHoles. Further, given the same space budget, QuickSel is
26.8%-91.8% more accurate than periodically-updated histograms and samples,
respectively
Phylodynamics of Hepatitis C Virus Subtype 2c in the Province of Córdoba, Argentina
The Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 2 subtype 2c (HCV-2c) is detected as a low prevalence subtype in many countries, except in Southern Europe and Western Africa. The current epidemiology of HCV in Argentina, a low-prevalence country, shows the expected low prevalence for this subtype. However, this subtype is the most prevalent in the central province of Córdoba. Cruz del Eje (CdE), a small rural city of this province, shows a prevalence for HCV infections of 5%, being 90% of the samples classified as HCV-2c. In other locations of Córdoba Province (OLC) with lower prevalence for HCV, HCV-2c was recorded in about 50% of the samples. The phylogenetic analysis of samples from Córdoba Province consistently conformed a monophyletic group with HCV-2c sequences from all the countries where HCV-2c has been sequenced. The phylogeographic analysis showed an overall association between geographical traits and phylogeny, being these associations significant (α = 0.05) for Italy, France, Argentina (places other than Córdoba), Martinique, CdE and OLC. The coalescence analysis for samples from CdE, OLC and France yielded a Time for the Most Common Recent Ancestor of about 140 years, whereas its demographic reconstruction showed a “lag” phase in the viral population until 1880 and then an exponential growth until 1940. These results were also obtained when each geographical area was analyzed separately, suggesting that HCV-2c came into Córdoba province during the migration process, mainly from Europe, which is compatible with the history of Argentina of the early 20th century. This also suggests that the spread of HCV-2c occurred in Europe and South America almost simultaneously, possibly as a result of the advances in medicine technology of the first half of the 20th century

Increased hepatitis E virus seroprevalence correlates with lower CD4+ cell counts in HIV-infected persons in Argentina
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a single-stranded RNA virus that can cause hepatitis in an epidemic fashion. HEV usually causes asymptomatic or limited acute infections in immunocompetent individuals, whereas in immunosuppressed individuals such as transplant recipients, HEV can cause chronic infections. The risks and outcomes of HEV co-infection in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are poorly characterized. We used a third generation immunoassay to measure serum IgG antibodies specific for HEV in 204 HIV-infected individuals from Argentina and a control group of 433 HIV-negative individuals. We found 15 of 204 (7.3%, 95%CI 3.74-10.96%) individuals in the HIV-positive group to have positive HEV IgG levels suggestive of previous infection, compared to 19 of 433 (4.4%, 95% CI 2.5-6.3%) individuals in the HIV-negative control group (p = 0.12). Among HIV-positive individuals, those with HEV seropositivity had lower CD4 counts compared to those that were HEV seronegative (average CD4 count of 234 vs 422 mm3, p = 0.01), indicating that patients with lower CD4 counts were more likely to be HEV IgG positive. Moreover, HEV seropositivity in patients with CD4 counts 200 mm3 (p = 0.012). We found a positive PCR result for HEV in one individual. Our study found that increased seroprevalence of HEV IgG correlated with lower CD4 counts in HIV-infected patients in Argentina
