Background Radio Frequency Interference Measurements for Wireless Devices in the Electricity Supply Industry

    Get PDF
Incorporation of radio controller units into heavy equipment used in the electricity industry provides numerous advantages including: improved electrical isolation between plant and operator, ability to incorporate an additional remote operator, and reductions in vehicle wiring and hydraulic hoses for equipment control. However, secure operation of vehicles and plant incorporating radio control rely on establishing suitable levels of immunity to possible radio frequency interference. Interference levels in close proximity to high voltage power lines are of special concern to the electricity industry. This paper reports on a preliminary investigation into quantifying the levels of background radio interference at such locations in order to develop required immunity specifications for radio controlled equipment

Multi-Sensor Multi-Scan Radar Sensing of Multiple Extended Targets

We propose an efficient solution to the state estimation problem in multi-scan multi-sensor multiple extended target sensing scenarios. We first model the measurement process by a doubly inhomogeneous-generalized shot noise Cox process and then estimate the parameters using a jump Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling technique. The proposed approach scales linearly in the number of measurements and can take spatial properties of the sensors into account, herein, sensor noise covariance, detection probability, and resolution. Numerical experiments using radar measurement data suggest that the algorithm offers improvements in high clutter scenarios with closely spaced targets over state-of-the-art clustering techniques used in existing multiple extended target tracking algorithms

Prioritized Service of URLLC Traffic in Industrial Deployments of 5G NR Systems

The simultaneous support of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC) traffic types at the air interface in upcoming 5G New Radio systems is a challenging problem requiring new connection admission control and scheduling strategies. To enable this coexistence while still maintaining the prescribed quality-of-service guarantees the state of the art solutions utilize non-orthogonal multiple access and traffic isolation with explicit resource reservation. In this paper, we study an explicit prioritization of URLLC traffic over other services. Using the tools of queuing theory we mathematically characterize and investigate several techniques for priority-based resource allocation. Our results demonstrate that preemptive priority service is a viable option to fulfill strict delay and loss guarantees at the NR air interface. We also show that elasticity of lower priority eMBB service allows for additional capacity gains in terms of the eMBB session drop probability during the service.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe

Analysis of the seismic performance of a two storey log house

    Get PDF
The dearth of knowledge on the load resistance mechanisms of log houses and the need for developing numerical models that are capable of simulating the actual behaviour of these structures has pushed efforts to research the relatively unexplored aspects of log house construction. The aim of the research that is presented in this paper is to build a working model of a log house that will contribute toward understanding the behaviour of these structures under seismic loading. The paper presents the results of a series of shaking table tests conducted on a log house and goes on to develop a numerical model of the tested house. The finite element model has been created in SAP2000 and validated against the experimental results. The modelling assumptions and the difficulties involved in the process have been described and, finally, a discussion on the effects of the variation of different physical and material parameters on the results yielded by the model has been drawn up.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union‘s Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013] under grant agreement n°227887 (SERIES)

Towards access for all: 1st Working Group Report for the Global Gene Therapy Initiative (GGTI)

    Get PDF
The gene and cell therapy field saw its first approved treatments in Europe in 2012 and the United States in 2017 and is projected to be at least a $10B USD industry by 2025. Despite this success, a massive gap exists between the companies, clinics, and researchers developing these therapeutic approaches, and their availability to the patients who need them. The unacceptable reality is a geographic exclusion of low-and middle-income countries (LMIC) in gene therapy development and ultimately the provision of gene therapies to patients in LMIC. This is particularly relevant for gene therapies to treat human immunodeficiency virus infection and hemoglobinopathies, global health crises impacting tens of millions of people primarily located in LMIC. Bridging this divide will require research, clinical and regulatory infrastructural development, capacity-building, training, an approval pathway and community adoption for success and sustainable affordability. In 2020, the Global Gene Therapy Initiative was formed to tackle the barriers to LMIC inclusion in gene therapy development. This working group includes diverse stakeholders from all sectors and has set a goal of introducing two gene therapy Phase I clinical trials in two LMIC, Uganda and India, by 2024. Here we report on progress to date for this initiative

Crystal Phase Transitions in the Shell of PbS CdS Core Shell Nanocrystals Influences Photoluminescence Intensity

ABSTRACT We reveal the existence of two different crystalline phases, i.e., the metastable rock salt and the equilibrium zinc blende phase within the CdS shell of PbS CdS core shell nanocrystals formed by cationic exchange. The chemical composition profile of the core shell nanocrystals with different dimensions is determined by means of anomalous small angle X ray scattering with subnanometer resolution and is compared to X ray diffraction analysis. We demonstrate that the photoluminescence emission of PbS nanocrystals can be drastically enhanced by the formation of a CdS shell. Especially, the ratio of the two crystalline phases in the shell significantly influences the photoluminescence enhancement. The highest emission was achieved for chemically pure CdS shells below 1 nm thickness with a dominant metastable rock salt phase fraction matching the crystal structure of the PbS core. The metastable phase fraction decreases with increasing shell thickness and increasing Exchange times. The photoluminescence intensity depicts a constant decrease with decreasing metastable rock salt phase fraction but Shows an abrupt drop for shells above 1.3 nm thickness. We relate this effect to two different transition mechanisms for changing from the metastable rock salt phase to the equilibrium zinc blende phase depending on the shell thicknes

The authors presented the haematological blood parameters of Romanov breed sheep and their association with genotypes according to the β-lactoglobulin locus. Blood plays a significant role in the body as metabolism is carried out. It delivers nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body organs and removes metabolic waste products and carbon dioxide. The intensity of the metabolic processes can be judged from haematological data. Since blood enzymes, their activity, metabolic levels, and biochemical adaptation are encoded in their genes, the authors believe that the biochemical composition of blood in animals is, to a certain extent, related to their breeding and productive qualities. Identifying patterns of relationship and influence of genetic factors in breeds of different animals is one of the main tasks in the study of breeding features and further improvement and control of breed peculiarities of animals. For our analysis, 40 blood samples were taken from Romanov breed sheep for haematological tests, DNA extraction and PCR. DNA technology in conjunction with other factors should be used to improve the breeding process and the productive traits of the breeds. The haematological status of sheep has been examined on a PCE-90VET (HTI, USA) haematological analyser. The clinical and haematological parameters of Romanov breed sheep of different genotypes indicate high adaptation plasticity and a high level of metabolic processes occurring in the body of animals. The authors found that homozygous β-Lg A/A sheep had 1.5 times the number of leukocytes in the blood compared to heterozygous β-Lg A/B animals. Установлено, что у гомозиготных овец β-Lg A/A количество лейкоцитов в крови было в 1,5 раза выше, чем у гетерозиготных β-Lg A/В животных
