    Splitting times of doubly quantized vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates

    Recently, the splitting of a topologically created doubly quantized vortex into two singly quantized vortices was experimentally investigated in dilute atomic cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates [Y. Shin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160406 (2004)]. In particular, the dependency of the splitting time on the peak particle density was studied. We present results of theoretical simulations which closely mimic the experimental set-up. Contrary to previous theoretical studies, claiming that thermal excitations are the essential mechanism in initiating the splitting, we show that the combination of gravitational sag and time dependency of the trapping potential alone suffices to split the doubly quantized vortex in time scales which are in good agreement with the experiments. We also study the dynamics of the resulting singly quantized vortices which typically intertwine--especially, a peculiar vortex chain structure appears for certain parameter values.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Ground-State Dirac Monopole

    We show theoretically that a monopole defect, analogous to the Dirac magnetic monopole, may exist as the ground state of a dilute spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. The ground-state monopole is not attached to a single semi-infinite Dirac string, but forms a point where the circulation of a single vortex line is reversed. Furthermore, the three-dimensional dynamics of this monopole defect are studied after the magnetic field pinning the monopole is removed and the emergence of antimonopoles is observed.     Production of qqQQ final states in ee collisions in the left-right symmetric model

    We consider the reaction ee ->qqQQ as a test of lepton number non-conservation in the framework of the left-right-symmetric electroweak model. The main contributions to this process are due to Majorana neutrino exchange in t-channel and doubly charged Higgs (Delta{--}) exchange in s-channel with a pair of right-handed weak bosons (WR) as intermediate state. We show that in a linear ee collider with the collision energy of 1 TeV (1.5 TeV) the cross section of this process is 0.01 fb (1 fb), and it will, for the anticipated luminosity of 10**{35} cm**{-2}, be detectable below the WR threshold.     Anticoagulation Therapy After Biologic Aortic Valve Replacement

    Objectives: Thromboembolism prophylaxis after biologic aortic valve replacement (BAVR) is recommended for 3 months postoperatively. We examined the continuation of oral anticoagulation (OAC) treatment and its effect on the long-term prognosis after BAVR.Methods: We used nation-wide register data from 4,079 individuals who underwent BAVR. We examined the association between warfarin and the non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant use with death, stroke and major bleeding in 2010 – 2016.Results: The risk of stroke was higher (HR 2.39, 95% CI 1.62 – 3.53, p p = 0.016) in OAC-users compared to individuals without OAC. We observed no significant associations between OAC use and bleeding risk.Conclusion: OAC use after BAVR was associated with increased risk of stroke and decreased risk of death. These observational findings warrant validation in randomized controlled trials before any clinical conclusions can be drawn.</p

    Alcohol and fatal life trajectories in Russia: understanding narrative accounts of premature male death in the family

    Background: In the post-Soviet period, Russian working-age men have suffered unusually high mortality rates. Earlier quantitative work found that part of this is attributable to hazardous and harmful patterns of alcohol consumption, which increased in the period of transition at a time of massive social and economic disruption and uncertainty. However, there has been very little work done to document and understand in detail the downward life trajectories of individual men who died prematurely from alcohol-related conditions. Building on an earlier case-control study, this unique qualitative study investigates the perceived interplay between men's drinking careers, their employment and family history, health and eventual death.Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with close relatives (most often the widow) of 19 men who died between 2003 and 2005 aged 25-54 years whose close relatives reported that alcohol contributed to their death. The study was conducted in a typical medium-sized Russian city. The relative's accounts were analysed using thematic content analysis.Results: The accounts describe how hazardous drinking both contributed to serious employment, family and health problems, and was simultaneously used as a coping mechanism to deal with life crises and a decline in social status. The interviews highlighted the importance of the workplace and employment status for shaping men's drinking patterns. Common themes emerged around a culture of drinking in the workplace, peer pressure from colleagues to drink, use of alcohol as remuneration, consuming non-beverage alcohols,Russian-specific drinking patterns, attitudes to treatment, and passive attitudes towards health and drinking.Conclusions: The study provides a unique insight into the personal decline that lies behind the extremely high working-age mortality due to heavy drinking in Russia, and highlights how health status and hazardous drinking are often closely intertwined with economic and social functioning. Descriptions of the development of drinking careers, hazardous drinking patterns and treatment experiences can be used to plan effective interventions relevant in the Russian context

    Population trends in aortic valve surgery in Finland between 2001 and 2016

    Objectives. To investigate nationwide changes in procedure rates, patient selection, and prognosis after all surgical aortic valve replacements. Design. Patients undergoing primary surgical aortic valve replacement between 2001 and 2016 were identified from three nationwide registers with compulsory reporting to examine trends in aortic valve surgery over four four-year time periods. Results. A total of 12,139 surgical aortic valve replacement procedures (mean age 61.9 +/- 11.8 years, 39.1% women) were performed. The total number of biological valves increased from 1001 (42.9%) to 2526 (75.5%) from 2001-2004 to 2013-2016 (p Conclusions. The use of biologic aortic valve prosthesis has increased from 2001 to 2016. The proportion of women has declined markedly. The short-term mortality has decreased and the long-term mortality has stayed constant despite increasing comorbidity burden.</div

    Risk factors for major adverse cardiovascular events after the first acute coronary syndrome

    AimsTo evaluate risk factors for major adverse cardiac event (MACE) after the first acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and to examine the prevalence of risk factors in post-ACS patients.MethodsWe used Finnish population-based myocardial infarction register, FINAMI, data from years 1993-2011 to identify survivors of first ACS (n = 12686), who were then followed up for recurrent events and all-cause mortality for three years. Finnish FINRISK risk factor surveys were used to determine the prevalence of risk factors (smoking, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes and blood pressure) in post-ACS patients (n = 199).ResultsOf the first ACS survivors, 48.4% had MACE within three years of their primary event, 17.0% were fatal. Diabetes (p = 4.4 x 10(-7)), heart failure (HF) during the first ACS attack hospitalization (p = 6.8 x 10(-15)), higher Charlson index (p = 1.56 x 10(-19)) and older age (p = .026) were associated with elevated risk for MACE in the three-year follow-up, and revascularization (p = .0036) was associated with reduced risk. Risk factor analyses showed that 23% of ACS survivors continued smoking and cholesterol levels were still high (>5mmol/l) in 24% although 86% of the patients were taking lipid lowering medication.ConclusionDiabetes, higher Charlson index and HF are the most important risk factors of MACE after the first ACS.     Social factors influencing Russian male alcohol use over the life course: a qualitative study investigating age based social norms, masculinity, and workplace context

    The massive fluctuations occurring in Russian alcohol-related mortality since the mid-1980s cannot be seen outside of the context of great social and economic change. There is a dearth of qualitative studies about Russian male drinking and especially needed are those that address social processes and individual changes in drinking. Conducted as part of a longitudinal study on men’s alcohol consumption in Izhevsk, this qualitative study uses 25 semi-structured biographical interviews with men aged 33–60 years to explore life course variation in drinking. The dominant pattern was decreasing binge and frequent drinking as men reached middle age which was precipitated by family building, reductions in drinking with work colleagues, and health concerns. A minority of men described chaotic drinking histories with periods of abstinence and heavy drinking. The results highlight the importance of the blue-collar work environment for conditioning male heavy drinking in young adulthood through a variety of social, normative and structural mechanisms. Post-Soviet changes had a structural influence on the propensity for workplace drinking but the important social function of male drinking sessions remained. Bonding with workmates through heavy drinking was seen as an unavoidable and essential part of young men’s social life. With age peer pressure to drink decreased and the need to perform the role of responsible breadwinner put different behavioural demands on men. For some resisting social pressure to drink became an important site of self-determination and a mark of masculine maturity. Over the lifetime the place where masculine identity was asserted shifted from the workplace to the home, which commonly resulted in a reduction in drinking. We contribute to existing theories of Russian male drinking by showing that the performance of age-related social roles influences Russian men’s drinking patterns, drinking contexts and their attitudes.     Half-solitons in a polariton quantum fluid behave like magnetic monopoles

    Monopoles are magnetic charges, point-like sources of magnetic field. Contrary to electric charges they are absent in Maxwell's equations and have never been observed as fundamental particles. Quantum fluids such as spinor Bose-Einstein condensates have been predicted to show monopoles in the form of excitations combining phase and spin topologies. Thanks to its unique spin structure and the direct optical control of the fluid wavefunction, an ideal system to experimentally explore this phenomenon is a condensate of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. We use this system to create half-solitons, non-linear excitations with mixed spin-phase geometry. By tracking their trajectory, we demonstrate that half-solitons behave as monopoles, magnetic charges accelerated along an effective magnetic field present in the microcavity. The field-induced spatial separation of half-solitons of opposite charges opens the way to the generation of magnetic currents in a quantum fluid.Comment: 19 pages, includes Supplmentary Informatio

    The effect of bone marrow microenvironment on the functional properties of the therapeutic bone marrow-derived cells in patients with acute myocardial infarction

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Treatment of acute myocardial infarction with stem cell transplantation has achieved beneficial effects in many clinical trials. The bone marrow microenvironment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients has never been studied even though myocardial infarction is known to cause an imbalance in the acid-base status of these patients. The aim of this study was to assess if the blood gas levels in the bone marrow of STEMI patients affect the characteristics of the bone marrow cells (BMCs) and, furthermore, do they influence the change in cardiac function after autologous BMC transplantation. The arterial, venous and bone marrow blood gas concentrations were also compared.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Blood gas analysis of the bone marrow aspirate and peripheral blood was performed for 27 STEMI patients receiving autologous stem cell therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention. Cells from the bone marrow aspirate were further cultured and the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation rate was determined by MTT assay and the MSC osteogenic differentiation capacity by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay. All the patients underwent a 2D-echocardiography at baseline and 4 months after STEMI.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As expected, the levels of pO<sub>2</sub>, pCO<sub>2</sub>, base excess and HCO<sub>3 </sub>were similar in venous blood and bone marrow. Surprisingly, bone marrow showed significantly lower pH and Na<sup>+ </sup>and elevated K<sup>+ </sup>levels compared to arterial and venous blood. There was a positive correlation between the bone marrow pCO<sub>2 </sub>and HCO<sub>3 </sub>levels and MSC osteogenic differentiation capacity. In contrast, bone marrow pCO<sub>2 </sub>and HCO<sub>3 </sub>levels displayed a negative correlation with the proliferation rate of MSCs. Patients with the HCO<sub>3 </sub>level below the median value exhibited a more marked change in LVEF after BMC treatment than patients with HCO<sub>3 </sub>level above the median (11.13 ± 8.07% vs. 2.67 ± 11.89%, P = 0.014).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Low bone marrow pCO<sub>2 </sub>and HCO<sub>3 </sub>levels may represent the optimal environment for BMCs in terms of their efficacy in autologous stem cell therapy in STEMI patients.</p
