On The Origin Of The Gamma Rays From The Galactic Center
The region surrounding the center of the Milky Way is both astrophysically
rich and complex, and is predicted to contain very high densities of dark
matter. Utilizing three years of data from the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope
(and the recently available Pass 7 ultraclean event class), we study the
morphology and spectrum of the gamma ray emission from this region and find
evidence of a spatially extended component which peaks at energies between 300
MeV and 10 GeV. We compare our results to those reported by other groups and
find good agreement. The extended emission could potentially originate from
either the annihilations of dark matter particles in the inner galaxy, or from
the collisions of high energy protons that are accelerated by the Milky Way's
supermassive black hole with gas. If interpreted as dark matter annihilation
products, the emission spectrum favors dark matter particles with a mass in the
range of 7-12 GeV (if annihilating dominantly to leptons) or 25-45 GeV (if
annihilating dominantly to hadronic final states). The intensity of the
emission corresponds to a dark matter annihilation cross section consistent
with that required to generate the observed cosmological abundance in the early
universe (sigma v ~ 3 x 10^-26 cm^3/s). We also present conservative limits on
the dark matter annihilation cross section which are at least as stringent as
those derived from other observations.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figure
Thermolysis of imidates: A new method for the generation of carbonyl ylides
Thermolysis of dimethyl 2-[(3-oxo-3H-isoindol-1-yl)oxy]malonate (8) promotes a [1,4]-H shift in the imidic N¼C O CH fragment of the starting molecule, which leads to a reactive carbonyl ylide. This carbonyl ylide can be trapped by the C¼N bond of imidates and imines, as well as the C¼O bond of benzaldehyde. The corresponding cycloadducts 11, 14, and 16 are formed regioselectively in good yields (60 – 95%) and with high stereoselectivity. In the case of 11, the minor cycloadduct in solution undergoes an isomerization to give the more stable stereoisomer. The structures of two cycloadducts, i.e., 11a and 14a, have been established by X-ray crystallography
NGC 7331: the Galaxy with the Multicomponent Central Region
We present the results of the spectral investigation of the regular Sb galaxy
NGC 7331 with the Multi-Pupil Field Spectrograph of the 6m telescope. The
absorption-line indices H-beta, Mgb, and are mapped to analyse the
properties of the stellar populations in the circumnuclear region of the
galaxy. The central part of the disk inside ~3" (200 pc) -- or a separate
circumnuclear stellar-gaseous disk as it is distinguished by decoupled fast
rotation of the ionized gas -- is very metal-rich, rather young, ~ 2 billion
years old, and its solar magnesium-to-iron ratio evidences for a very long
duration of the last episode of star formation there. However the gas
excitation mechanism now in this disk is shock-like. The star-like nucleus had
probably experienced a secondary star formation burst too: its age is 5 billion
years, much younger than the age of the circumnuclear bulge. But [Mg/Fe]=+0.3
and only solar global metallicity imply that the nuclear star formation burst
has been much shorter than that in the circumnuclear disk. The surrounding
bulge is rather old, 9--14 billion years old, and moderately metal-poor. The
rotation of the stars and gas within the circumnuclear disk is axisymmetric
though its rotation plane may be slightly inclined to the global plane of the
galaxy. Outside the circumnuclear disk the gas may experience non-circular
motions, and we argue that the low-contrast extended bulge of NGC 7331 is
triaxial.Comment: LATEX, 27 pages, + 15 Postscript figures. Accepted to Astronomical

On a suggestion relating topological and quantum mechanical entanglements
We analyze a recent suggestion \cite{kauffman1,kauffman2} on a possible
relation between topological and quantum mechanical entanglements. We show that
a one to one correspondence does not exist, neither between topologically
linked diagrams and entangled states, nor between braid operators and quantum
entanglers. We also add a new dimension to the question of entangling
properties of unitary operators in general.Comment: RevTex, 7 eps figures, to be published in Phys. Lett. A (2004
All Inequalities for the Relative Entropy
The relative entropy of two n-party quantum states is an important quantity
exhibiting, for example, the extent to which the two states are different. The
relative entropy of the states formed by reducing two n-party to a smaller
number of parties is always less than or equal to the relative entropy of
the two original n-party states. This is the monotonicity of relative entropy.
Using techniques from convex geometry, we prove that monotonicity under
restrictions is the only general inequality satisfied by relative entropies. In
doing so we make a connection to secret sharing schemes with general access
structures.
A suprising outcome is that the structure of allowed relative entropy values
of subsets of multiparty states is much simpler than the structure of allowed
entropy values. And the structure of allowed relative entropy values (unlike
that of entropies) is the same for classical probability distributions and
quantum states.Comment: 15 pages, 3 embedded eps figure
On local invariants of pure three-qubit states
We study invariants of three-qubit states under local unitary
transformations, i.e. functions on the space of entanglement types, which is
known to have dimension 6. We show that there is no set of six independent
polynomial invariants of degree less than or equal to 6, and find such a set
with maximum degree 8. We describe an intrinsic definition of a canonical state
on each orbit, and discuss the (non-polynomial) invariants associated with it.Comment: LateX, 13 pages. Minor typoes corrected. Published versio
Bounds on relative entropy of entanglement for multi-party systems
We present upper and lower bounds to the relative entropy of entanglement of
multi-party systems in terms of the bi-partite entanglements of formation and
distillation and entropies of various subsystems. We point out implications of
our results to the local reversible convertibility of multi-party pure states
and discuss their physical basis in terms of deleting of information.Comment: 4 pages, no figure
Earth resources evaluation for New Mexico by LANDSAT-2
The author has identified the following significant results. The Middle Rio Grande project has not yet progressed to the point where mineral exploration sites can be chosen; however, there does appear to be some correlation between the known structure and mineral deposits and the LANDSAT lineament map. A circular feature identified in the southern Magdalena Mountains on LANDSAT-1 imagery agrees well with the location of a newly proposed caldron complex. Several recognized and unrecognized circular features were identified on imagery of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field. A check of aeromagnetic maps for New Mexico found that the circular features on the LANDSAT imagery showed up as areas of generally high magnetic intensity
Charge ordering in extended Hubbard models: Variational cluster approach
We present a generalization of the recently proposed variational cluster
perturbation theory to extended Hubbard models at half filling with repulsive
nearest neighbor interaction. The method takes into account short-range
correlations correctly by the exact diagonalisation of clusters of finite size,
whereas long-range order beyond the size of the clusters is treated on a
mean-field level. For one dimension, we show that quantum Monte Carlo and
density-matrix renormalization-group results can be reproduced with very good
accuracy. Moreover we apply the method to the two-dimensional extended Hubbard
model on a square lattice. In contrast to the one-dimensional case, a first
order phase transition between spin density wave phase and charge density wave
phase is found as function of the nearest-neighbor interaction at onsite
interactions U>=3t. The single-particle spectral function is calculated for
both the one-dimensional and the two-dimensional system.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure
